The Perfect Cruise Length: Revealed

When it comes to the ideal cruise length, opinions among cruise enthusiasts vary widely.

Some people love a longer cruise, whereas others don’t want to be away from home for too long – understandable, really.

Passengers lounging on deck chairs aboard a Carnival Cruise Line ship, soaking up the sun with the deep blue sea beside them, embodying the relaxation and leisure of a day at sea.

I polled cruisers to see what they thought was the best length of cruise, and then did some analysis on the answers to find the perfect cruise length. Here’s what I found:

Popular Cruise Lengths

7-10 Days: The Sweet Spot

A significant number of cruisers believe that a cruise lasting between 7 and 10 days hits the sweet spot.

A week-long cruise is particularly popular, offering a balanced blend of relaxation and adventure without requiring too much time off work.

A group of guests are enjoying a hot tub on the deck of a Carnival cruise ship. The scene features four people relaxing in the hot tub, smiling and conversing, with the ocean and sky providing a scenic backdrop. Around the deck, other passengers can be seen lounging under red umbrellas, adding to the leisurely atmosphere of the cruise experience.

One cruiser mentioned that seven days provide just the right amount of time to unwind and explore a few ports without feeling rushed.

If you can extend this to ten days, that tends to allow for a slightly more leisurely pace, accommodating additional destinations or more sea days for relaxation. But you also aren’t having to worry too much about booking holidays at work, or getting pet care.

Cruise passengers are enjoying a sunny day at CoCo Cay beach. A couple relaxes on lounge chairs under a large orange and white umbrella, with a refreshing drink in hand. In the background, families and other beachgoers play in the clear blue water, walk along the sandy shore, and use hammocks strung between posts. The tropical setting includes palm trees and thatched umbrellas, creating a picturesque vacation scene.

Overall, 7 nights was the most popular answer for the perfect cruise length, taking everything into account around personal responsibilities and missing home.

10-14 Days: A Thorough Escape

Cruises lasting between 10 and 14 days are still highly favoured by many cruisers.

A lot of people believe that two weeks offer the best chance to really enjoy both the ship’s amenities and the various ports of call, especially on bigger ships.

The bustling atmosphere at Port Zante in St. Kitts, with two large cruise ships moored at the terminal. The perspective shows passengers walking along the dock, enjoying the sunny Caribbean weather as they possibly prepare to explore the island or return to the ships after a day out. The ships are impressive in scale, dominating the background, while the foreground features people of various ages in casual vacation attire, emphasizing the tourist-friendly environment. The inclusion of vibrant greenery in a large circular planter adds a touch of the island’s lush natural beauty, contrasting nicely with the industrial elements of the port. This scene effectively portrays Port Zante as a key entry point for visitors to St. Kitts, serving as a gateway to the island's rich culture and scenic landscapes.

Some of the largest ships in the world have over 20 dining venues, or a wide mix of activities to try onboard. If you only cruise for a week, you’ll barely scratch the surface of what the ship has to offer, especially if you’re spending lots of time ashore.

A woman is surfing on the FlowRider aboard Anthem of the Seas, enjoying the onboard wave simulator. She is balancing on the artificial wave while the ship sails through the open ocean, leaving a trail of white wake behind. The scene is set under a bright blue sky with scattered clouds, creating a thrilling and picturesque moment of adventure on the cruise ship.

One cruiser pointed out that a 14-day cruise provides a substantial break from everyday life, allowing for a more immersive experience without the need to rush through activities or excursions.

14+ Days: For the True Enthusiasts

For those with the luxury of time and flexibility, cruises of two weeks or more are seen as ideal, and a lot of people said they would like to cruise longer if they could.

Enthusiasts of these longer voyages appreciate the extended relaxation and the chance to delve deeper into each destination. You get more time to properly unwind and you aren’t feeling like you’re torn between spending time ashore and on the ship – you have the chance to do both.

Cunard guests are enjoying drinks on the deck of a cruise ship in Alaska. The group, dressed in stylish attire, is seated on comfortable outdoor furniture with a scenic backdrop of lush green mountains. A waiter is serving cocktails, adding to the luxurious and relaxed atmosphere of the moment.

One cruiser suggested that while 14 days is a great length, cruises extending up to 21 days or even more can be truly fulfilling.

Another noted that their longest cruise was 35 days, which included several itineraries back-to-back, allowing for a seamless and varied travel experience.

