After exploring the Great Barrier Reef and Singapore, the ship will sail to Vietnam, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan.

The vessel will then cross the Pacific and sail south from Alaska to Seattle and San Diego prior to calling at ports in Central America, a Panama Canal transit, and a call in Cartagena, Colombia, before returning to Fort Lauderdale.

Guests on the cruise will enjoy 11 overnight and late-night calls in the following ports:

  • Bahia d’ Opunoha, French Polynesia
  • Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

  • Hong Kong, China
  • Keelung (Taipei), Taiwan
  • Nagasaki, Japan
  • Tokyo, Japan
  • Fuerte Amador (Panama City), Panama

Beth Bodensteiner, chief commercial officer for Holland America Line, gave the following statement about this schedule change:

“We know immersive experiences in exciting destinations are always a main draw for those choosing a world cruise. The dozen ports we’ve added in Asia will bring that part of the world to life for our guests.

“From exploring the emerald waters of Halong Bay or snorkeling in Nha Trang to overnight stays in Hong Kong, Nagasaki and Tokyo, the deep exploration of the region provides guests the opportunity to take in the culture and natural beauty of Asia as part of their world cruise.”

Until June 16, 2025, guests who book the 133-day Grand World Voyage receive up to $2,000 USD in onboard credit per guest, a 3% pay-in-full discount, a free Wi-Fi Surf package and more.

Additional perks for all guests who book early include a $500 USD air credit per person if booked through Flight Ease and complimentary roundtrip airport transfers to and from the Fort Lauderdale airport.

Guests who previously booked this cruise will receive communication from the cruise line or their travel agent about these changes.

Virgin Adds Cruises to a New Destination in 2026, Alaska

For the second time in a week, a cruise line has announced new itineraries in Alaska for the 2026 season.

Our free cruise newsletter offers the latest news and deals: Sign Up

Virgin Voyages, an adults only cruise line, will begin sailing to Alaska in May of 2026 on Brilliant Lady. The sailings will range from seven- to 12-days in length and open for bookings to the general public on November 13, 2024.

Brilliant Lady’s cruises to Alaska will depart from both Seattle and Vancouver with the first cruise scheduled for May 21, 2026.

Virgin’s maiden cruise to Alaska will depart from Seattle and visit Ketchikan, Sitka, Tracy Arm Fjord and Prince Rupert B.C.

When the cruise line announced earlier this year that they were planning on sailing to Alaska, their Front(ier) passes completely sold out. Those who bought a Front(ier) pass will get first access to these new itineraries before they open to the public next month.

Virgin Voyages’ CEO Nirmal Saverimuttu gave the following statement about these new sailings,

“We have incredibly high repeat rates, so our Sailors are always challenging us to seek new horizons; they always want to know ‘where else can we sail with Virgin?’ This brand is charting new paths, and the sold-out response to our Front(ier) of the Line passes earlier this year showed us just how sought after our Alaskan itineraries are.

“We continue to reach for the high seas with our itineraries, with Brilliant Lady being no exception. Soon our Sailors can visit one of the world’s most incredible destinations on the No. 1 cruise line, all while enjoying new and exciting artists, chefs and musicians that bring the Virgin vibe.”

Virgin Voyages in port on embarkation day

After the 2026 Alaska cruise season is over, Brilliant Lady will sail from L.A., New York and Seattle offering a range of cruises that include a 16-day trip through the Panama Canal.

Brilliant Lady will be the fourth cruise ship to enter Virgin’s fleet when the vessel debuts in September 2025.

It will be a sister ship to Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady.

Mobile, Alabama Cruise Port Plans to Add Another Cruise Line Next Year

Mobile, Alabama is in talks to bring another cruise line to the southern port as demand is exceeding the terminal’s capacity.

Our free cruise newsletter offers the latest news and deals: Sign Up

Carnival Spirit is currently the only ship that sails out of Mobile, and the terminal has a limitation that city officials want to solve.

mobile alabama carnival spirit cruise ship in port
Carnival Spirit in Mobile, Alabama

Adding another cruise ship will require adding parking spaces.  The current terminal has 500 parking spots, and those spaces sell out quickly.  Even when the smaller 2,000-passenger Carnival Ecstasy sailed out of Mobile, the parking lot was full.

More parking spots equal more revenue for the cruise port, but it also means attracting other cruise lines to sail out of Mobile.

With demand for cruising only growing, city leaders are planning to add another 250 parking spaces so another cruise ship could be accommodated.

The plan would add another two levels to the parking garage, and this could happen as soon as 2025.

Visit Mobile CEO David Clark said that the terminal sells out of parking spaces with every cruise.  But now demand is even higher.

“The demand is already far greater than it’s ever been,” Clark stated. “So that’s a really exciting thing.”

