Princess Cruises Enhances Premier Fare Package But Increases Prices For Some Guests

Princess Cruises has announced that its Premier cruise fare will now offer guests even more benefits, although for US guests the price of the package will also increase.

Sapphire Princess sailing on the water with a sunset behind the ship.

The updated package is a result of a change to the Premier Beverage Package that’s included in the Premier fare, which now includes almost every drink onboard.

Previously, the drinks package included drinks up to the value of $18, but that’s been increased to $20 with the new package.

Guests who book a Premier fare can enjoy these drinks unlimited:

  • Top-shelf spirits, reserve wines and signature cocktails by mixologist Rob Floyd
  • A selection of 75+ spirits, 40+ wines by the glass, 20+ cocktails
  • Premier wines by the glass including Duckhorn, Stag’s Leap, and Grgich Hills
  • Private Woodford Reserve Bourbon Selection created exclusively for Princess
  • Personalised Jack Daniel’s Whiskey Single Barrel Select
  • 25% off wine bottles (including rare vintages)
  • 25% off large bottles of water

Another enhancement has also been made to the package regarding speciality dining – that will now be unlimited for Premier guests too, provided you’re cruising from the US.

Previously, guests on a Premier fare would enjoy two free speciality dining meals, but now they can enjoy a speciality restaurant every night of their cruise at no extra charge.

The changes aren’t free for all Premier guests though, as the price for Princess Premier in the US has increased to $90 per day.

For the UK, the price remains at £65, and it includes the updated drinks package but it remains at just two speciality dining meals per cruise.

These 8 Drinks Are FREE on Princess Cruises

Most of the drinks that you can enjoy on a cruise need to be paid for as an extra, unless you’re on an all-inclusive cruise or you’ve booked a drinks package. Princess Cruises is no different – if you don’t have a drink package, you’ll need to make sure you’ve got some money set aside for your drinks during your sailing.

Free iced water flavoured with fresh cucumber and orange slices on Princess cruise ship

But there are a selection of drinks available for free on each Princess Cruises ship, so if you are on a tighter budget, you won’t go thirsty.

Water, lemonade, tea – here’s what’s free

There are eight drinks you can enjoy for free on a Princess cruise – tap water, lemonade, iced tea, hot tea, brewed coffee, hot chocolate, milk and fruit juice. Some of these drinks are only available at specific locations on the ship too, and may incur a charge elsewhere.

Free water, coffee and fruit juice on Princess cruise ship

Compared to other cruise lines, Princess Cruises offers slightly less than the average number of free drinks, especially with the limitations on where you can get those drinks. It’s not a huge difference – Royal Caribbean offers 9 free drinks, for example – but you may still get a little frustrated if you don’t want to spend extra.

That’s why a lot of people will prefer a Princess drinks package. Yes, you have to pay extra, but once you’ve paid for it up-front, you’re done and you can enjoy the drinks you want without thinking about the extra cost.

And Princess has a lot of different drinks package options you can choose from. They aren’t just for people who drink alcohol – there are non-alcoholic packages, dedicated soda packages, and even specialist coffee packages.

Read more: Princess Cruises Drinks Packages

My drinks package calculator is a handy tool that will help you work out whether it’s worthwhile, based on the cost of the package, the typical Princess Cruises drinks prices, and how much you think you’ll want to drink on your cruise.

Where to find the free drinks

1. Water

Water is one of the few drinks that is available freely on Princess Cruises in most locations around the ship. Specifically tap water though – bottled water is available but it isn’t free, so you’ll need to pay if you prefer a specific brand.

You can get tap water in any of the restaurants on your Princess ship, either as a glass or as a jug with ice.

You can also get a glass of water at any bar on the ship, while there will be water machines available in the buffet restaurant where you can help yourself too.

Free iced water on Princess cruise ship

In The Sanctuary and the Spa, you’ll find a selection of iced water dispensers with water that’s flavoured with fresh cucumber or orange slices.

Free iced water flavoured with fresh cucumber and orange slices on Princess cruise ship

The tap water in your room is safe to drink too, so you’ll always have something to drink in the middle of the night. Tap water is heavily filtered and treated on a cruise ship to make sure it’s safe and suitable for drinking. You can request an ice bucket from your room steward too, if you want to cool it down (the tap water might not be the coldest).

Some people even say that the tap water on a cruise ship is better tasting than that at home. Obviously, home tap water varies all over the world and even within countries, so this might not be true for you, but it’s very clean and can be refreshing on those warmer days.

2. Lemonade

Lemonade is a cruising staple – many cruise lines offer it as a free option, and Princess Cruises is no different. On some ships (but not all) you can get lemonade free from the Horizon Court buffet restaurant during lunch and dinner, so between 11.30 am and 11 pm.

This is American-style lemonade, which means it isn’t carbonated. It’s sweet but with a definite sour kick to it – it feels more authentic than some of the lemonades you might be used to if you normally drink a lemonade soda.