A man and woman are swinging on large wooden swings set in the shallow waters of Great Stirrup Cay. The swings are suspended from a wooden frame with a sign that reads "Great Stirrup Cay." The serene beach scene in the background features palm trees, cabanas, and a clear blue sky, creating a perfect tropical getaway ambiance.

There were a few comments from people who loved world cruises too, which often last much longer, but most people can’t afford a world cruise, or just don’t have the freedom.

Suggested read: How Much A World Cruise Costs

You’d start to miss home, too, and some of the comforts. Cruise ships can’t provide everything, so even things like grapes or strawberries, or your favourite butter from home, might be calling to you if you’re gone too long.

Shorter Cruises: Quick Getaways

While longer cruises are a dream for many, shorter cruises ranging from 3 to 7 days still have their charm, especially for those new to cruising or looking for a brief escape.

One commenter mentioned that four to five days are ideal for a quick getaway, perfect for a refreshing break without committing to a lengthy trip.

A woman in shorts and a tank top leans against the railing of a cruise ship balcony, gazing out at the vast ocean. The scene is framed by the circular opening of the balcony, with two empty chairs nearby, creating a peaceful and contemplative atmosphere as she enjoys the serene view.

These shorter cruises can also be a good introduction for first-time cruisers, providing a taste of the cruising life without the pressure of a long-term commitment.

The downside to shorter cruises is that you still need to spend the time and money to get to the ship and back, and so it can feel like a lot of effort for only a short break.

Cruise ship passengers are disembarking at a port in Sydney, with the iconic Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge visible in the background. The scene is bustling with people walking along the waterfront promenade, lined with palm trees and flags. The large cruise ship, adorned with a Union Jack design on its bow, is docked, creating a vibrant and picturesque setting.

You might also feel like you’ve only just started your holiday and suddenly it’s time to disembark.

A short cruise is good every now and then, but if you can extend it to a week, it’ll be even sweeter.

Factors Influencing Preferences

There are several different factors that influence people’s decisions on the ideal cruise length – it’s something that cruisers really think about!

Travel Companions

Families with young children or elderly parents often prefer cruises lasting between 7 and 11 days.

This duration strikes a balance, ensuring everyone has a good time without anyone getting too tired or overwhelmed. Being away from home for a long time can be tough on certain ages.

Cruise Mummy and her family smiling for a photo in front of a docked cruise ship. The background features scenic mountains and a calm body of water, creating a picturesque setting. Cruise Mummy wears sunglasses on her head, the daughter is in a shiny pink jacket, the father is in a dark jacket, and the son is in a gray jacket with batman logos, all dressed warmly for the cool weather.

Also if you’re travelling with family, you might get a bit sick of each other on a cruise ship, especially in smaller cabins. You’ll miss having your own spaces at home where you can decompress and enjoy a bit of solitude in comfort!

So, who you’re travelling with definitely has a big part to play in the ideal cruise length.

Itinerary and Destinations

The nature of the cruise itinerary also plays a crucial role. Cruises with a mix of sea days and port visits tend to be more popular, as they offer a good blend of relaxation and exploration.

One cruiser highlighted that a 7-night Southern Caribbean cruise with stops at places like San Juan, St. Maarten, and Barbados was perfect due to its well-planned itinerary.

The Ambience cruise ship is docked at a port in Barbados, under a clear blue sky. The foreground features large, colorful letters spelling "BARBADOS," decorated with tropical designs. The scene captures the vibrant and welcoming atmosphere of the Caribbean island.

But if you’re cruising from the UK, you might feel like a 7-night cruise isn’t long enough if you want to visit the Med. You’ll barely make it to Barcelona if you’re lucky before your ship has to turn around.

If you want to sail to the Med you’ll either need a two-week cruise, or a fly-cruise that gets you into the heart of the destination sooner.

Personal Lifestyle and Financial Considerations

Some cruise fans noted that their ideal cruise length would be longer if not for work commitments or financial constraints. They would want to cruise a longer itinerary if they could, but their job, their pets or their bank balance stops them.

One respondent said that they would love to cruise for 14 to 20 days but settled for 7-8 days due to these limitations. And that’s understandable.

You want to enjoy your cruise, but not at the risk of putting yourself in tons of debt or causing other problems that you need to go back to.

If you’re on a typical family holiday budget, a 1-2 week cruise is plenty and you can just buy the occasional lottery ticket if you want, to hopefully make that months-long world cruise dream a reality!

cruise port

Experience and Enjoyment

There’s a common sentiment among seasoned cruisers that no cruise can be too long.

Several comments reflected a desire for never-ending cruises, which shows you just how much they value the enjoyment and relaxation found in extended sea travel.