He said that Carnival Ecstasy sailed around 90% capacity, but Carnival Spirit is seeing 100% capacity on every sailing.

According to city leaders, several cruise lines have already contacted the Mobile cruise port, expressing interest in coming to the city.  The main obstacle has been parking capacity, a problem the city intends to solve soon.

An unnamed cruise line could be coming in 2025 and another in 2027 if the Mobile City Council agrees on the parking terminal at the next meeting.

Carnival Spirit is currently offering 6- to 14-night sailings out of Mobile and is scheduled to homeport in the city until 2027.

Disney Cruise Line Ships Ranked From Best To Worst

There is always something magical about Disney, especially Disney Cruise Line. Their ships are idyllic resorts packed with amazing entertainment, character meet-and-greets and more. Disney cruises are expensive, but they’re pretty special.

Cruise Mummy with Disney Wish

But which ship is the best one to cruise on? Which ship captured the hearts of fans, and which has some serious work to do to catch up with the others? You might be surprised!

Let’s take a look at the Disney ships ranked best to worst according to online reviews.

How I gathered the data

I have not sailed on every Disney Cruise Line ship, only a couple of them. But it wouldn’t be fair for me to decide the ranking of all the ships based on my experiences of Disney Magic and Disney Wish alone.

So instead, I turned to the experts – the thousands of people who’ve cruised on a Disney ship before. What fairer way is there to rank the ships than on the overall experience of all the past guests who left a review?

I’ve researched all five Disney ships on three of the biggest cruise ship review websites there are – Cruise Critic, Cruiseline.com and TripAdvisor.

Each one has an average score out of 5 for their reviews. So I’ve taken the averages of those scores to put the ships in order from best to worst, based on public opinion.

Let me tell you – I was shocked to see which ship came in fifth place!

However, before we get to that, let me clarify what ‘worst’ means. ‘Worst ship’ does not mean ‘bad ship’. The Disney ship that came bottom of this list still has a very respectable score of 3.8 out of 5. So it isn’t a terrible ship, and most people still have an amazing time.

Disney Magic

Which is the best Disney cruise ship to go on?

According to customer reviews, the best Disney cruise ship is the Disney Dream, although it has a very similar average review score to Disney Fantasy. All of the Disney cruise ships are popular but Disney Dream is marginally preferred.

Here’s the list of all five ships.

The Best Disney Cruise Ships By Reviews

1. Disney Dream

Disney Dream

The top ship in the Disney fleet, according to customer reviews, is the Disney Dream. Disney Dream launched in 2011 as the first of the Dream Class. She was around 50% bigger than the cruise line’s two prior ships, meaning she had more space to pack in exciting experiences.

Disney Dream is also the ship that will host Marvel at Sea, an experience where guests can meet up to 30 Marvel characters on their cruise. It’s only on limited sailings but is exclusive to Disney Dream, so bear that in mind if you have a Marvel fan in the family.

Marvel Day at Sea – 'Heroes Unite' - Disney Dream

The reviews for Disney Dream are overwhelmingly positive, especially about the quality of the entertainment, the variety of things to do and the amazing crew.

Disney Dream Show

Negatives tend to focus on the ship feeling a little crowded – a lot has been packed in. Some guests feel cramped in the cabins too, but remember there’s no need to spend too much time in your room with so much ship to explore.

2. Disney Fantasy

Disney Fantasy

Disney Fantasy is the sister ship to Disney Dream, launching a year later in 2012. The ships aren’t identical twins, although they are almost identical sizes. Disney Fantasy is better for longer seven-night cruises, while Disney Dream primarily offers three- and four-night sailings.

Disney Fantasy’s exclusive experience is Pixar Day at Sea. Again, this is only available on limited cruises, but if you’ve got a Pixar fan in your cruising group then consider this ship for your cruise. You’ll be able to sing, dance and play with all your favourite characters from that studio.

Pixar Day at Sea - Disney Fantasy

It’s also the ship that has the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique – the famous shop from the theme parks that transforms kids into princesses, knights and pirates.

Reading the reviews, guests love the entertainment and the facilities. Negative reviews for Disney Fantasy are a little odd – there are a lot criticising how the ship is aimed at kids more than adults. Perhaps because the ship focuses on longer itineraries, adults assume there will be more for them?

Youth club

Either way, plenty of adults still have an amazing time, according to the majority of reviews.

3. Disney Wonder

Disney Wonder

Disney Wonder was the second ship to launch for the cruise line back in 1999, and has been well maintained. She is a smaller ship in the fleet, similar to her sister ship Disney Magic, although the core experiences of great dining and live entertainment are very much present.