If you’re determined to cruise on a budget, but you don’t want to just drink water, it’s easy enough to pop into the buffet and grab a glass of lemonade when you need a drink, rather than paying for a soft drink at the bar.

3. Fruit juice

While lemonade is offered for lunch and dinner in the Horizon Court, you won’t normally be able to get it for breakfast. Instead, fresh fruit juice is available that you can help yourself to.

You’ll find jugs of orange juice by the tea and coffee…

Free hot water, coffee, regular milk, skim milk and orange juice on Princess cruise ship

But, if you prefer something a little more exotic, head over to the food section and along with the fruit and smoothies you may find freshly squeezed juices of the day, like watermelon juice.

Free watermelon juice on Princess cruise ship

Fruit juices are also included if you’d prefer to have your breakfast in the Main Dining Room. Your waiter will bring your chosen juice to your table.

Breakfast in the dining rooms is a lot more laid back and slower, so if you’re just looking for a quick drink and snack before embarking on an excursion, the buffet is the better choice.

4. Iced tea

You’ll be able to ask for unsweetened iced tea on a Princess Cruise in the Main Dining Room, while it’s also available for you to enjoy in the Horizon Court.

Free iced tea and orange juice on Princess cruise ship

It’s only free in these locations though – if you order it from a bar or from the International Cafe in the atrium of the ship, you will have to pay for it. If you’re craving iced tea then try to grab one when they’re available freely.

5. Hot tea

If you like your tea to be a little more British or Asian in style, then hot tea is also available during breakfast in the Main Dining Room, and throughout the day in the Horizon Court buffet. Varieties include English Breakfast tea, Earl Grey and Herbal Tea.

Free hot tea on Princess cruise ship

On most Princess Cruises, you won’t have a kettle in your stateroom – although sometimes on sailings out of the UK and in Asia they will be provided. Usually, you’ll need to head to the Main Dining Room or buffet restaurant if you want your tea fix.

Again, ordering hot tea from other locations around the ship, including the International Cafe, will incur an extra charge.

6. Brewed coffee

Brewed coffee is the same as hot tea on a Princess ship – you’ll be able to enjoy it in the Main Dining Room and in the Horizon Court buffet restaurant without paying any extra. Some ships even have self-service coffee machines by some of the pools.

Free brewed coffee on Princess cruise ship

But it is only standard coffee – any speciality coffees will incur an extra charge, and regular brewed coffee also needs to be paid for at the International Cafe.

There is a special drinks package just for coffee lovers – the Grounds Coffee Package includes 15 speciality beverages that you can order at various bars around the ship.

Kettle, tea and coffee on Princess cruise ship

7. Milk

Wherever you can get tea and coffee you can also find milk. And that means that if you’d like to enjoy a glass of the white stuff, you can do so free of charge. You can pour yourself a glass of regular or skim milk in the buffet, or request a glass of milk in the main dining room.

If you’re plant-based, vegan, lactose intolerant or have a dairy allergy, you’ll be pleased to know that you can also request soya or almond milk. If you’d like this in your room to use in your tea and coffee, just call room service and they will bring you a jug of dairy-free milk free of charge.

Free milk on Princess cruise ship

8. Hot chocolate

Some of the coffee machines that you’ll find in the buffet area also make hot chocolate. So if this is your drink or choice or you want to treat the kids, then be sure to check the machine to see if there’s a button for hot chocolate, as depending on the ship, some have it.

Free hot chocolate on Princess cruise ship

Other ways you can get free drinks

There are some other free drinks you can enjoy on a Princess cruise, but they aren’t available completely freely for all guests.

Hit the art auctions for free fizz

If you attend one of the art auctions on a Princess sailing, you’ll normally be given a free glass of sparkling wine as you arrive. Guests who’ve had a drink are more likely to spend more on art, so it’s a small price for Princess to offer when they are looking for guests to treat themselves to a new painting.

free mimosa at art auction

Book Club Class or above

There is a selection of free drinks available to guests if they book a Mini Suite or above on a Princess sailing.

Mini Suite guests will be welcomed on-board with a glass of sparkling wine, which is upgraded to Champagne for guests in a Club Class Mini Suite or a full Suite. Club Class is called the Reserve Collection on the newest ships.

Club Class/Reserve Collection guests and above will also enjoy a complimentary half-bottle of white and half-bottle of red wine in their room for their arrival. These are only to be consumed in your room though – you can’t take them to the dining rooms.

And if you book a full Suite, you’ll arrive to a fully-stocked minibar which is yours to enjoy freely – for that first round. Once you’ve consumed your free minibar drinks, you’ll be expected to pay for any further drinks.

But you do also get free bottled water delivered to your room daily, which is a nice additional perk of being a suite guest. Plus you can head to the speciality dining restaurants for breakfast, which includes mimosas.

Go to onboard events

Select special events may be available where you can enjoy a free drink with Princess Cruises, although many of these vary.

