Port Canaveral Launches $95 Million Terminal 10 Transformation

Port Canaveral has commenced a $95 million expansion and renovation of Cruise Terminal 10, with completion targeted for November 2027.

The ambitious project will increase the facility’s footprint by nearly 30 per cent whilst modernising security screening areas, updating interiors and equipment, and preparing the terminal to accommodate some of the world’s largest cruise ships.

Multiple Cruise Lines Set To Benefit From Enhanced Facility

The renovation project affects one of Port Canaveral’s most versatile cruise terminals, with Disney Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, and Royal Caribbean among the operators currently utilising the facility.

Construction has already begun on the comprehensive updates, which will transform the terminal into a more spacious, efficient, and visually striking gateway for cruise passengers.

The facility serves ships from multiple cruise lines on a rotating basis, providing flexibility for Port Canaveral to accommodate various vessels and itineraries throughout the year.

This shared-use model has become increasingly important as cruise demand has grown in recent years, with Port Canaveral cementing its position as one of the busiest cruise ports in the world.

In the coming weeks alone, vessels from Disney, MSC, and Royal Caribbean are all scheduled to dock at Terminal 10, demonstrating the facility’s importance to the port’s overall cruise operations.

The renovation aims to enhance the experience for passengers from all these cruise lines and more.

Expanded Footprint Will Exceed 145,000 Square Feet

Expanded Footprint Will Exceed 145,000 Square Feet

When construction concludes, the renovated terminal will encompass more than 145,000 square feet – representing a nearly 30 per cent increase over the existing facility.

This substantial expansion will enable the terminal to handle some of the largest cruise ships currently sailing, including the mega-ships that have become increasingly popular with cruise lines in recent years.

The additional square footage will address one of the most common pain points for cruise passengers: crowding during embarkation and debarkation.

By creating more space for security screening, luggage handling, and passenger processing, Port Canaveral aims to reduce bottlenecks and improve the flow of guests through the terminal.

The enlarged facility will also provide cruise lines with greater flexibility in scheduling and operations, potentially allowing for more efficient turnarounds between sailings.

This operational efficiency benefits not only the cruise lines themselves but also the thousands of passengers who pass through the terminal each week during peak cruise season.

Enhanced Security And Processing Areas Address Passenger Flow

Enhanced Security And Processing Areas Address Passenger Flow

Among the most significant practical improvements are expanded security screening and luggage handling areas designed to accelerate processing and reduce congestion.

These updates directly address feedback from cruise passengers and cruise lines about the challenges of moving thousands of guests through terminals in compressed timeframes.

The renovation will incorporate modern security technology and expanded checkpoint areas, allowing for multiple screening lanes to operate simultaneously.

This approach has proven effective at other major cruise terminals and airports, significantly reducing wait times during peak embarkation periods.

Luggage handling areas will also receive substantial upgrades, with expanded space for bag drop-off and improved systems for tracking and loading passenger belongings.

These improvements should result in faster processing times and fewer instances of delayed or mishandled luggage, concerns that consistently rank among passengers’ top priorities when evaluating their cruise experience.

Modern Design Features Glass Facade And Natural Lighting

Rendered videos and images released by Port Canaveral showcase a striking modern design featuring a glass facade that will flood the terminal with natural light.

The architectural plans reveal arched glass ceilings, contemporary blue and brown colour schemes, and abundant comfortable seating throughout the spacious interior.

The design emphasises both aesthetics and functionality, with very visible signage to guide passengers, dedicated bus lanes and drop-off zones to reduce congestion, and covered walkways to protect guests from Florida’s unpredictable weather.

Check-in kiosks will streamline the embarkation process, reducing queues and allowing passengers to proceed more quickly to security screening.

Captain John W. Murray, Port Canaveral’s CEO, emphasised the dual focus on form and function.

“We’ve taken everything we’ve learned about cruise operations to create a terminal that is highly functional and visually beautiful,” he stated.

“Our cruise business investments are highly focused on ensuring that guest arrivals and departures are comfortable, efficient, and above all, support the high quality experience we provide for our cruise partners and their guests.”