One cruiser even mentioned plans to retire on a residential cruise ship, cruising 200+ nights a year.

If you didn’t have strong ties at home, then it would be pretty amazing to sail around the world all the time, seeing the many cultures and attractions whilst being properly looked after by the hardworking crew.

A group of cruise guests is relaxing at the Serenity area on Carnival's Mardi Gras. Three women in swimsuits are seated on a striped couch and at a nearby table, engaged in conversation and enjoying drinks. In the background, a serene pool area with blue tiles and deck chairs is visible, along with an upper deck featuring cabanas and potted plants, creating a tranquil and luxurious ambiance.

But home life is fun too, and so a lot of people might say they wish they could cruise for months on end, but in reality prefer something shorter.

After all, it gives you something to look forward to. Part of the fun is planning your cruise, or daydreaming about your upcoming getaway while you’re working.

NEW DEALS JUST RELEASED!

Don’t miss these hot cruise offers…

In Summary

While there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, the general consensus among cruise enthusiasts seems to lean towards 7 to 10 days as the ideal cruise length.

This duration offers a perfect balance between experiencing life on the ship, exploring various destinations, and getting a proper break from daily routines.

However, if circumstances allow, many would happily extend their cruises to two weeks or more, which shows you just how much love and passion many have for this type of holiday.

So, whether you’re a seasoned cruiser planning your next long voyage or a newcomer looking for a quick taste of cruising life, there’s a perfect cruise length out there for you, and my guide on choosing a cruise in 7 steps will help.

What Are the Prices of Royal Caribbean Drink Packages?

When planning your Royal Caribbean cruise, it’s important to consider the prices of the drink packages available. These packages can provide excellent value for those who plan on enjoying a variety of beverages throughout their trip. Below, you’ll find the current pricing for Royal Caribbean drink packages in 2023:

The Deluxe Beverage Package, which includes a wide selection of alcoholic beverages, ranges in price from $63 to $98 per day. At Bionic Bar®, meet two robotic bartenders who know how to shake, stir, and mix up your night out. With moves as fluid as the Pimm’s in your cup, these mecha mixologists can create an almost endless combination of cocktails, from classic cosmos to custom-crafted sips designed by you.

When planning a Royal Caribbean cruise, one important consideration is whether or not to purchase a drink package. As an avid cruiser and a lover of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, I’ve often pondered this question myself. To help you make an informed decision, let’s explore the value of a Royal Caribbean drink package and whether it’s worth the investment.

Firstly, it’s essential to assess your drinking habits and preferences. If you enjoy indulging in a variety of cocktails, beers, wines, and non-alcoholic beverages throughout your cruise, a drink package can offer significant savings. Paying individually for each drink can quickly add up, whereas a drink package provides a fixed cost for unlimited options.

Additionally, a drink package allows you to try new and exciting beverages without worrying about the price. It enhances your onboard experience, allowing you to savor your favorite drinks and discover new favorites without hesitation. Whether you’re lounging by the pool, enjoying a show, or dining at one of the many specialty restaurants, a drink package ensures that you can enjoy your favorite libations anytime, anywhere.

However, it’s crucial to evaluate your individual needs and calculate the costs. Consider the duration of your cruise, the number of sea days versus port days, and the overall value you anticipate getting from the package. If you’re not a frequent drinker or prefer to have only a few beverages during your trip, it might be more cost-effective to pay for drinks individually.

In conclusion, a Royal Caribbean drink package can be worth it if you enjoy a wide variety of beverages and want the convenience of unlimited drinks throughout your cruise. It ensures hassle-free enjoyment and can provide significant savings compared to paying for each drink separately. Nevertheless, it’s important to assess your drinking habits and do the math to determine if a drink package aligns with your budget and preferences. Cheers to finding the perfect option for your Royal Caribbean adventure!

Major Plumbing Issue Greets Guests On Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship

Guests embarking on a cruise on Royal Caribbean’s Voyager of the Seas were greeted by a major plumbing issue with no running water onboard.

According to a guest who posted on Reddit, this meant that no sinks were available for hand-washing, and none of the toilets were able to flush.

The ship is in Piraeus, the port near Athens, with guests arriving for a 7-day trip around the Greek Isles.

The guest said that they first tried the buffet and found that the drinks machines were dispensing pure syrup, and because no notices had been posted anywhere, they assumed it was just a drinks issue.

But then, on visiting the bathrooms, they found that the toilets weren’t flushing and the taps in the sink weren’t working, with no hand sanitiser available in the bathrooms either.