They can also depend on your stateroom, or your Captain’s Circle membership (the Princess Cruises loyalty program). Guests in a Suite, or who are at the Elite level of the Captain’s Circle, may get exclusive invites to parties or a special wine-tasting event (where you don’t have to spit out your free drink!)

Suggested read: Princess Cruises Happy Hour

Free wine on Princess cruise ship

Look out for events hosted by the Effy jewellery store on the ship too, as special occasions there may include a free glass of fizz when you arrive. It’s bad form to turn up, have the drink and then leave immediately though.

Don’t forget to bring your own!

While it’s not ‘free’ to bring your own drinks on-board a cruise, since you have to have bought them in advance, it can be a cheaper way to enjoy a drink.

Guests with Princess are allowed to bring an unlimited amount of soft drinks and water, provided it is in sealed commercial cans, bottles or cartons.

You can’t bring flasks on board since the cruise line will argue they could contain additional alcohol beyond the permitted levels. And sneaking alcohol on board a cruise ship is a bad idea. Your luggage will be scanned, and it will be searched.

You’re welcome to bring one bottle of wine or Champagne onto the ship with you per person, as long as it’s no bigger than 750ml. It’s only to be consumed in your stateroom, unless you pay a $15 corkage fee – then you can drink it anywhere, including the bars and the restaurants. You can also bring extra bottles but then the corkage fee is mandatory.

So you could bring a few bottles of alcohol, or a lot of cans of your favourite soft drink, in your suitcase. But obviously, that’ll impact how much else you’re able to pack and bring with you, so bear that in mind.

Is it worth sacrificing a couple of outfits so you can save on the cost of a couple of drinks at the bar?

The bottom line

The selection of free drinks from Princess Cruises isn’t exactly extensive, but it’s enough that you could get by if you really didn’t want to spend extra on a cruise. Especially if you also brought some extra drinks with you to enjoy in your stateroom.

But if you’re someone who gets thirsty often, and who has a particular drink that you prefer – or if you just want to relax with a cocktail or a beer – then definitely check out the Princess drinks packages that are included in the Princess Premier and Princess Plus fares, as they might offer much better value than paying for each drink individually.

Carnival Magic Issues Rare Passenger Instruction Due To Deteriorating Weather Conditions

Carnival Cruise Line was forced to issue a rare passenger alert on Tuesday 14th August, as it had to cut short its visit to Grand Turk.

Carnival Magic

Due to deteriorating weather conditions in the region, particularly in Grand Turk, the cruise line requested that all passengers return to the ship earlier than originally scheduled. The new return time was set for 2:30 pm.

In a bid to amplify the message, the cruise line not only tried to contact guests directly but also had brand ambassador John Heald share the news on his Facebook page, to make sure guests knew to return to the ship promptly.

The deteriorating conditions were attributed to the impact of Hurricane Ernesto, which affected the cruise industry in the eastern Caribbean.

It’s not uncommon for cruise lines to make changes to itineraries to avoid problematic weather. It is rare, though, for a cruise ship to visit a port but then realise it has to leave early.

There’s always a risk that some passengers won’t see the message and so would return to the ship at the normal time. For this reason, cruise lines will normally be extra cautious and skip a port if there are concerns that their schedule might be impacted by the weather.

Hurricane Ernesto has proven to be fairly unpredictable already though, and has caused alterations to several other cruises in the region.

It’s hurricane season, so if you’re booking a Caribbean cruise for this time of year you absolutely must take out suitable cruise insurance with missed-port cover!

MSC Cruises Reveals Details Of Its Smart Container Revolution

MSC Cruises and its sister brand, Explora Journeys, have adopted innovative “smart containers” to enhance the quality and freshness of food delivered to their cruise ships.

MSC Armonia

These smart containers utilise advanced technology to monitor and control conditions such as temperature and humidity during transportation. This ensures that food products remain fresh from the warehouse to the ship.

The company has revealed that it started using these smart containers in 2023 to transport food from a supply warehouse in Genoa, Italy, and it has now reported a significant improvement in food quality compared to 2022.

Although the cruise lines source about 96% of their food locally, some goods still need to be transported from global warehouses. The smart containers, monitored 24/7 by a central service centre in Antwerp, Belgium, provide real-time data and alerts to address any issues promptly.

As well as maintaining the perfect humidity and temperature to keep the food in top condition, it can also flag when a container has accidentally opened en-route, so that it can be resolved quickly, without spoilage.

It’s been particularly useful in destinations where sourcing food locally has been tough. Fresh seafood can now go from port to plate within 48 hours, overseen by celebrity chef Masaharu Morimoto, the line’s Fresh Fish Ambassador.

The integration of smart container data into the cruise lines’ IT systems allows for continuous access and monitoring, ensuring the highest standards of food quality for guests.

Have you cruised with MSC since 2023 and noticed a difference in the freshness of the food?

Carnival Asks Passengers to Return to Ship Earlier than Planned Due to Worsening Weather Conditions

Cruise travelers on Carnival Magic who were visiting Grand Turk were asked to return to the ship sooner than originally planned this afternoon.

