Luxury Cruise Line Rolls Out Updated Loyalty Programme (With Status Match)

Explora Journeys has just rolled out a very tempting updated loyalty programme, which could tempt other cruisers to consider switching allegiances.

Explora II Pool Deck

The luxury cruise line has launched phase two of its Explora Club loyalty programme, giving members new perks, the ability to track their points and tier levels online, and a broader Status Match offer that now includes Oceania Cruises.

The update comes at a time when Carnival Cruise Line’s Very Important Fun Person (VIFP) Club is under heavy fire.

In June 2025, the cruise giant announced that it would scrap lifetime loyalty status starting in 2026 and replace it with a two-year rolling window based on cruise nights and onboard spend.

Carnival loyalists quickly voiced their frustration, with many claiming they feel abandoned by a programme they spent years working toward. Some are now considering alternatives – and Explora is ready to welcome them.

However, Carnival is not one of the cruise lines where status match applies for Explora Journeys – although there is a way around that.

Perks Without the Pressure

Unlike Carnival’s new system, which will force guests to maintain activity to keep their status, Explora Club allows guests to retain their tier indefinitely once achieved. This alone may be enough to sway disillusioned cruisers looking for long-term recognition.

The Explora Club has five membership levels: Classic, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond. Members earn points based on cruise nights, onboard purchases, and select excursion bookings – and those points never expire.

Guests can now track their status in real time via the updated “My Explora Account” portal, a highly requested feature that makes it easier to manage and understand rewards at each level.

At the base Classic tier, travellers gain access to exclusive offers, priority booking windows, and a personalised member dashboard.

Silver members (1–5,000 points) unlock extras like birthday gifts and savings on future bookings.

Gold status (5,001–20,000 points) adds perks such as turndown surprises, while Platinum (20,001–50,000) includes bridge tours, laundry service, and Journey Experience Credits.

At the top, Diamond status (50,001+ points) offers serious incentives: complimentary week-long sailings for two, private suite upgrades, VIP transfers, and invitations to exclusive events like the President’s Journey and Chef’s Kitchen.

Points, Perks, and Status Matching

Explora’s loyalty programme awards 100 points per night at sea, with bonus multipliers depending on the suite booked – Ocean Suites earn 1x, Penthouses 2x, Residences 3x, and Owner’s Residences an impressive 10x multiplier.

The cruise line has also expanded its Status Match programme, allowing cruisers with loyalty levels from 11 participating cruise lines to match their status when joining Explora Club.

Brands included are:

  • MSC Cruises
  • Crystal Cruises
  • Ponant
  • Regent Seven Seas Cruises
  • Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection
  • Scenic Luxury Cruises
  • Seabourn
  • Silversea Cruises
  • SeaDream Yacht Club
  • Hapag-Lloyd Cruises
  • Now also: Oceania Cruises

Matched tiers apply immediately on a guest’s first sailing with Explora Journeys, making it easier than ever to enjoy elevated benefits without starting from scratch.

Carnival guests will note that they are unable to match directly with Explora Journeys, but if they are Platinum or Diamond level, they can join an MSC cruise first to take advantage of their own status match programme, and then they can match their new MSC status to Explora Journeys.

With so many passengers reconsidering their cruise line loyalty, Explora Journeys has timed this loyalty refresh perfectly. For guests unimpressed by Carnival’s upcoming changes, the journey to better perks may now be just one booking away.

I recommend booking with luxury specialists Panache Cruises for the best service.

Carnival To Pour Coca-Cola Again – Here’s Exactly What Will Be On The Menu

Carnival Cruise Line has confirmed that the soft-drink fountains on its North-American ships will soon sparkle with Coca-Cola once more.

Carnival Coca-Cola Coke Products

The line first moved to Pepsi in January 2020 but says it will “welcome back” Coke later this summer, making the world’s best-known cola its preferred partner for carbonated drinks, sparkling waters, zero-sugar and low-calorie options.

Carnival’s president, Christine Duffy, hailed the reunion of “two iconic brands that celebrate fun, family, friendship, food and fabulous memories,” adding that the new agreement will elevate the on-board dining and bar experience.