French Quarter Lounge - Disney Wonder

Having said that, the reviews that are negative do focus on the ship feeling like the most dated in the cruise line. To be fair, Disney Magic has had more upgrades added than her sister ship. Comments on the Disney Wonder include that the ship has some quirks typical of older ships, like a lot of vibration and noise, and there are areas that just feel a bit worn.

But the positives far outweigh any negatives, especially where the families have made the most of the kids’ clubs, daytime entertainment such as quizzes, and the character meet and greets.

Frozen, A Musical Spectacular - Disney Wonder

4. Disney Magic

Disney Magic

Disney Magic is the oldest ship in the fleet for Disney Cruise Lines, but she has been really well maintained. In reading through the customer reviews of the ship, I only saw a couple of minor comments about the ship looking tired and worn, and most people didn’t even mention it.

Instead, people remember the good things – and there are a lot. Reviewers love the classic feel of the ship, including elements such as the Promenade Deck which you can stroll around. There are also more modern additions, including the AquaDunk water slide.

AquaDunk Water Slide

The entertainment and the food get a lot of positive comments, as do the crew across the entire ship.

Waiters on Disney Magic, in particular, get a lot of praise for how they care for their guests on rotational dining and remember their preferences every night. It’s a common theme across Disney cruises though.

dining on a Disney Cruise

Other minor negatives beyond the wear of the ship include the pool being quite small. A lot of the bad reviews are around health protocols during COVID-19, which are no longer relevant.

5. Disney Wish

Disney Wish

The Disney Wish is the newest of the Disney cruise ships, and she is absolutely stunning. She is packed with a lot of exciting features, including the first Disney attraction at sea, the AquaMouse. This takes the ‘water coaster’ idea of the earlier ships and adds better theming plus a story.

Aquamouse

And yet, here the ship is at the bottom of the list!

Let’s start with the positives. Despite the amazing attractions, it’s actually the crew that get the most mentions in reviews. Guests love just how hard they work to offer that Disney experience. On newer ships there can be issues with service and crew standards, but the feedback for the team on Disney Wish is unanimously positive.

Other positive comments mention the quality of the food and the entertainment.

Disney Wish - Pizza station

It’s important to note that newer ships also have fewer reviews, so any low scores can affect the average more. But there are fair comments in the reviews – mostly about the design of the ship.

Passengers say that issues are caused due to bottlenecks and split restaurants, which cause crowds and long delays. For an expensive ship that has been significantly hyped, there seems to be a lot of frustration at these flaws, which will be hard to correct. Other reviews mention the cabins feeling smaller and having limited storage space.

Choosing The Best Disney Cruise Ship For You

Choosing the right Disney ship isn’t as simple as picking the one with the best review scores.

The ships have a lot of similarities, but also some differences. Comparing the features of the Disney ships is important to make sure you have the best experience.

You should also consider the itineraries – finding the right ship is as much about where she cruises as the ship itself.

The bottom line

Every Disney Cruise Line ship has a bit of that Disney magic. Choosing which one is best for you will come down to marginal things.

You might have specific Disney cruise waterslides you want to try, or your kid (or partner) may be a huge Star Wars or Marvel fan. Perhaps you really want to visit one of Disney’s private islands, Castaway Cay or Lighthouse Point.

Just make sure to check out the features each ship has and the itineraries on offer, and you’ll be sure to have an amazing time on your Disney cruise.

What Clothes To Wear On A Cunard Cruise

Cunard Line is a luxury cruise line known for its elegant and sophisticated atmosphere. The cruise line has a distinct dress code that reflects the elegance and tradition the company has maintained for over 175 years.

Couple on a cruise ship

Many travellers wonder if they can wear jeans and similar casual clothing while on a Cunard cruise.

We’ll explore Cunard’s dress codes and provide tips on how to incorporate jeans into your wardrobe, while still sticking to the guidelines.

Cunard’s Daytime Dress Code

During the day, Cunard passengers are free to dress casually and comfortably, including jeans, shorts and T-shirts. Casual clothing is perfectly acceptable for daytime activities such as exploring the ship, attending onboard events or enjoying leisure time on deck.

wearing jeans on a Cunard cruise

However, most people on a Cunard cruise will be dressed very smartly, even in the daytime. Although you can wear casual clothing like jeans during the day, ripped or scruffy jeans aren’t the best choice.

Cunard is known for its elegant and sophisticated atmosphere, and ripped jeans may not align with the overall ambience the cruise line seeks to maintain. The same goes for cut-off jean shorts that are very short and show a lot of flesh.

But if your jeans or denim shorts are smart, there’s no reason why you can’t wear them in the daytime.

Cunard’s Evening Dress Codes

Cunard has two main dress codes for evenings: Gala Evenings (also known as formal nights) and Smart Attire (also known as informal nights).

Gala Evenings

On these nights, passengers are expected to dress up in more formal attire. For men, this typically means a tuxedo, dinner jacket or a dark suit with a tie. For women, this means a formal gown, cocktail dress or dressy separates. Jeans are not considered appropriate for Gala Evenings.