Our free cruise newsletter offers the latest news and deals: Sign Up
Carnival Magic

As Hurricane Ernesto makes its way northward, Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald took to his Facebook page to update Carnival fans of the developments.

In the Facebook post Heald wrote,

“This is an update for Carnival Magic guests only. If you are ashore in Grand Turk, please return to the ship by 2:30 PM. Weather conditions are expected to deteriorate this evening, and the ship will have to sail earlier than planned.”

Grand Turk is a relatively small island that is about 7 square miles in size.  Most cruise passengers spend time in the small port area, but those on excursions through the cruise line will be in communication with the ship to make sure they are aware of the earlier departure.

Hurricane Ernesto’s current projected path. Photo Credit: NOAA and the National Hurricane Center

Currently a Category 1 hurricane, Ernesto is moving up the Eastern Caribbean at 16 miles per hour and is roughly 200 miles northwest of Puerto Rico.

The cruise line has already made changes to cruise itineraries that were impacted by the storm and the port stop in Puerto Rico was already cancelled for Carnival Magic.

Carnival Cruise Line is monitoring the storm from their Fleet Operations Center in Miami and keeping guests informed of any changes.

22 Favourite Drinks You Must Try On Your Next Cruise

I love that feeling of relaxing on a cruise ship once you’re settled in, and grabbing your favourite drink to enjoy the view as you sail from port.

But there are so many amazing drinks to choose from – how do you know which one to go for first? Are you the kind of person to stick to what you love, or try everything?

Two cocktails on a cruise ship table, one red with a strawberry garnish and the other green with a lemon slice. The setting features a modern, geometric-patterned carpet and stylish furniture, with passengers in the background enjoying the ambiance.

I asked my Facebook followers for some inspiration for their favourite cruise drinks, and here’s what they said:

1. Pina Colada

A hand holding a Piña Colada garnished with a pineapple slice inside a theater on the Royal Caribbean Ovation of the Seas. Passengers are seated, and a stage with blue lighting is visible in the background, creating a relaxed, pre-show atmosphere.

The Pina Colada is one of the all-time classic tropical cocktails. The blend of rum, coconut and pineapple is the ideal drink for a Caribbean cruise, though feel free to enjoy it anywhere!

2. Aperol Spritz

Two cocktails on a wooden table aboard a cruise ship: a yellow drink with a dried citrus garnish and an Aperol Spritz with an orange slice. A bowl of mixed nuts is also on the table, with cozy seating and decorative pillows in the background, creating a relaxed and inviting atmosphere.
Photo: Paula Mulvihill

The Aperol Spritz has become extremely popular in bars on land and at sea. While it was invented in the early 1900s, it seems to be everywhere in the last few years especially. A mix of Aperol and prosecco, topped up with soda, it’s certainly refreshing but it also splits opinion for many!

I didn’t like Aperol Spritz for a long time, despite my continued efforts to try it. That was, however, until someone suggested switching the soda water for lemonade. What a game-changer! I love it now!

3. Miami Vice

A Miami Vice cocktail on a Carnival Cruise ship, featuring vibrant layers of red and yellow slush with a pineapple garnish. The drink is set on a wooden poolside table with passengers lounging and swimming in the background under a bright blue sky dotted with fluffy white clouds.
Photo: Kerry-Anne Mortimer

The Miami Vice is a popular Carnival cocktail that uses existing cocktail blends for a punchy, fruity flavour. It’s a combination of frozen pina colada mix, frozen strawberry daiquiri mix and rum, for a drink that’s as colourful as it is tasty.

4. Mango Meltdown

A Mango Meltdown cocktail on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship, featuring a vibrant mix of yellow and red slush in a branded plastic cup with a straw. The drink is placed on a countertop at the bar, with bartenders in blue uniforms visible in the background.
Photo: Hakey Hendrson

If you love mango then you’ll love this fresh, fruity and frozen cocktail that’s popular on Norwegian Cruise Line. It contains rum and amaretto, mixed with mango puree and strawberry mix. A winner on those sunny days when you want to cool off!

5. Sparkling Wine

A bottle of Peller Estates Ice Cuvée Classic sparkling wine with a glass filled and placed on a glass table aboard a cruise ship. The setting includes elegant decor with plush seating in the background, creating a refined and relaxed ambiance for enjoying a luxurious drink.
Photo: Janet Kench

Not every drink needs to be a cocktail, and a glass of sparkling wine is often the ideal way to toast your relaxing holiday. It’s a great drink for people watching from a bar or when you’re about to take in a theatre show, or to celebrate a special occasion.

6. Mimosa

A mimosa served in a champagne flute alongside a tall glass of orange juice, set on a white tablecloth in a dining area on a cruise ship. The background features elegant lighting fixtures and seating, contributing to a sophisticated brunch setting.
Photo: Valorie Austin Tillett

Why not give your sparkling wine a fruity twist and enjoy a delicious mimosa? These are a great way to start your day too, if you want a special drink to accompany your breakfast.