Dagmar Boggs, who heads foodservice for Coca-Cola in North America, returned the compliment, promising “the perfect drink for every moment of the journey – from an ice-cold Coca-Cola with lunch to a Topo Chico by the pool”.

Although a precise start-date is still “late summer”, the roll-out will vary by ship depending on existing Pepsi stock and delivery schedules.

Vessels based in the United States and Canada will change first, while Carnival’s European deployments and its Australian fleet will continue pouring their current sodas until they reposition.

The Definitive Carnival Coke List

Alongside classic red-can Coke, cruisers will soon see Coke Zero, Diet Coke and their caffeine-free counterparts.

Sprite and Sprite Zero, Fanta Orange and Barq’s root beer are also back; the latter pairs neatly with vanilla soft-serve from Swirls for impromptu floats.

Powerade returns in lemon-lime and fruit punch, plus zero-sugar fruit punch and Mountain Blast, all in 20-ounce bottles.

Sparkling-water fans will have Topo Chico in tangerine, lime and blackberry.

Those seeking protein can reach for 14-ounce bottles of Fairlife Core Power in chocolate or vanilla.

Club soda, tonic and ginger ale remain available through Coca-Cola’s distribution network.

An extra treat is reserved for Texan and Louisiana sailings: Dr Pepper will be stocked on ships out of Galveston and New Orleans, and Carnival’s brand ambassador John Heald hopes to extend it to other homeports.

Pepsi-Preferring Guests

Travellers loyal to the “other” brand need not despair.

Carnival’s beverage policy still allows each guest to bring an unopened 12-pack of cans on embarkation day, so Pepsi drinkers can pack their own.

Alternatively, they can purchase individual Pepsi products ashore and carry them back on board at ports of call.

A Carnival-Only Change – For Now

The new partnership covers only Carnival Cruise Line. Sister brands inside Carnival Corporation, such as Princess, Holland America, Cunard and P&O Cruises, will stick with their existing drink contracts unless they decide otherwise.

For now, though, Coke fans have cause to celebrate: before the end of the summer, the Fun Ships’ bars and buffets will once again serve that familiar red-label fizz, leaving passengers to decide whether it pairs better with a Guy’s burger, a BlueIguana taco or simply a sunny day at sea.

How To Rent A Yacht In Croatia Without Experience

No Captain? No Experience? No Problem! How to Rent a Yacht in Croatia Without Ever Holding a Helm

Dreaming of sailing along Croatia’s stunning Adriatic coast, hopping between island paradises like Hvar, Vis, or Korčula — but don’t know port from starboard? Good news: yacht chartering in Croatia isn’t just for salty sea dogs. Even if you’ve never held a helm or tied a knot, you can still have your yacht adventure.

Here’s how it works — and why even complete beginners can (and should!) set sail.

1. Yacht Rental Options for Beginners

Croatia is one of the world’s top sailing destinations, and its yacht charter industry is tailor-made for every level of experience — including absolute zero.

You’ve got three main options:

Charter with a Skipper (Captain)

This is the most popular choice for beginners. A professional skipper handles the sailing, docking, and navigation. You just sit back, relax, and focus on important tasks — like deciding between rosé or rakija.

  • Ideal for: First-timers, families, groups who want a stress-free trip.
  • Cost: Skipper fees typically range from €150–€200 per day, plus meals and tips.
  • Bonus: Skippers often act as local guides, showing you hidden bays and restaurants only locals know.

Crewed Yacht Charter

Take it a notch higher with a full crew — usually a skipper, a hostess/cook, and sometimes even more. They’ll take care of everything from sailing to meals and tidying up.

  • Ideal for: Luxury seekers or those celebrating special occasions.
  • Cost: More than bareboat or skippered charters, but pure indulgence.
  • Vibe: Think floating boutique hotel.

Cabin Charter

Want the yacht life without renting the whole boat? Cabin charters let you book just a cabin on a shared yacht, often with a fixed itinerary and crew.

  • Ideal for: Solo travelers, couples, or budget-conscious adventurers.
  • No planning required: Just pack your swimsuit and sunscreen.