Gala Evening on a Cunard cruise

Smart Attire

On Smart Attire nights, passengers can dress more casually but are still expected to maintain a sense of elegance. For men, this usually means a jacket, collared shirt and dress trousers. Women can wear a dress, skirt or dressy trousers with a blouse.

Smart Attire on a Cunard cruise

Although jeans are not explicitly prohibited during Smart Attire evenings, it’s recommended that you choose dressier, dark-wash jeans without any rips or excessive wear. Pair them with a more formal top and shoes.

So dark jeans and a crisp shirt, or a nice top with smart shoes or heels, are absolutely fine to wear in the evenings on a Cunard cruise.

These dress codes are mainly enforced in the main dining rooms and other public areas of the ship during the evening. When dining in more casual venues or spending time in your own stateroom, you can generally wear what you like, including jeans.

Cunard Packing Tips

When planning your wardrobe for a Cunard cruise, consider the following tips:

  • Bring at least one formal outfit for Gala Evenings.
  • For Smart Attire nights, pack a few versatile pieces that can be dressed up or down, such as dark jeans, blazers, dressy tops or skirts.
  • Don’t forget comfortable clothing for daytime activities and excursions.
  • Pack appropriate footwear, including dress shoes for formal nights and comfortable walking shoes for daytime activities.
  • Remember to check the weather and plan accordingly, bringing layers and appropriate outerwear for the regions you’ll be visiting.

How Late Can You Book A Last-Minute Cruise

Some people are lucky enough to find themselves with immediate free time and enough money to splash out on a last-minute cruise.

Explorer Cruise ship

Perhaps you had to cancel another holiday you had planned, and now you’re stuck not knowing where to go. Or perhaps you had a windfall and want to spend it on enjoying yourself.

Last-minute getaways are thrilling, but is it possible on a cruise? How far do you have to book a cruise in advance? Let me explain…

How late can you book a cruise?

For most cruises, you can book right up until the day before it sets sail. On some rare occasions, you may even be able to book on embarkation day, although most cruise lines won’t allow this due to the logistics involved.

people looking for a cruise

This does vary depending on the ship and itinerary. I did a whole load of test bookings, so scroll down to see that data and which cruise lines let you book for tomorrow.

A few things to consider when booking a last-minute cruise:

  1. You’ll need to pay the whole fare upfront in one go.
  2. Any packages or add-ons, like drinks or Wi-Fi, may be charged at a higher rate as you’ll have missed any advance payment deals.
  3. You’ll likely only be able to choose from a handful of cheaper cabins, and not all types may be available.
  4. You may be limited in your choice of destinations, especially if visas are needed.
  5. You’ll need to arrange your own last-minute transport to the port. Public transport (trains and coaches) can be more expensive if booked late.

Can I book a cruise the day before it leaves?

With most cruise lines, you can book a cruise on the day before it leaves, although some may not allow you to book online.

booking cruise

You should be able to see all of the dates on the cruise line’s website, but you may be directed to call them if it’s a really last-minute booking. That’s because cabin availability can be so limited that the online booking system may struggle to place you properly.

The cruise line may also want to make sure the rooms sell out. They don’t want people to reserve them for a few hours while they think about it, only to change their mind and leave the room unsold when it could have been booked by someone else.

I went online and had a look at the next available cruise for all the major ocean cruise lines.

To be clear, this is not the minimum amount of time that you have to book a cruise in advance – this is just when the next available sailing is. Also, these will be skewed slightly by sailings that are sold out, or cruise lines with fewer ships that aren’t offering itineraries every single day.

So don’t treat this as a scientific, definitive list of when you can book a cruise for each cruise line. Instead, use it as an example of how many cruise lines do offer next-day sailings if you want to book something last minute.

Cruise Line Next Available Sailing
Ambassador Cruise Line Next day
Azamara Next day
Carnival Next day
Celebrity Cruises Next day
Costa Cruises In 12 days
Cunard Line In 4 days
Disney Cruise Line In 5 days
Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines In 5 days
Holland America Line In 2 days
Hurtigruten Next day
Marella Cruises In 6 days
MSC Cruises In 2 days
Norwegian Cruise Line In 3 days
Oceania Cruises Today*
P&O Cruises In 2 days
Princess Cruises Today**
Regent Seven Seas In 6 days
Royal Caribbean In 2 days
Seabourn In 4 days
Silversea Cruises Next day
Viking Cruises In 2 days
Virgin Voyages In 4 days

* With Oceania, cruises departing the same day were listed, but you had to call the company in order to book. So it may not always be possible.

**With Princess Cruises, I was able to complete most of the online booking, at least as far as I could go before paying. So it looks like you can book a same-day cruise. What a whim that would be!