7. Purple Rain

A Purple Rain cocktail on an MSC Cruises ship, presented in a tall glass with layers of vibrant purple and red hues, garnished with a lime wedge and served with a green straw. The drink is placed on a woven table, with a reflective background adding to the sleek and stylish presentation.
Photo: Pamela Marie

The Purple Rain is a vibrant cocktail packed with flavour. It’s also quite potent – a mix of grenadine, rum, vodka, schnapps and gin, with blue curacao to give it that purple hue.

8. Mudslide

Two Mudslide cocktails on a cruise ship, topped with intricate chocolate syrup designs and a cherry in the center. The drinks are served in clear glasses with straws, and their reflection can be seen in a mirrored surface nearby, enhancing the visual appeal.
Photo: Emma’s Kitchen

So many people suggested the mudslide – it’s clearly a very popular drink! And it’s not really a surprise considering it’s essentially a booze-filled milkshake. It contains vodka, coffee liqueur and Irish cream, along with cream and chocolate. Definitely something different if you’re sick of all the fruity flavours!

9. Kiss On The Lips & Twilight Zone

Two cocktails on a Carnival cruise ship: "Kiss On The Lips," a yellow and red layered drink, and "Twilight Zone," a blue and white swirled drink. They are served in hurricane glasses with straws, placed on a marble table with Carnival-branded napkins, against a backdrop of a bar area with people socializing and a sign promoting the beverage program.
Photo: Johnte Langley

Two for one in this photo that was taken on a Carnival cruise! A Kiss on the Lips is a blend of peach schnapps and grenadine with frozen mango, while a Twilight Zone is a melon-based cocktail containing rum, coconut and blue curacao along with melon liqueur.

10. Mojito

A mojito cocktail in a stemmed glass filled with mint leaves and lime wedges, placed next to an empty tall glass with a straw on a green table aboard a cruise ship. The background features a sunny deck area with passengers and scenic views of mountains and the ocean.
Photo: Amanda Jane Clowes

Another classic cocktail and one that’s a fantastic refresher for poolside or after you’ve eaten. A mojito is a mix of white rum, sugar, lime juice, soda water and the key ingredient mint, giving you a drink with plenty of zing.

11. Pimms & Lemonade

Two glasses of Pimm's and lemonade with lemon slices and straws, placed on a round white table with plates of scones topped with clotted cream and jam. The setting is a cozy lounge area on a cruise ship, with a world atlas and informational pamphlets on a shelf in the background.
Photo: Alison Claire Amor

Technically this is considered a cocktail, even though it’s just a mix of Pimms (a fruity, gin-based spirit) and lemonade along with some fruit and cucmber. It’s a very British drink as epitomised by this photo showing it enjoyed with scones!

12. Sunset Martini

A Sunset Martini on a cruise ship, presented in a classic martini glass with a gradient of orange to red, mimicking a sunset. The drink is placed on a bar counter with a sophisticated lounge atmosphere in the background, featuring elegant lighting and patrons enjoying their evening.
Photo: Ashley Dobratz

Where better to get a Martini than the Martini Bar on a Celebrity Cruises ship? A Sunset Martini contains gin, peach schnapps, and then a mix of pineapple and cranberry juices. Very sophisticated, but also delicious.

13. Cucumber Sunrise

A Cucumber Sunrise cocktail on Carnival Cruise Line, featuring a tall glass filled with a yellow drink, ice, and green garnish. The drink is placed on a napkin with the Carnival logo, atop a bar counter with a backdrop of various bottles and bar utensils, creating a vibrant and inviting bar atmosphere.
Photo: Rissa Moye-Cooper

Fresh from the onboard Alchemy Bar on a Carnival cruise, the Cucumber Sunrise is light and tasty, with that perfect blend of being fancy and fun. It contains vodka, watermelon syrup, lime juice and orange juice along with fresh cucumber wheels.

14. Blue Hawaiian

Two Blue Hawaiian cocktails on a cruise ship, served in hurricane glasses and garnished with pineapple slices and cherries. The drinks are placed on a bar counter, with a bartender in a blue uniform in the background, and various bottles and bar equipment visible, creating a lively and tropical bar atmosphere.
Photo: Ferg Jay

A drink that packs plenty of flavour, the Blue Hawaiian is the ideal cruise cocktail – it looks amazing, it’s got a tropical feel and it has quite the boozy kick. It contains tequila and blue curacao, along with frozen lemonade mix and simple syrup for a pleasant, but not too overpowering sweetness.

15. Frozen Watermelon Margarita

A Frozen Watermelon Margarita on a cruise ship, served in a hurricane glass with a lime wedge garnish and a straw. The drink is placed on a bar counter, with a bartender preparing drinks in the background, creating a refreshing and tropical setting for enjoying this pink slushy cocktail.
Photo: Carol Bali Olivieri

It’s not clear where this particular cocktail picture was found, but you can get frozen watermelon margaritas from the Lime & Coconut bars on Royal Caribbean ships, so it could be there. While the recipe hasn’t been published, they do use a watermelon syrup that would pair well with their regular tequila and sour mix.