2. What Documents Do You Need?

If you’re chartering with a skipper or crew, the paperwork is minimal:

  • Valid ID or Passport
  • Contract from the charter company
  • Travel insurance (recommended, not always required)

If you’re going bareboat (without a skipper), you’ll need:

  • Valid sailing license recognized by Croatian authorities
  • VHF radio license

But let’s be real — if you’re reading this blog, chances are you’re not going bareboat. So forget the licenses and leave the sailing to the pros.

3. Is It Really for Beginners?

Absolutely. Chartering a yacht in Croatia as a newbie is easier than renting a scooter in Rome. You don’t need to know how to hoist a sail or read nautical charts. The yacht, crew, and route are all handled for you.

Thousands of tourists do it every year — from honeymooners to retirees to adventurous groups of friends. Many fall so in love with the sailing lifestyle that they come back year after year… and some even get their own license!

Ready to Set Sail?

If you’re curious about available options, check out what’s on offer in Croatia yacht charters — from sleek catamarans to luxurious crewed yachts.

Whether you want to swim in secret coves, sip wine under the stars, or just unplug from the world, there’s a yacht in Croatia with your name on it.

And remember: you don’t need to be a captain to live like one.

Authorities Reveal How Disney Cruise Line Passenger, Aged 5, Fell From The Ship

Officials have helped put rumours to rest and have disclosed how a young Disney Cruise Line passenger, aged 5, plunged off the vessel after her courageous father saved her in the open sea and have addressed the circulating rumors directly.

The young girl, was aboard the Disney Dream in international waters, when she slipped through the ship’s porthole and into the ocean below. This clarification was provided by authorities, disputing claims that her father was to blame for the frightening drop.

While her parents enjoyed a game of shuffleboard nearby around 11:30 a.m. on June 29, the little girl was sitting on a railing on the fourth-floor deck of the ship. Suddenly, she toppled backward, through the porthole and into the open sea, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office communicated on Wednesday, as reported by CBS Miami.

The girl’s 37-year-old father did not witness the fall but was alerted by her mother. He plunged into the water and retrieved his daughter, and they both stayed afloat for about 20 minutes until the ship’s rescue teams arrived.

Authorities released preliminary details to counter online rumors suggesting that the heroic father was holding her over the railing during the incident or the family was taking a photo together. Security footage from the ship and crew members who witnessed the fall supported the family’s account of the terrifying event.

Family Blessed

“This family is so blessed,” the sheriff’s office said. “It’s great to be able to respond to good news rather than what could have been a tragic outcome.”

The ship was navigating between the Bahamas and Fort Lauderdale when the captain announced “Mr. Mop Portside,” a call to the crew indicating a possible man overboard on the left side of the vessel.

The fourth deck, where the girl and her family were situated when she fell, is less populated compared to the other decks and features shuffleboard courts, according to one passenger’s comment to CBS Miami.

A safety barrier is in place on the deck, although there are “small indentations and gaps that could allow someone to climb,” remarked passenger Monica Shannon to the local news outlet.

It remains unclear why the porthole was open or how the young girl managed to slip through it.

Authorities praised the quick response of the rescue crew for saving both individuals.

“Based on the reports I have read, the Disney crew was well-prepared. Their training and readiness clearly paid off, as they successfully executed an ocean rescue,” stated the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.

“The Crew aboard the Disney Dream rapidly rescued two guests from the water. We congratulate our Crew Members for their remarkable skills and swift actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes. We are dedicated to the safety and welfare of our guests, and this incident underscores the effectiveness of our safety protocols,” Disney communicated in a statement.

Both the father and daughter received treatment on the ship before being transported to a local hospital upon returning to port. The father was eventually hospitalized, though officials did not disclose the nature of the injuries he sustained during his heroic rescue.

Backlash Over Ridiculous Rental Prices Causes Carnival Backtrack

Just days after cruise fans erupted in disbelief over the cost of a basic pool noodle rental at Celebration Key, Carnival Cruise Line has quietly reduced the price by 45%.