Oceania Insignia

Do cruises get cheaper closer to the date?

In most cases, cruises don’t get cheaper closer to the date of departure. As you get closer to the sailing date, cruises will usually either stay the same price or increase, depending on demand. The exception is when the cruise is struggling to sell out.

The best time to book a cruise is usually when they first go on sale, since you get the widest choice of cabins and the prices tend to be at their lowest.

You can also get some great deals at around 12 weeks before departure. This is when final payments are due, some people cancel and the cruise line knows how many cabins are left to fill.

book a cruise online

Otherwise, common sale times can be a good time to look. Late December and early January tend to have good deals.

Suggested read: When to Book a Family Cruise for Free Child Places

Do cruise prices drop the week before?

If a cruise has not sold out and a lot of cabins are still available, prices can drop in the last week or two before departure. It’s not guaranteed though, so it is not advised to wait for a price drop before you book.

They also drop after around 12 weeks. So if your reason for booking late is to get a good deal, you don’t need to hold out that late.

If there are cruises that you know aren’t selling well – you’ve tried to book and there are lots of cabins left – you could try waiting to see if the price does come down. But if there’s a rush, you may miss out on the cruise completely, so it’s a gamble I wouldn’t recommend.

Do cruises usually sell out?

Most cruises will either sell out or almost sell out, leaving just a few cabins left to book. Depending on the time of year and the itinerary, some cruises may sail at between 50% and 70% capacity, but these are in the minority these days.

Cruises are expensive for cruise lines to run. Cruise ship fuel costs a lot, and they have to order the food for guests in advance, so they can’t risk understocking the ship. It’s always in the best interests of a cruise line to fill each cabin.

making pizzas on a cruise ship

This means that you may be able to get cheap prices on some last-minute cruises, but not always. Typically, cruise lines plan where to position their ships in the world to make sure they mostly sell out.

It’s also worth noting that the higher classes of stateroom or suite almost always sell out first. So if you are able to get a last-minute cruise, expect it to be in one of the most basic cabins on the ship.

Final word

The good news is that you definitely can book a cruise last minute, potentially even on the day of sailing in rare circumstances. So if you have some free time and you’re close enough to port, you can sail off on an exciting getaway with almost no warning.

But don’t hold back in the hope of getting a better deal. It’s a risky strategy that likely won’t pay off, and you may miss out on the cruise.

Be sure to read my guide on the best way to book a cruise, since last-minute cruises may need you to call the cruise line rather than booking online.

Royal Caribbean’s Utopia of the Seas Reroutes to Labadee Due to Weather Concerns

Royal Caribbean International has announced a change to the itinerary of the Utopia of the Seas, cancelling two ports.

Utopia of the Seas

Initially scheduled to sail from Port Canaveral on 28th October 2024 to visit Nassau and Perfect Day at CocoCay, the cruise will now head to Labadee, Haiti, due to adverse weather conditions in the Bahamas.

This decision was made in consultation with the company’s Chief Meteorologist, Craig Setzer, to prioritise the safety and comfort of all passengers and crew members, after some poor weather conditions were tracked.

“Along with Chief Meteorologist, Craig Setzer, we’ve been monitoring some adverse weather along our intended path. In order to steer clear of any increment weather conditions, we’ll need to cancel our visits to Nassau, Bahamas and Perfect Day at CocoCay, and we’ll enjoy a visit to our private destination, Labadee, Haiti instead.“

Royal Caribbean communication sent to guests

Labadee, a private destination owned by Royal Caribbean, has been selected as the new port of call.

This adjustment follows Labadee’s recent reopening to cruise ships, marked by the visit of the Adventure of the Seas on 8th October 2024, after a seven-month closure due to safety concerns in Haiti.

The cruise line has emphasised that the safety and well-being of guests and crew are their top priorities, assuring passengers that the ship is one of the safest places to be during adverse weather conditions.

The Utopia of the Seas, part of Royal Caribbean’s Oasis Class, entered service in July 2024. It offers short cruises to the Bahamas from Port Canaveral, typically including visits to Nassau and Perfect Day at CocoCay. Built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique in France, the ship is designed to provide a luxurious and comfortable experience for all passengers.

Guests who’ve booked the correct cruise travel insurance with missed port cover will be able to claim for both the cancelled Nassau and Perfect Day visits.

Holland America Line Alters 2026 World Voyage Itinerary, Skips Red Sea Due to Security Concerns

Holland America Line has announced significant changes to the 2026 World Voyage itinerary for the MS Volendam, citing the ongoing security concerns in the Red Sea region.

HAL MS Volendam

The cruise line will bypass the Red Sea, as well as Europe and Africa, on its 133-night voyage. Instead, the itinerary will now focus on five continents, with visits to Asia, the United States, and Central America.