The attention to visual appeal reflects Port Canaveral’s recognition that the terminal experience sets the tone for passengers’ entire cruise vacation.

First impressions matter, and the port aims to create a welcoming, memorable environment that builds excitement for the journey ahead.

Infrastructure Upgrades Include Climate Control And Accessibility

Beyond the visible design elements, the renovation encompasses substantial infrastructure improvements that will enhance comfort and accessibility.

New elevators and escalators will improve vertical circulation throughout the multi-level terminal, particularly important for passengers with mobility challenges or those travelling with young children.

Updated heating and air conditioning systems will provide more efficient climate control – a crucial consideration in Florida’s hot and humid climate, where passengers often queue both indoors and outdoors during embarkation and debarkation.

The improved HVAC systems will not only increase passenger comfort but also reduce energy consumption, aligning with broader sustainability goals.

Enhanced signage throughout the terminal will provide clearer wayfinding for passengers, many of whom may be first-time cruisers unfamiliar with cruise terminal procedures.

Digital displays will offer real-time information about boarding status, security wait times, and other relevant updates to keep passengers informed throughout the embarkation process.

These behind-the-scenes improvements may be less visually dramatic than the glass facade and modern interiors, but they play an essential role in creating a smooth, stress-free terminal experience for cruise passengers and their families.

Part Of Port Canaveral’s Nearly $1 Billion Investment Programme

The Terminal 10 renovation represents just one component of Port Canaveral Advantage, an ambitious nearly $1 billion capital improvement programme encompassing facility upgrades, technology enhancements, and other projects across all aspects of the port’s maritime operations.

This comprehensive investment strategy demonstrates Port Canaveral’s commitment to maintaining its competitive position in the increasingly competitive cruise industry.

Cruise Hive has previously reported on another significant project within this programme: Cruise Terminal 5 is also undergoing reimagining and expansion, with additional parking being added to accommodate growing cruise passenger volumes.

These parallel projects reflect the port’s recognition that multiple terminals require modernisation to meet current and future demand.

The scale of investment underscores Port Canaveral’s importance to Florida’s economy and the broader cruise industry.

As one of the world’s busiest cruise ports, Port Canaveral generates substantial economic activity through direct cruise operations, passenger spending, and related tourism.

Maintaining state-of-the-art facilities is essential to attracting cruise lines and the millions of passengers they bring each year.

The port’s willingness to invest heavily in infrastructure also signals confidence in the cruise industry’s continued growth, despite recent challenges.

By building capacity now, Port Canaveral positions itself to accommodate the next generation of even larger cruise ships and growing passenger numbers.

Experienced Architectural And Construction Teams Lead Project

Experienced Architectural And Construction Teams Lead Project

Miami-based architectural firm Bermello Ajamil is leading the redesign for Terminal 10, bringing extensive cruise terminal experience to the project.

The firm has already proven its capabilities at Port Canaveral, having designed and delivered the 200,000-square-foot Cruise Terminal 3 to the port in previous years.

Bermello Ajamil’s portfolio includes some of the world’s most prominent cruise terminals, demonstrating the firm’s expertise in this specialised architectural niche.

The firm designed Royal Caribbean’s Cruise Terminal 10 in Galveston and Cruise Terminal A in Miami, Norwegian Cruise Line’s Cruise Terminal B in Miami, and Disney Cruise Line’s Cruise Terminal 4 in Fort Lauderdale.

This extensive experience with major cruise lines provides valuable insight into each operator’s specific requirements and preferences.

Beyond North America, Bermello Ajamil has worked on cruise terminal projects in Singapore, Hong Kong, Israel, and Mauritius, contributing to its extensive maritime portfolio and global perspective on cruise terminal design.

This international experience allows the firm to incorporate best practices from terminals worldwide whilst adapting designs to local conditions and requirements.

PCL Construction Services of Orlando, Florida is managing the actual construction work on the project.

The company’s local presence provides advantages in terms of familiarity with Florida building conditions, access to regional suppliers and subcontractors, and understanding of local permitting and regulatory requirements.