Carnival Pool Noodles

The news comes after Carnival revealed the prices for activities at the brand-new Celebration Key private resort. While most were relatively uncontroversial, the pool noodle rental caused huge uproar, which seems to have caused a change of plan from Carnival.

Now, instead of the original $19.99 (USD) daily fee, guests can rent a single foam noodle for $10.99 while enjoying the new Bahamian beach destination.

The listing – still described by the cruise line as “the ideal way to float your worries away while soaking up the sun” – has still generated plenty of scepticism, even at the new lower rate.

The noodle rental page now carries a single review, a one-star comment from user dragonflyblue, who wrote: “They’ve lost their minds. These are $1 pool toys for rent for a day for $20??”

The reviewer did note the noodle’s “reliability” and “fun” with four stars in each category, but slammed the value.

Still Not a Bargain?

Even after the discount, many guests remain unconvinced. Pool noodles can be found for a fraction of the price at US retailers such as Walmart and Target, often priced between $1 and $5 depending on size and quality.

Discount chains like Dollar Tree regularly stock them for as little as $1.25, and Amazon offers multipacks that can reduce the per-noodle cost to under $2.

Some cruisers have joked online about packing their own noodles or even reselling them at a discount to fellow travellers.

Policy Could Change

Interestingly, Carnival does not currently list pool noodles as prohibited items.

While the cruise line does restrict guests from bringing rafts, inflatable pools, and other floatation devices for onboard pool use, items like noodles are still permitted for use during shore days – such as at Celebration Key.

That may not always be the case. Carnival has recently updated its prohibited items policy in response to unexpected guest behaviour – such as banning foldable “clack” fans from certain crowded events due to safety concerns.

Other recent changes include banning pineapple door décor, paper fans and Bluetooth speakers.

It’s not unimaginable that pool noodles could one day be added to the list if they’re misused or become a safety issue.

After all, most kids – and a fair few adults – know that a noodle can just as easily become a soft baton during water fights as it can a relaxing float.

Carnival’s current policy bans all weapons or items that could be “adapted” for use as one – a broad description that could theoretically include an overenthusiastically swung pool toy.

For now, however, bringing your own noodle to use at Celebration Key remains both allowed and arguably the more budget-friendly option – especially for families or anyone not eager to spend $10.99 for a piece of foam they don’t get to keep.

Urgent Search For Missing Cruise Guest

Authorities in Juneau, Alaska, have launched a large-scale search for a missing cruise guest after 62-year-old Marites Buenafe failed to return to Norwegian Bliss on Tuesday 1st July 2025.

Juneau in Alaska

Buenafe, a resident of Kentucky, was last seen disembarking the ship in the morning with plans to ride the local tram up Mount Roberts and continue hiking on foot.

She was travelling alone at the time, according to statements from her family.

Concern was raised around 2:50 pm local time when her relatives contacted the Juneau Police Department after realising she hadn’t returned before the ship’s 1:30 pm departure.

This prompted an immediate response from multiple emergency teams.

The operation is being led by Alaska State Troopers, with support from Juneau Mountain Rescue, Southeast Alaska Dogs for Organized Ground Search, and the Juneau Police Department.

Crews are using helicopters, drones equipped with thermal imaging, and ground teams to comb the mountainous terrain – continuing well into the night.

Norwegian Cruise Line confirmed the situation, saying: “An active search is ongoing, and we are providing assistance to local authorities as appropriate. Our CARE team is providing support to the guest’s family and our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.”

Norwegian Bliss Continues Voyage

The 168,028-gross-ton Norwegian Bliss is currently sailing a 7-night round-trip itinerary from Seattle that began on 28th June 2025.

Juneau was the ship’s second port of call, following Sitka. Despite the ongoing search, the cruise is continuing its schedule with planned stops at Icy Strait Point, Ketchikan, and Victoria, British Columbia, before returning to Seattle on 5th July.

Buenafe was only four days into the voyage when she disappeared. As of now, no additional guests have been reported missing and the onboard experience is continuing as planned for other passengers.