The revised itinerary affects the last 54 days of the voyage, which will now include 51 ports across 23 countries.

The ship will no longer travel from the Maldives to Egypt via the Suez Canal, as initially planned for early April 2026, and will also skip its European stops.

This change results in the removal of 19 ports, including those in the Maldives, Egypt, Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Norway, and England.

Additionally, stops in Phuket, Thailand, and Colombo, Sri Lanka, have been removed to facilitate a more efficient route back to North America via the Pacific Ocean.

In place of the removed ports, new destinations have been added to the itinerary, including ports in Vietnam, Taiwan, and Japan.

From 24 March to 12 April 2026, MS Volendam will visit a trio of Vietnamese ports: Ho Chi Minh City (Phu My), Nha Trang, and Halong Bay near Hanoi.

The ship will also make overnight calls in Hong Kong, and Nagasaki and Tokyo, Japan. In Taiwan, the ship will call at Kaohsiung and Keelung (Taipei).

The new itinerary offers a diverse and enriching travel experience, allowing passengers to explore a wide array of cultures and landscapes. The addition of an extra day, due to crossing the International Date Line, further enhances the voyage, making it one of the longest around-the-world cruises available.

There have been concerns over the Red Sea for some time now, but Holland America Line had previously held off on announcing changes to the itinerary in case the situation de-escalated.

However, it can’t announce a change as significant as this with short notice, which is why the cruise line has decided to act now.

The Best Cruises For Over-50s

There are a lot of reasons why people look for cruises that are specifically for those aged 50 and over.

In this guide, I’ve picked out 14 of the best cruise lines for the over-50s. I’ve looked at what they offer and why they’re worth considering for your next cruise.

over 50s on a cruise

Different types of over-50s cruise

Before I dive into the list of cruise lines, there’s something important to clarify.

The idea of over-50s cruises is a little vague, because there are different groups within that age range with different ideas of what they want from a cruise.

family on a sailing cruise

You might be looking for an active cruise with plenty of port visits and lots of exciting walking, plus various gym classes on board.

In the last 20 years or so, a lot of mainstream cruise lines have become very family-oriented. So you may not like the idea of being surrounded by kids running and shouting.

If you’re a little older or have some mobility issues, you might instead think more of a cruise for the older generation – those quite a bit over 50 – where small ships offer comfort and lots of places to unwind.

Your idea of the ideal over-50s cruise could be a truly luxury getaway, or an authentic throwback to traditional cruising. Or it could be that you specifically want a cruise for singles over 50, if you want to meet new friends.

My point is that cruise holidays for over-50s aren’t all the same. In this guide, I won’t just tell you what each cruise line offers, but also make clear what kind of cruiser they’re suited to.

1. Marella

🏆 Best Value

Marella Cruise ship

Marella Cruises offer some of the best value cruises for over-50s of all the cruise lines. A lot of cruises on this list are considered to be ‘all-inclusive’, but Marella’s fares are typically lower than those, despite the fact that your drinks and tips are included.

What’s also great about Marella is that the cruise line is owned by the TUI Group, which also operates your flights. Rather than dealing with separate companies – and the potential stress of missing your ship due to a delayed flight – everything is seamless, as you’re cared for by the same company from the moment you get to the airport.

Tui Plane

Marella Cruises are good for over-50s who want to enjoy a British cruise, with their favourite drinks in the bar and tea and coffee facilities in their room – something you won’t always get with other cruise lines.

Tip: If you want to avoid families with kids altogether, choose a cruise on Marella Explorer 2. It’s the only adults-only ship in the Marella fleet.

2. Saga Cruises

🏆 Best Luxury

Cruise Mummy with Saga cruise ship

Saga specialises in land holidays and cruises exclusively for the over-50s market. And when it comes to cruising, it makes everything really simple by offering an adults-only all-inclusive experience that is hard to rival.

Almost everything is included, including transfers from your home right to the port (Saga’s cruises only sail from UK ports). So once you’ve booked, there’s nothing you need to worry about at all. You’ll be whisked directly to the ship where all your food, drinks, excursions and more are covered as part of the fare.

Saga’s holidays tend to be popular with a slightly older crowd, so expect to see more over-60s and over-70s on the ships. Another reason they’re popular with mature travellers is that they include travel insurance tailored to an over-50s crowd, which can sometimes be hard to get at a reasonable price.

If you want to enjoy meeting other travellers exclusively over 50, where everything is taken care of for you, then Saga could be the way to go.

3. Regent Seven Seas

🏆 Best Ultra Luxury

Regent Seven Seas, to be blunt, is not suitable for everyone’s budget. That’s because it is one of the most luxurious travel companies in the world, so cruises don’t come cheap.