November 2027 Completion Target With Possible Schedule Adjustments

Port Canaveral anticipates completing the expansion and renovation by November 2027, though officials acknowledge that weather-related delays or other unforeseen circumstances could affect the schedule over the 30-month construction period.

Florida’s hurricane season and summer thunderstorms present potential challenges for outdoor construction work, though modern project management techniques and contingency planning help mitigate such risks.

As construction progresses over the next two and a half years, portions of the terminal may close temporarily, or ships may be rescheduled to different terminals as necessary.

Port Canaveral’s multiple cruise terminals provide flexibility to accommodate such changes without significantly disrupting cruise operations.

The port has implemented digital signage leading to the terminals to alert drivers about which ships are docked at specific locations.

This technology should help ease potential traffic congestion and confusion as terminal assignments shift during construction, ensuring passengers reach the correct facility despite any temporary changes.

Terminal 10 is located at the west turning basin, occupying the southernmost position among the cruise terminals at that location.

The facility is accessible from the north port entrance, a detail that will remain unchanged following the renovation.

The terminal’s strategic positioning allows for efficient ship movements and passenger access whilst minimising conflicts with cargo operations elsewhere at the port.

You Can Still Find Gold In Alaska If You Look Hard Enough

Since the gold rush of 1896, people have traveled north in search of Alaska and Yukon’s fabled gold. On a recent Holland America Line voyage, one young guest struck gold. Just not where anyone expected.

While sailing aboard Zaandam on an Alaska Inside Passage cruise, 9-year-old Corbin Hindriksen of Fort Collins, Colorado, was spending time in the ship’s Lido Pool when something shiny caught his eye at the bottom of the water. Curious, he dove down to investigate and surfaced with what appeared to be a gold ring.

Rather than keeping his unexpected treasure, Corbin immediately brought the ring to the ship’s Guest Services team, believing it likely belonged to another guest. What Corbin didn’t know was that the ring carried decades of memories.

Guest Services quickly recognized the item as a wedding ring that had been reported lost by a guest on the previous sailing. Through Holland America Line’s lost-and-found system, the team was able to identify the owner and begin arrangements to return the ring.

Corbin’s concern didn’t end with turning in the ring. The next day, during the captain’s welcome gathering, he approached Captain Ane Smit and introduced himself. Corbin wanted reassurance that the ring would truly find its way back to its owner. Captain Smit assured him it would.  The young guest’s honesty and determination left an impression.

A few days later, Captain Smit invited Corbin and his family to visit Zaandam’s bridge, where he presented him with a captain’s coin recognizing exceptional service as well as a model of the ship.

The captain noted that Corbin’s first concern was not the value of the ring, but making sure it was returned to its rightful owner.

The ring was shipped back to its owner, Gordon Sherritt of British Columbia, Canada, who was glad to have his wedding ring back, which matched the ring of his partner of 60 years, Alice Sherritt. He was thankful for Corbin’s keen eye and the help from Zaandam’s team in making the connection. “It was wonderful when my wedding ring found its way home,” Sherritt said.

For Corbin’s family, the recognition from the ship’s officers became a lasting memory from their Alaska vacation. His grandmother shared that Corbin serves as a member of the Rocky Mountain Young Marines program, which emphasizes honor and integrity, values he demonstrated with his actions aboard Zaandam.

Every Alaska season brings unforgettable wildlife sightings, glacier views and moments of discovery. This year, one young guest found something even rarer: an opportunity to do the right thing.

Turns out you can still find gold in Alaska if you’re looking in the right places.

9-Year Old Boy Finds Lost Wedding Ring in Cruise Ship Pool

When Gordon Sherritt lost his wedding ring sailing to Alaska on a Holland America Line cruise ship, he didn’t know if he would ever see his 60-year-old ring again as he went home without it.

On the following sailing on Zaandam, a week-long Inside Passage cruise, a nine-year-old boy by the name of Corbin Hindriksen of Fort Collins, Colorado, was enjoying an afternoon in the Lido Pool.