Authorities believe she likely set off on the Mount Roberts Trail, a notoriously steep and rugged route known for uneven paths, mud, and quickly changing weather – all of which are complicating the search.

With ongoing rain and limited visibility, the urgency to find the hiker grows by the hour.

Rare but Not Unprecedented

Cruise passenger disappearances are rare, especially in port.

Buenafe’s case marks just the second instance of a cruise guest going missing in 2025. Earlier this year in February, Tynisha Williams disappeared after leaving Radiance of the Seas while it was docked in Cozumel, Mexico.

In 2024, several other cases made headlines, including a 66-year-old guest with dementia missing from Icon of the Seas in Cozumel, and a 14-year-old boy who vanished while sailing aboard Caribbean Princess in northern Germany.

Fortunately, most missing persons cases end with the guest found safe – and hopes remain high for a similar outcome here.

Authorities continue to monitor the search zone closely, and Norwegian Cruise Line has reiterated its commitment to assisting in any way it can.

Disney Dream Dad Did NOT Put Daughter on Railing for Photo, Sheriff Confirms

In a story that almost broke the internet over the weekend, rumors quickly spread like wildfire. The dramatic events of a father jumping off a cruise ship to save his daughter that had just fallen into the water prompted all kinds of comments from the cruise community.

After all, this story was unique in so many ways and pulled at the heart strings of any parent.

But one major claim about the story, widely circulated on social media, has been officially debunked by authorities.

Disney Dream cruise ship sailing out of port

Initial reports came from other passengers on the ship and eyewitness accounts from crew members.

Social media rumors added even more confusion, incorrectly claiming that a father placed his 5-year-old daughter on the ship’s railing for a family picture before she fell overboard on Disney Dream.

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office has now confirmed that their investigation, including a review of ship security video, shows the girl was not put on the railing by her father for a picture.

What Really Happened

Instead, the Sheriff’s Office stated that the young girl lost her balance while sitting on a railing and fell backward through a porthole.

This new information changes the narrative entirely, moving it from potential negligence to a parent’s immediate and heroic response in what must have been a terrifying moment.

The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 29, 2025, on Deck 4 of the Disney Dream, while the ship was in international waters between The Bahamas and Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale.

One passenger reported speaking with a crew member who witnessed the event and indicated the girl was climbing near the railing while her parents were nearby, possibly playing shuffleboard.

While the Sheriff’s Office has not shed further light on the exact design of the railing that allowed access, their investigation confirmed the girl’s fall. Security footage from the ship corroborated the statements from the family and cruise ship staff.

A Father’s Heroic Act

The dramatic events began when the young girl went overboard, falling an estimated 45 feet. Her mother immediately alerted her husband, the 37-year-old father, who had not seen the incident unfold. Without hesitation, he jumped into the ocean after his daughter.

Reports indicate he spent approximately 20 minutes treading water, working tirelessly to keep his daughter’s head above water until rescue teams could reach them.

“After the girl’s mother alerted her husband, who didn’t see the incident, he jumped into the ocean to save his daughter. BSO detectives said after the 37-year-old father found his daughter, he treaded water until they were rescued by a tender that was launched from the ship,” the Sheriff’s office wrote in a statement.

Successful Rescue

Both father and daughter were rescued by the quick-acting Disney Dream crew, who launched a rescue boat and deployed life preservers.

The father was later transported to a hospital for an unspecified injury following the ordeal. The successful rescue of both passengers is a rare and remarkable outcome in overboard incidents.

A Disney Cruise Line spokesperson stated, “The Crew aboard the Disney Dream swiftly rescued two guests from the water. We commend our Crew Members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes. We are committed to the safety and well-being of our guests, and this incident highlights the effectiveness of our safety protocols.”

A TikTok video showed the girl wrapped in a towel and being held by a rescuer while the father was seen completely out of breath due to the ordeal.

Rumors Spread Fast

This story really highlights how in an age of rapid information, sometimes that information isn’t as reliable as we would hope. Initial, false reports caused a lot of public confusion and unfairly cast the father in a negative light.

Rumors can spread quickly, and unfortunately, they often spread faster when they paint someone in a more negative light.