16. Pink Gin Spritz

A Pink Gin Spritz on a P&O cruise ship, served in a large wine glass with ice, lemon slices, raspberries, and a mint sprig, complete with a straw. The drink is placed on a bar counter, with a blue menu and a well-stocked bar in the background, providing an elegant and inviting atmosphere for enjoying this refreshing cocktail.
Photo: Anna Rowe

Pink gin, prosecco and lemonade – three simple ingredients that make up this delightfully light and flavourful cocktail that you can find on P&O’s ships in the Anderson’s Bar and other venues.

17. Frozen 24K Golden Margarita

A Frozen 24K Golden Margarita on a Princess cruise ship, served in a wide-rimmed glass with a mound of yellow slush. The drink is placed on a woven table, capturing a sunny, outdoor setting with blurred background elements, including a "Wet Floor" sign and other passengers, creating a refreshing and luxurious atmosphere.
Photo: Paula Rorie

This is a beautiful drink option from Princess Cruises if you’re someone who enjoys a beverage that looks as good as it tastes. It’s also available on the rocks, if you don’t want the frozen version. It contains a blend of tequilas along with grand mariner, lime juice and simple syrup.

18. Rum Swizzle

A Rum Swizzle cocktail in a clear plastic cup with the Norwegian Cruise Line logo, placed on a ledge overlooking the ocean. The background features the expansive sea and sky, creating a serene and relaxing ambiance typical of a cruise experience.
Photo: Chuck Hanegan

While Norwegian Cruise Line’s Rum Swizzle loses some of that visual appeal when in a plastic cup, it’s still a great flavour. Often referred to as Bermuda’s national drink, it’s a blend of different rums mixed with falernum, a liqueur, along with orange and pineapple juices.

19. Mermaid Mimosa

A Mermaid Mimosa on the Sky Princess cruise ship, served in a tall champagne flute with a gradient from red to orange. The drink is set on a deck table with a sunny blue sky and part of the ship's railing and deck area in the background, creating a bright and relaxing ambiance perfect for a day at sea.
Photo: Lynne & Paul (Travel With Us)

Available on Princess cruises, this is another beautifully simple cocktail that is packed with amazing flavour. It’s a mimosa that uses quality Champagne along with a blend of orange and peach juices, wonderfully refreshing whatever time of the day you want to try it.

20. Coco Loco

A Coco Loco cocktail on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, served in a hurricane glass and garnished with a pineapple slice and cherry. The creamy, peach-colored drink is set against a bright yellow surface, with a bar area in the background, creating a vibrant and tropical atmosphere.
Photo: Tara Wilkinson

A very refreshing cocktail that you can enjoy on many Royal Caribbean ships, the Coco Loco is packed with fruity flavours. It’s a mix of dark rum and coconut rum, along with extra coconut cream and grenadine.

The fruit flavours are a mix of orange juice concentrate, pineapple juice concentrate and papaya juice concentrate – if you’re British, think a coconut-y, boozy Um Bongo!

21. Singapore Sling

A Singapore Sling cocktail on a cruise ship, served in a tall glass garnished with a pineapple slice and accompanied by a martini glass with a pink drink. The drinks are placed on a white table next to a potted plant, with a cozy seating area in the background, creating a sophisticated and relaxed ambiance.
Photo: Andrew Sassoli-Walker

A Singapore Sling is an iconic cocktail, one you need to try if you do ever visit Singapore, but it’s also available on various cruise lines. It’s a complex blend of flavours, containing gin, cherry brandy, benedictine, bitters, pineapple and lime juices, and it’s the height of sophistication.

22. Bushwacker

A Bushwacker cocktail in a clear plastic cup with the Norwegian Cruise Line logo, featuring a swirl of chocolate syrup. The drink is set on a table with a pool deck in the background, capturing a sunny day at sea with passengers relaxing and enjoying the cruise amenities.
Photo: J.D. Ortiz

Similar to a mudslide, this frozen chocolate-based cocktail originated in the US Virgin Islands. It contains a selection of liqueurs – Irish cream, coffee, almond and chocolate – as well as a blend of vodka and rum, with cream of coconut to top it up.

Final Word

There you have it – some amazing drinks there that I’m sure have you wishing you were on a cruise with one of these in front of you.

Of course, it’s always worth considering a drinks package if you want to try a range of different cocktails and drinks onboard, and my drinks package calculator will let you know whether it’s good value for your cruise.

The 16 Craziest Stories From Cruises

Each year, somewhere between 30 and 35 million people go on a cruise.

Shocking cruise stories

The vast majority of those people are going to have a very typical experience – making great memories, trying new foods, sipping on tropical cocktails and just generally having an amazing time.

But purely based on the odds, some people are going to go through an unusual experience, whether it’s something they do, something that happens to them, or something they witness from other passengers.