A shiny object at the bottom of the pool caught Corbin’s eye, so he swam down to see what it was.

To Corbin’s surprise, it was a gold ring. He immediately took the ring to Guest Services to turn it in to Lost & Found. He had no idea it was a ring that carried decades of memories.

Guest Services recognized that the ring was the one that was reported lost during the previous cruise.

Through the cruise line’s lost-and-found system, the team was able to identify the owner and begin arrangements to return the ring.

During the captain’s welcome gathering the following day, Corbin introduced himself to Captain Ane Smit and asked if the ring would find its way back to the owner.

The boy’s honesty and determination left a good impression on the captain. He wasn’t concerned about the value of the ring, but about making sure that it was returned to whoever lost it.

To honor the 9-year-old for doing the right thing, Captain Smit invited Corbin and his family to visit the cruise ship’s bridge. Once on the bridge, he presented the boy with a captain’s coin and a model of the ship.

Holland America Line told Cruise Fever that the ring was shipped to its owner, Gordon Sherritt of British Columbia, Canada. He was glad to have his wedding ring back, which matched the ring of his partner of 60 years, Alice Sherritt.

Sherritt said, “It was wonderful when my wedding ring found its way home“.

Explora I and Explora III

The new vessel represents a major milestone for the MSC Group’s luxury cruise brand, becoming the third ship in the fleet and marking the halfway point in its planned expansion to six ships. EXPLORA III also becomes the line’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered ship, reflecting the company’s continued investment in lower-emission technology.

Following her departure from Barcelona, EXPLORA III is sailing to Lisbon before continuing a programme of inaugural voyages across the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, Iceland and Greenland.

The cruise line describes the vessel as a floating luxury hotel, combining spacious accommodation, expanded public areas, new dining venues and enhanced wellness facilities with ocean-focused itineraries.

Larger Ship Brings More Suites And Public Space

EXPLORA III has been built 19.2 metres longer than her two sister ships, allowing for additional accommodation and more guest space throughout the vessel.

The ship features 461 oceanfront suites, made up of 313 Ocean Suites, 109 Ocean Penthouses and 39 Ocean Residences. There are also 104 connecting suites for families and groups, alongside 11 accessible suites.

Among the biggest additions is a second Owner’s Residence, following the single residence found on EXPLORA I and EXPLORA II. The new 315-square-metre accommodation has been designed by internationally acclaimed architect and designer Patricia Urquiola and features premium furnishings, curated artwork, a private steam room, marble bathroom, outdoor whirlpool and expansive private terrace.

Explora III Conservatory Pool

Public spaces have also been redesigned, including a new double-height Lobby featuring marble finishes, cascading Venini chandeliers and a sculptural staircase.

The Conservatory Pool & Bar has been expanded around a 14.7-metre swimming pool beneath a retractable glass roof, while guests can also enjoy three heated outdoor pools, including the adults-only Helios Pool & Bar. Elsewhere on board are five indoor and outdoor whirlpools, 60 private cabanas and additional shaded relaxation areas.

The cruise line says EXPLORA III offers one of the highest public space-to-guest ratios in the cruise industry at 19.5 square metres per guest, supported by what it describes as almost one host for every guest on board.

New Dining, Wellness And Retail Experiences Debut

EXPLORA III introduces several new dining concepts alongside the restaurants already available across the fleet.

Returning venues include Anthology, Sakura, Med Yacht Club, Fil Rouge, Emporium Marketplace and Marble & Co. Grill, all refreshed with updated design features.

Three completely new venues also make their debut. Shore Club on 11 offers Mediterranean-inspired dishes in a poolside setting, while The Chef’s Table by Explora Journeys provides an interactive dining experience combining live preparation and storytelling. The Cellar by Explora Journeys gives guests the opportunity to sample rare wines and indigenous grape varieties with guidance from onboard experts.

The ship also features 12 bars and lounges, including a new Outdoor Cigar Lounge where guests can pair premium cigars with rare whiskies and other spirits.