Regent Seven Seas Cruise

But if you are looking for an ultra-luxury experience, you will be very impressed by what Regent Seven Seas has to offer. Expect exquisite service from one of the most attentive crews at sea, including your own personal butler. Quaff fine Champagnes and sumptuous meals (all covered by your fare), and jet to your port in style with Business Class flights included on certain suite categories.

A Regent Seven Seas cruise is ideal for the over-50s who wish to really spoil themselves. You might be looking for that once-in-a-lifetime getaway, or want to experience the very finest that cruising has to offer – including some exceptional longer itineraries.

4. Cunard

Cunard is one of the few remaining truly traditional cruise lines. Their limited fleet of cruise ships are not antiquated, but are perfectly balanced between the authentic cruising experience of old and the modern approach to luxury service.

Cunard transatlantic cruise

This means regular formal nights that are properly observed by almost all guests on board. You receive white glove service from the crew, who go above and beyond to cater to your needs.

The ships aren’t packed with facilities, but instead offer culture and enrichment tied to your itinerary. And while not exclusively for guests over 50, most passengers who choose Cunard are in that age bracket.

Cunard isn’t the right cruise line for everyone. If you want more flexibility and a more casual atmosphere, consider another option. But if you want to feel like you’re aboard an authentic cruise of old, then you’ll struggle to find something better.

5. Ambassador Cruise Line

Ambassador Cruise Line is very new to the market, having only started operating in 2022. Using smaller ships purchased from existing cruise lines and renovated to a high standard, Ambassador is another line that is looking to tailor voyages to the over-50s market.

Ambassador cruise

Almost all Ambassador cruises are for adults only. There are just a couple of itineraries per year designated as ‘multi-generational’, where children are invited.

Otherwise, you will always be among other adults, including a lot of solo travellers thanks to the dedicated single cabins. The cruises are all from the UK.

Ambassador cruise line - reception

Consider Ambassador Cruise Line as being similar to Saga, but not taking the all-inclusive approach. Your fare is more basic, allowing you to add on the features you want and potentially save money.

If you’re looking for a simple, contemporary cruise line sailing from the UK with newly updated ships then make sure you check out the sailings Ambassador has to offer.

6. Fred. Olsen Cruises

Fred. Olsen - Bolette

Fred. Olsen Cruises is long established as one of the great cruise lines for British travellers, especially those in the over-50s age bracket. This cruise line offers a wide range of sailings around the world, with many regional port departures from the UK helping to limit your initial travel time.

I’m 38 and when I took a Fred. Olsen cruise, a few guests remarked that I looked ‘quite young’ to be cruising with Fred!

The fleet of ships includes some newer additions in recent years, which have been tastefully refurbished to offer a high-quality cruising experience. The ships are stylish and have a classic feel to them, but with a more relaxed atmosphere than you’d find on a cruise line like Cunard.

Most cruises are for adults only, but there are some itineraries that welcome families, so be aware of that when you book.

One of the best reasons to choose a Fred. Olsen cruise is if you want to experience the Northern Lights. There are many itineraries focusing on the Arctic regions during peak times for these natural phenomena, catering to those over-50s who want to tick them off their bucket list.

7. Azamara

Azamara is a premium luxury cruise line. Although not quite as luxurious as a cruise line like Regent Seven Seas, it is undoubtedly an experience elevated above many other mainstream cruise lines.

Azamara cruise ship

Azamara is a good choice for anyone interested in sleek ships, fine dining and premium service but with a relaxed atmosphere that doesn’t feel too formal.

Azamara - passengers with the captain

But the real difference with an Azamara cruise is the itineraries. The cruise line plans its sailings to spend more time in port, including late evening departures and more overnight stays.

If you’re someone who wants to see more of the world, and sample the entertainment in cities that come to life at night, then you’ll love Azamara.

8. Holland America Line

Cruise Mummy with Holland America Line

Holland America Line is a Dutch cruise company with a wonderful fleet of ships. In fact, people often book a Holland America cruise because of the ship itself. They are beautifully appointed with incredible artwork, and the public spaces offer some fantastic places to unwind during the day and evening.

It’s a more premium cruise line, albeit not quite as luxury as Azamara, but with an elevated dining experience and better service than you’d find on a family-focused line.

Holland America is another cruise line that has sailings all over the world too. These include some of the best Alaska cruise itineraries, and a lot of sailings throughout Asia and Australasia. If you want to see the world by cruise ship, you’ll be able to choose from some thrilling itineraries.

9. P&O Cruises

P&O Cruises is regarded as one of the best British cruise lines. You get all the little touches to make you feel comfortable as a Brit at sea, but with a really high level of service including varied dining in some exquisite restaurants. And all on a fleet of ships that are modern, beautifully appointed and very spacious.