For the family’s continued privacy, authorities are not releasing their names or further details of the father’s injury.

Smart Upgrade Or Waste Of Money? (2024)

Booking an MSC cruise? Unless you’re splashing out for Yacht Club, you’ll have to pick from three packages – Bella, Fantastica, or Aurea – and your choice isn’t just a label. It affects your cabin, dining, perks, and even where you relax onboard.

MSC Aurea Bar

Aurea is the most premium of the three… and the most expensive. But is it really worth the upgrade?

Here’s what you actually get – and whether the Aurea experience lives up to the hype.

Aurea Experience

The Aurea experience is one of several cruise packages guests can choose from when they book their MSC cruise. Of the three options (excluding Yacht Club, which is separate), it is the best option, giving guests the best choice of accommodation and various other perks.

There are a lot of reasons to choose Aurea as your cruise package, but you have to bear in mind that it does cost to upgrade – this isn’t something you’re getting for free.

So, you need to look at the various benefits you get with Aurea, and then decide whether it’s worth it or if you’d rather save money and book Bella or Fantastica.

It’s worth noting that Aurea is only available when you book a Balcony cabin or a Suite. You can’t book the Aurea experience with an Inside or Ocean View cabin.

MSC Aurea suite

Everything Included When You Book Aurea

The Aurea experience includes everything that the Bella and Fantastica packages include, but with better options for your cabin and dining times. It also has a host of extra perks too.

Here’s everything you get with Bella and Fantastica, which you also get with Aurea:

  • Your accommodation, meals in the main dining room and buffet, and live entertainment
  • The option to book a discounted drinks package when you book your cruise
  • Access to the swimming pools, sports facilities and gym
  • Kids clubs
  • Earn loyalty points for the MSC Voyagers Club every time you cruise
  • The chance to choose your own cabin and location on the ship
  • One free change to your cruise (cabin or cruise date)
  • Breakfast served in your cabin with free delivery
  • 20% discount on a speciality restaurant pre-paid package

And then here are all the MSC Aurea benefits exclusive to this tier:

  • Pick from the best Balcony cabins and Suites in the most desired locations on the ship
  • 24-hour room service – items are charged for, but delivery is free
  • My Time Dining – enjoy your dinner whenever you want it
  • Free access to the exclusive Solarium deck area
  • Access to the Thermal Spa area (reservations needed)
  • Bathrobes, slippers and a pillow menu for your room
  • 40% discount on a dedicated pre-paid spa package
  • 10% discount on all spa treatments purchased on-board
  • Priority boarding and luggage drop off
  • A welcome package in your cabin or suite, including Prosecco and chocolates
  • A Balinese massage pre-cruise, available up to 2 days before you sail

Read more: What’s Included in MSC Cruises (And How Much is Everything Else?)

You Don’t Get A Drinks Package Included Anymore

The Aurea experience on MSC Cruises does not include a drinks package. It used to include the Easy drink package, which allowed guests to enjoy a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. This benefit was removed from the Aurea experience in 2022.

Now, the only free drinks that guests get with the Aurea experience are the welcome Prosecco in their cabin and suite on arrival. Guests will need to pay for their own MSC drinks package if they want one.

Nor Do You Get WiFi…

The MSC Aurea package does not include free WiFi. The only tier that includes free internet access is the MSC Yacht Club – all other guests will need to pay for their internet package if they want to get online.

Fantastic Vs Aurea

MSC Fantastica is the mid-range experience on MSC Cruises – it doesn’t give you all the spa-related perks, and it doesn’t let you dine whenever you want to. It gives you some choice of cabin and dining time – more so than the Bella experience – but nowhere near as much flexibility as Aurea.

It’s Not A Fixed Cost

The cost of Aurea is not fixed – it depends on the cruise that you book, including the ship and the date. The price is flexible and what you pay on one cruise might be different from what you pay on another.

As a guideline, expect Aurea to cost somewhere in the region of £100 ($120) to £500 ($600) more than a Bella experience, and around £50 ($60) to £250 ($300) more than a Fantastica experience.