Explora III Lobby

Wellness facilities have been consolidated into a 726-square-metre Ocean Wellness area on Deck 5, bringing together the spa and fitness facilities in one location. Highlights include a hydrotherapy pool, Finnish sauna, steam room, salt cave, ice fall, heated marble loungers and dedicated relaxation spaces.

New treatments have also been introduced, alongside the Sava Sound Pod, which uses low-frequency sound waves to promote relaxation and recovery. Fitness facilities include Technogym Sand Stone equipment, Reform Pilates machines, a private training studio and expanded outdoor sports facilities featuring a full-size padel court, pickleball, basketball and an extended running track.

Explora III Astern Pool

Families travelling aboard EXPLORA III will also find two dedicated Nautilus Club areas. One space caters for children aged three to five, while another is designed for guests aged six to 17. Explora Journeys said it will continue limiting the number of younger guests on each sailing to preserve the quiet, luxury atmosphere that defines the brand.

As the first LNG-powered vessel in the fleet, EXPLORA III is also equipped to use lower-carbon fuels as they become more widely available, forming part of Explora Journeys’ wider strategy to reduce emissions while continuing its fleet expansion. The brand currently has three ships in service, with another three vessels still to be delivered over the coming years.

Cabin Lockdown and Headcount on Cruise Ship MSC Grandiosa After Overboard Alarm

It’s not a regular occurrence for cruise ship passengers to be on lockdown in their cabins while the entire vessel is searched, so you can understand why some passengers on board MSC Grandiosa were left on edge when that exact situation played out overnight.

MSC Grandiosa cruise ship
MSC Grandiosa

Passengers on the MSC Cruises ship were ordered to return to their staterooms as crew members conducted a full ship wide headcount following a reported man overboard alarm.

The incident took place while the 6,300-capacity cruise ship was sailing through the Mediterranean en route to Palma de Mallorca, Spain.

What Happened

According to reports on social media, shortly after 11:00 PM local time, emergency signals sounded across the vessel.

Cruisers on board reported hearing three distinct beeps over the public address system, which was quickly followed by an urgent announcement instructing all passengers to go directly to their staterooms.

“When the emergency alarm went off, three beeps, the galleria descended into silence,” shared a Reddit user who was on board during the event.

To account for everyone on board, room stewards accompanied by security personnel went door-to-door, scanning guest cruise cards and verifying that all cabin occupants were present.

“We just got checked in our cabin, room steward and one other. Our cards were scanned and room steward checked we were all here,” the passenger updated.

Tracking data from VesselFinder showed MSC Grandiosa drastically reducing its speed to around two knots while executing a series of tight search patterns in the water roughly 26 miles off the coast of Menorca.

Local search-and-rescue boats and helicopters were also deployed to assist in the search operation, according to passenger accounts.

During the headcount, multiple announcements were made over the shipwide loudspeakers in several languages calling specific crew members and families to report immediately to Guest Services.

“A new annoucement happening now, multiple numbers being called out for crew members,” a passenger stated. “Four digit numbers, about five numbers, being asked to go immediately to deck four. Announcements over loudspeakers into all cabins and spaces. It sounded urgent.”

All Clear Given

MSC Grandiosa is a large cruise ship, even by today’s standards. At double-capacity the ship accommodates 4,842 passengers.

After an extended lockdown period while the crew checked more than 2,400 staterooms, the ship’s captain made a final announcement over the PA system.

It was confirmed that all passengers and crew members had been accounted for and that the alert was a false alarm.

“Captain now speaking, announcement it was a false alarm. Very pleased to hear this. Even more pleased to see the response,” the cruiser wrote once the situation was resolved.

Once the all-clear was given, guests were permitted to leave their staterooms and MSC Grandiosa resumed its course to Palma de Mallorca.

We’re glad to hear this was just a false alarm. Cruise ships take these incidents very seriously, and the crew in this case acted quickly and thoroughly to make sure every one accounted for.

MSC Grandiosa is currently on a 7-day round trip sailing from Palma De Majorca and is scheduled to arrive at the final port on Friday, August 7