And these events can get a little crazy. I found this collection of the craziest stories from cruises and had to pick out the best ones to share with you – some of these really are wild!

Disclaimer: I’ve shared the stories as I found them and so some of the wording might be a little rude.

1. A diamond heist, foiled!

A photorealistic image of a man inside a luxurious jewelry shop, discreetly swallowing a large, glittering diamond. The man, dressed in casual clothing, is shown mid-action with a slightly tense expression, his hand near his mouth as he swallows the diamond. The jewelry shop around him is elegant, with glass display cases showcasing various expensive pieces of jewelry. The lighting in the shop is bright, reflecting off the glass and the jewelry, highlighting the contrast between the man's secretive action and the opulent surroundings.

Lots of cruise ports have jewellery stores around the port area, especially around the Caribbean. And you’ll sometimes hear stories of guests being the victims of harassment or scams, but it’s not so often you see something like this, where the guest is the one trying something (literally) criminal.

The fact they got caught when they got back to the ship – and then had to wait for the diamond to be recovered in the “natural way” must’ve been excruciatingly embarrassing for him. Maybe don’t be a thief.

2. If you’re going to risk this, maybe find somewhere more private…

A photorealistic image of a man sitting at a dimly lit bar, looking suspicious and dodgy as he interacts with his phone. The man is dressed in casual attire, perhaps wearing a hoodie or a jacket, with a wary or secretive expression on his face. His body language is tense, as if he's trying to hide or obscure what he's doing on his phone. The background features a typical bar setting with low lighting, a few patrons in the distance, and a bartender behind the counter.

Drugs aren’t allowed on a cruise, but some people did try to sneak them onboard, especially marijuana. You shouldn’t, but I bet a few people try and get away with it.

However if you’re going to bring cocaine onboard, and somehow you manage to get it past security, maybe consider doing it somewhere more private than from your phone screen while sitting at a bar in view of a crowd.

This guy 100% got booted off the ship, I bet.

3. Taking game shows too far

A photorealistic image of a couple on stage participating in a lively game show. The stage is brightly lit, with colorful lights and a vibrant backdrop that features the game show's logo. The couple, a man and a woman, are standing side by side, looking excited and engaged as they participate in the show. The woman is holding a microphone, and the man is gesturing animatedly. The audience can be seen in the background, cheering them on. The stage is set with various props and game elements that indicate they are in the middle of a fun, interactive challenge.

Even if you’re attending an event on a cruise that’s for adults only, please remember that it doesn’t mean it’s an “adult” show.

These guests clearly got very carried away during their ‘performance’ in the couples gameshow on the ship, but I bet there were plenty of people in the audience who really weren’t impressed.

Do I need to add “Don’t have sex on stage” into my advice I give to new cruisers? I hope not…

4. Violent attack during a show

A photorealistic image of a man in a theater, seated or standing, with a blood on his clothing. The man looks surprised or concerned, with an injury visible onabdomen. The theater environment is dimly lit, with rows of seats visible in the background, and a stage in the distance. The scene suggests that something unexpected has happened, but the focus is on the man's reaction and the setting rather than the injury itself.

Some of the stories on this list are wild in a way that we can laugh at them, but this one’s very serious and scary too.

Fights do break out on cruise ships. They’re rare, and they pretty much always involve alcohol. But it’s normally a fistfight.

How a guest in the main theatre of the ship was so drunk that they wanted to stab someone, and they had a stabbing implement with them, is beyond me. Rumours in the comments suggest it was a broken cocktail class that he used.

Thankfully they were arrested and according to the comments, the passenger recovered fine.

5. Panic and disaster averted

A photorealistic image of a very young girl, around 3 years old, standing in front of an elevator on a cruise ship. The girl is dressed in casual, colorful clothing and is holding a small toy. She looks curious and slightly hesitant as she reaches out to press the elevator button. The elevator doors are partially open, and the setting is a clean, modern building hallway. The scene is well-lit, emphasizing the girl's innocence and the everyday nature of the moment.

This story might not sound very crazy, but think about the implications if that guest hadn’t been there, and hadn’t thought to act. That’s a three-year-old girl who could’ve ended up anywhere on the ship, or worse.

You would hate to think that she could accidentally climb anything and fall over a railing, or that another passenger would wish her harm, but you don’t know.

Young children should always be supervised, and this story could’ve been a lot worse had the customer not had the luck and bravery to be there and handle it.

6. Where’s your name tag?

A photorealistic image of a male piano bar entertainer wearing Australian flag print underwear. The entertainer is seated at a piano in a lively bar setting, with a confident and charismatic expression. The bar is dimly lit with warm lighting, and you can see a small audience in the background, enjoying the performance. The scene captures the playful and relaxed atmosphere of a piano bar, with the entertainer being the focal point.

Crew members are supposed to entertain guests onboard, but they’re also supposed to stick to their jobs in doing so.

A piano bar entertainer is not a stripper, so this crew member deciding to strip down to their underwear was certainly not something they were supposed to include in their act.