P&O Aurora

P&O Cruises is almost a British equivalent to Holland America in terms of atmosphere, if you choose the right ships. That’s because P&O has a slightly wider audience, with some ships more tailored to families.

But there are adults-only ships in the fleet – namely Arcadia and Aurora.

Choose a cruise with P&O if you want an upmarket experience on a ship tailored to the British audience, including that essential kettle in your cabin!

10. Viking Ocean

Viking Ocean cruise ship

Viking Ocean Cruises is an offshoot of Viking River Cruises, arguably the world’s most successful river cruise line. The ocean cruise arm of the business very much reflects what made the river cruise ships so successful: small, elegant vessels that are tasteful and contemporary, with a focus on the destination.

All Viking Ocean cruise ships are for adults only. Itineraries are very much focused on helping guests to explore the world. The ships are a way to get you to the most exciting ports you could visit.

adult passengers on a Viking cruise ship

That doesn’t mean they are basic and boring. The fleet is the newest and one of the most stylish contemporary options on this list. However, the real attraction of a Viking cruise is the chance to see the world and to learn about it as you travel, with excellent enrichment programmes and fascinating lectures.

11. Silversea

Silversea

Silversea is considered to be a rival to Regent Seven Seas. The cruise line offers a similar standard of luxury cruising, with almost everything included in your fare and the personal services for a butler.

Similar to Regent Seven Seas, it is best suited to either over-50s who have a significant budget to put towards their cruises, or the crowd who want to live the high life, even if just for a week.

The Restaurant on Silversea

It’s an ultra-luxury cruise line, so it does have a more formal atmosphere than some others, and tradition is important to the guests.

It’s also important to point out that Silversea is one of the only ultra-luxury cruise lines to also offer expedition cruising. These are sailings to those truly hard-to-reach ports where you can experience the wonders of the natural world, such as the Galapagos Islands and the Antarctic.

Silversea with view

For the over-50s seeking true adventure, but from the exceptional comfort of a luxury ship, Silversea Expeditions itineraries are worth checking out.

12. Seabourn

Seabourn ship

Seabourn is another option for any over-50s guests who wish to enjoy a taste of the luxury lifestyle. Seabourn’s ships are similar in presentation to those sailing for Regent Seven Seas and Silversea, but with a slightly more relaxed atmosphere on board.

If you’re interested in luxury cruising but don’t want to stress about etiquette, then Seabourn is an interesting option. The ships aren’t completely casual, and you’ll still be expected to dress appropriately for formal nights. However, the onboard ambience is a little less traditional and a bit more modern.

people on a Seabourn cruise

Your cruise is still more inclusive than many lines, with all your drinks and speciality dining covered. Unlike other ultra-luxury cruise lines, you won’t get flights and transfers included as standard. So you need to make sure they’re booked as part of your package.

13. Oceania Cruises

Oceania Cruise ship

Oceania is a premium luxury cruise line that bridges the gap between lines such as Holland America and Azamara, and the more luxury cruises offered by Regent Seven Seas and Silversea.

This means you get to enjoy the sort of luxury experience that high-end ships have to offer, but without the super-high prices. For many itineraries, you’ll often pay around half of what you would on the most luxurious cruise lines on this list, but you’ll still enjoy a really classy experience.

What really makes Oceania unique is the food. It is renowned for its exceptional dining, both in the main dining room and the wide range of speciality restaurants, all of which are included in the fare. Foodies love the variety and quality of dishes offered on all Oceania ships.

14. SeaDream Yacht Club

A lot of the cruise lines on this list operate exclusively small ships, which are great for the over-50s who want to avoid big crowds and busy lines. If that sounds like you, then SeaDream Yacht Club could be what you’re looking for.

SeaDream Yacht Club

As the name suggests, these yacht-like cruise ships are small and have an intimate atmosphere, but that doesn’t mean they’re boring.

SeaDream is known for occasionally dropping anchor and unleashing the wide range of watersports equipment from the onboard marina, giving guests the chance to try kayaking, paddleboarding, banana boats and more.

Seadream water sports

SeaDream’s cruises are truly global, so this is also a good cruise line for anyone who wants to soak up the sun in tropical destinations. If you want to feel like you own a luxury yacht, a SeaDream cruise is a great way to replicate the experience.

Couples on SeaDream

Final word

The sheer variety of cruise lines that are well-suited to over-50s means there’s always a ship that is perfect for you.

You don’t just have to limit yourself to those aimed exclusively at over-50s either. As this list proves, a lot of cruise lines are open to all adults. Some which have adults-only ships among a wider fleet, where you’ll still have a fantastic experience.

Whether you’re looking for fantastic value from Marella, ultra-luxury from Regent or the fine dining of Oceania, you are certainly spoiled for choice. My recommendation? Try as many as you can afford!