There may be some occasions where you try to book a cruise and Bella isn’t available. In that case, you’ll be told the Fantastica upgrade costs nothing, and the Aurea upgrade will only tell you the price difference between Fantastica and Aurea.

And on other times, you might find that Aurea is the only available option, and it costs nothing to choose it.

Don’t be fooled into thinking these are free upgrades. They aren’t. What this means is that the Bella and/or Fantastica experiences have sold out, and that Aurea is the only option left.

And the price you’ve been shown when booking your cruise already includes the upgrade fee for Aurea. You aren’t getting it for free, but it’s already been added into the fare you’ve been shown.

So just because it says “+£0” for Aurea, you are still paying for it.

Final Word

There’s no simple answer when it comes to deciding whether Aurea is worth it for your MSC cruise. It depends on a number of factors:

  • How much the upgrade costs
  • Where you prefer to eat during your cruise
  • How much you care about your cabin
  • Whether you’ll make use of all the perks

If you were looking for a cheap MSC cruise, then it’s not likely to be worth it. You’ll probably want an Inside or Ocean View cabin instead, which you can’t get with Aurea.

But if you want a Balcony cabin or a Suite, then definitely look at the Aurea prices. While you can book your own cabin of choice with Fantastica, you won’t have access to all the best locations on the ship.

The free delivery for room service is a nice perk if you’re planning on eating in your cabin or suite a lot, but it is only the delivery that’s free – you still need to pay for what you’re ordering. The spa access is probably a better benefit, but again, only for those who plan to use it.

Really, the main perks to focus on are the My Choice Dining and the ability to select your cabin location from all of the best spots. Cabin location can make a real difference in terms of the views you enjoy and your distance from facilities.

MSC Aurea Suite

And having the flexibility to eat dinner in the main dining rooms at a time that suits you, rather than one which is dictated to you, is something a lot of passengers prefer. You can plan your evening to suit you, rather than planning around when you have to eat.

In summary, you need to think about how much the Aurea upgrade costs against how much you’d make use of what it gets you. If it sounds like it’ll really improve your cruise, then go for it. Otherwise, maybe save money and choose Fantastica or even Bella.

Your Guide To Alcohol-Free Cruising (2024)

Think cruising is all about cocktails and bottomless booze? Think again.
Whether you’re sober-curious, in recovery, or just don’t drink, you can still have an amazing time at sea, without a single sip.

As someone who’s cruised alcohol-free while pregnant and with a husband who doesn’t drink, I’ve got plenty of tips to help you stay strong and still enjoy every minute of your holiday.

Here’s how to cruise sober without missing out on the fun.

Father and daughter enjoying their drinks together

Sober Cruises

Sober cruises do exist, although they don’t typically have entire cruises where no alcohol is served. Instead, they are itineraries planned where groups of sober passengers can travel together and support each other, avoiding the alcohol sold on board.

As well as specially organised sober cruises, there are regular cruises where you may be able to attend AA meetings, sometimes referred to as “Friends of Bill W” meetings or FOB meetings. Anyone looking to stay sober on a cruise can use these groups as a support network.

If you want to stay sober on a cruise and you’re worried about the temptation of alcohol, it’s best to book through a dedicated travel agent that organises these cruises.

That way, you’ll either be able to travel with a larger group of sober passengers, meaning you know there won’t be as much of a ‘drinking party’ atmosphere on the ship. And you can get tailored support to ensure you have plenty of sober activities to look forward to.

If that’s not an option – the dates don’t work for you, or your preferred cruise is sold out already – then you can look at a regular cruise and use forums and social media to find sober groups who will be travelling.

While you might have the option to drink alcohol on those cruises, you can help to remove that temptation by connecting with a support group.

What To Expect On A Sober Cruise

If you’re someone who doesn’t drink, that certainly does not stop you from enjoying an amazing cruise holiday, especially if you choose a sober cruise.

I won’t lie, there are bars everywhere on a cruise ship, and there are often special offers on cocktails of the day posted on your daily updates. So, if you’re someone trying to enjoy a sober cruise but you don’t travel on an organised event or with a support group, it can be a challenge.