The fact that the piano bar was closed the next day does definitely suggest that the entertainer’s contract was terminated. From the comments, it seems as if they’ve landed a successful career with their own venue back in Australia.

7. Stuck onboard for a crazy reason

Imagine waking up to find that your cruise line had gone bankrupt, and that you were now stuck in the Caribbean?

It almost sounds like the stuff dreams are made of, though I can’t imagine the conditions onboard were fantastic when food was limited and the crew were no longer being paid.

Still, the guests did get a refunded fare once they got home from their extended cruise, so it can’t have been all bad. Maybe being stuck in paradise is your idea of the perfect cruise?

It’s still pretty crazy for a cruise line to go bust mid-cruise though. Typically a cruise line would see it coming, and cancel sailings.

8. Woken up to an ice trap

Here’s another tale where guests woke up to an unexpected delay, although this one was more natural in cause and certainly didn’t last as long.

The ship was stranded due to ice flows and literally couldn’t sail out of the port until the afternoon when they’d broken up enough.

That must’ve been some pretty cool sights, suddenly being trapped by ice overnight in every direction. A shame that half the ports were cancelled on the cruise due to weather conditions, but talk about a crazy and memorable experience.

9. The Norovirus ghost cruise

Norovirus is a gastro illness that does sometimes strike cruise ships, and when it does often a lot of people onboard will catch it – not necessarily because of the enclosed environment, but because people are terrible at washing their hands before using the buffet, or sneezing into their elbow.

Anyway, this cruise almost served as a preview of the world during the global shutdown a year later. The guest described walking around what felt like a ghost ship as so many people were quarantined. They enjoyed no lines at the buffet, and the entire adults-only part of the ship to themselves.

I can almost see the appeal – though you certainly wouldn’t want to be on a ship riddled with a virus.

10. When creeps get justice

Another alcohol-fuelled story and this time it was a guest who decided to act on their creepy instincts when drunk, and try to sexually harass a member of the crew.

That sort of behaviour doesn’t tend to go down well with the crew, and the fact he was dragged to his room by 3 or 4 security guys pretty sharpish was probably a lucky outcome for him. Though I can’t imagine they were gentle.

I’m sure they weren’t when the guest tried to bite them too. No wonder he was disembarked the next day and left to make his own way home. What a shame.

11. Excuse me, you’ve something on your leg…

I just… I don’t know where to start with this one.

I’ve heard of kids ruining a pool deck due to bathroom accidents. Pools are sometimes emptied when kids who shouldn’t be in them have an ‘incident’.

But an adult woman walking around a pool deck and dripping something that isn’t pool water… This is one of the most disgusting cruise stories I’ve ever heard. Yikes!

12. Prank creates a false alarm

Kids fight sometimes, and can get a bit stroppy with each other. Or they might just think it’s funny to pull a prank on their siblings, such as throwing their bathing suit off the balcony.

Unfortunately, this time it caught a gust of wind and ended up in the sea, and turned into a bit of an incident when the crew thought someone had gone overboard.

There’s no further detail on how long the false alarm was sustained – you’d hope the kid came clean quickly to let people know what had happened.

But it’s pretty crazy that a pair of shorts could cause such drama.

13. Picking up an unwanted passenger

This story is equally sad and unpleasant, and it’s not the first time I’ve heard of a ship striking a whale carcass.

The fact that this one got stuck to the ship and continued to decompose is not a nice thought. And the person telling the story described the vile stench which I bet was utterly horrific.

Using a tender boat can make you feel a bit sick even at the best of times – throw in rotting whale smell and I’m not surprised a few people were unwell as a result.

14. A not-so-happy marriage

If you’re planning on cheating on your partner on a cruise, maybe don’t get up on stage as part of the Newlywed Game so that other passengers can see who your wife is, and then see you with another woman later and realise you’re misbehaving.

Obviously, don’t cheat. That sucks. But if you’re going to, maybe learn your lesson from this muppet.

Anyway, it didn’t end well for him with a shattered arm. Married life, eh?

15. A dance-off gets heated

One of the tamer stories on the list, but it’s a fun one where a hothead learned a valuable lesson.

If you’re prepared to cut in and dance with someone else’s wife because you think that you’re the centre of attention, don’t be shocked when your wife is invited to dance instead!

The fact he got annoyed and stormed off shows that some people just don’t know how to have fun.

16. Possibly the craziest story of all…

Between on-stage sex acts, diamond theft and other horrible stories, I had to save this shocking and scary one right to the end.

I don’t know how guests coped on this cruise…

I’m joking of course, but I did love how someone replied to a request for the craziest cruise stories with this. And the comments are equally shocked too.

Pizza never runs out on a cruise, right?

Final word

There you go – some of the craziest stories at sea.

Again, there are millions of people who go on cruises each year, so if you’re new to cruising and you’re worried this is what it’s always like, it really isn’t!

But you never know – maybe you’ve witnessed something crazy on a cruise that’s worthy of joining this list? If you have, let me know in the comments!