And yet, there is so much to do on a cruise ship that isn’t alcohol themed that you can definitely keep yourself entertained without a drink.

Cruise ships are becoming more and more packed with things to do on board. It’s not like classical ships where sunbathing with a cocktail was all you had to do between meals on a sea day.

Instead, here’s a snapshot of just SOME of the activities you could enjoy on a cruise that don’t involve alcohol:

  • Riding waterslides
  • Playing mini-golf
  • Rock-climbing walls
  • Riding go-karts
  • A roller-coaster around the ship
  • Escape rooms
  • Interactive, Augmented Reality (AR) activities
  • Movies on a big screen on the open deck
  • Live theatre shows
  • Skydiving simulators
  • Spa treatments, wellness activities and gym workouts

In fact, for many of these activities, you have to be alcohol-free to take part. Cruise lines will turn away anyone who’s intoxicated.  I was actually turned away from the high ropes course on Arvia because I had drunk half a pint of lager.

The very latest ships are full-on floating entertainment resorts and you can find enough to keep you busy, without drinking alcohol, even if you didn’t step ashore for the entire time.

But when you do head into your ports of call to explore, you’ll find even more to do, including sightseeing tours around Mediterranean cities, exciting water sports in the Caribbean, hikes around some incredible natural scenery in Northern Europe or Alaska, and so on.

Despite the fact that cruise ships do have a bit of an alcohol culture to them on regular sailings, cruises are still some of the best options for a sober holiday because you have more entertainment options on hand, and your scenery (and choice of activities) changes with each new port you visit.

Finally, cruises do host meetings to help anyone who wants to stay sober on a cruise. They’re just a little more subtle about it – look out for those “Friends of Bill W” meetings.

Non-Alcoholic Beverages Aplenty

Teetotalers are spoilt for choice when it comes to non-alcoholic drinks. Gone are the days when you’d feel lucky to get your hands on a Becks Blue!

Nowadays, most cruise ship bars have a choice of at least three mocktails on the menu as well as several different bottles of zero-proof beers. Many also have alcohol-free wine, cider and gin on the menu.

And just because you don’t drink alcohol, it doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy a drink package. Most cruise lines also offer non-alcoholic drinks packages so you can fill up on mocktails, smoothies, fruit juices, soft drinks, teas, coffees and bottled water.

Where To Find Sober Cruises

You can find sober cruises online – there are a number of organisations that arrange sailings. Here are some of the more popular providers of sober cruise itineraries, including some sober cruise 2025 options:

Sober Celebrations

Sober Celebrations is a US-based travel company specialising in organising group trips for sober vacationers. They offer regular cruise holidays, including an annual cruise break around Halloween.

For 2025, Sober Celebrations has arranged cruises with Royal Caribbean to Alaska and the Caribbean.

One Day At A Time Cruises

One Day At A Time Cruises is run by two American travel agents who want to help guests find a great cruise where they can be sober.

Travel Sober

Travel Sober organises multiple sober cruise holidays every year across a variety of destinations. They are aimed at people who just want to relax without alcohol, or those who are on a more intensive sober recovery journey.

Sober Vacations

Sober Vacations is an organisation that doesn’t exclusively deal with cruises, but they do offer some of the more exotic itineraries for sober guests, where you can thrill in the destination, ideal for distracting yourself from any boozy atmosphere onboard.

Upcoming trips in 2025 include a trip to Alaska onboard Celebrity Solstice and a French river cruise onboard AMAKristina.

The Bottom Line

While it is true that alcohol is freely available on cruise holidays, that doesn’t rule out this type of getaway if you are someone who is recovering from alcohol addiction, or you are just someone who isn’t fond of drinking and wants to enjoy a relaxed atmosphere.

It’s best to book a cruise with a sober cruise group, but if you can’t, the best advice I have is to avoid cruise lines with more of a party atmosphere – Carnival and Virgin Voyages being two of the most prominent for that sort of lifestyle. There are no alcohol free cruise ships, but some are definitely more suited to an alcohol free cruise.

And make sure you check forums and social media groups to find other sober passengers on your sailing, so you can find support if you need it.