The guest spoke to the Guest Services team who confirmed it was a ship-wide issue, and that repairs would take at least another hour, having already been without water for two hours.

I’ll update once I know more, especially if the repairs take longer than planned!

6 Activities on Cruise Ships You Can’t Do Anymore

While many aspects of cruising have remained the same over the past few decades, there are a number of activities what were common place on cruise ships many years ago that are no longer allowed (for various reasons).  Here are six few activities that you can no longer participate in while on a cruise.

Our free cruise newsletter offers the latest news and deals: Sign Up

cruise ships in Miami

1. Messages in a bottle – Passengers would write a message along with their name and address, put it into a bottle and toss it into the sea. They were hoping that someone on a distant shore would reply back after finding the bottle. Many passengers never heard back, but some received a nice surprise in the mail months after their cruise.

Cruise lines ended this practice more than 20 years ago as you can no longer throw anything into the ocean.

2. Skeet shooting – Passengers were once able to practice their skeet shooting off the back of the ship for $1 a shot.  Skeet shooting on cruise ships was stopped a couple decades ago.

Thanks to the video below that was posted on YouTube, we can get a look at this now banned activity that took place on Carnival Ecstasy in 1991.

3. Streamers at sailaway – Common place in the 70’s and 80’s, passengers would throw streamers and confetti over the side of the ship as they celebrated sailaway, waving to their family and friends on the dock.

This fun celebration was featured in many episodes of the hit TV show The Love Boat. Sound like a lot of fun? It was, but the practice of throwing anything overboard is obviously no longer allowed.

4. Hitting golf balls into the ocean – Passengers were once allowed to practice their drives by hitting golf balls off of the ship and into the ocean.

The practice was stopped in 1990 after the International Maritime Organization passed a law outlawing the dumping of plastic waste into the sea. Golf simulators were added to some ships while a few luxury ships, switched to biodegradable golf balls made of fish food.

The A-Team filmed an episode in 1985 (Season 4, Episode 2) on Carnival Cruise Line’s M.S. Tropicale and in one scene, you can see a passenger hitting golf balls off of the aft of the ship.

5. Smoking in the dining rooms and staterooms – Just a few years ago, passengers were able to not only smoke on their balconies, but also in their staterooms.  Now, all cruise lines have now ended this practice and every stateroom and balcony are smoke-free zones.

Passengers smoking in the ship’s dining rooms has been outlawed for even longer, with some cruise lines making the change as early 1990s. Smoking is currently prohibited in all enclosed dining venues on cruise ships.

balcony on cruise ship

6. Visits from friends and family on embarkation day – Years ago, family and friends of passengers were able to board the ship on embarkation day to not only wish their loved ones a bon voyage, but to also get a taste of the on board experience. Tighter security measures ended this practice over 20 years ago.

In 2010, Princess Cruises launched a “Bon Voyage Experience” where friends and family can come aboard for up to 4 hours on embarkation day.  The cost was $39 per person and included a four-course lunch in the dining room, a guided ship tour, and a souvenir photo. The program was limited to 50 guests on each embarkation day and the cost could be applied towards a future cruise with Princess.

Princess Cruises ended this program in 2019.

5 Cruise Lines Will Have Ships 200,000 Gross Tons or Larger by 2030

It’s no secret that cruise ships continue to get larger and larger, especially from the mainstream cruise lines.

Royal Caribbean was the first cruise line to ever build a ship over 200,000 gross tons in size when Oasis of the Seas debuted in 2009.

It wasn’t until 13 years later when a second cruise line, MSC Cruises, launched a ship over 200k in 2022.

There are currently eight ships in service over this size. They are:

  • Oasis of the Seas
  • Allure of the Seas
  • Harmony of the Seas
  • Symphony of the Seas
  • Wonder of the Seas
  • MSC World Europa
  • Icon of the Seas
  • Utopia of the Seas

Note: Gross tons is a measurement of a ship’s overall internal volume and has nothing to do with weight.

By the time 2030 rolls around, five cruise lines will have ships larger than 200,000 gross tons.  They are Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line and Norwegian Cruise Line. Here is a look at these future ships.

Royal Caribbean has three more mega cruise ships coming out, two more Icon Class and another Oasis class.  By 2028, Royal Caribbean will have 10 cruise ships over 200,000 gross tons in their fleet.

MSC World America will debut in 2025, MSC World Asia in 2026, and one unnamed ship in 2027. They will be around 205,000 gross tons in size.

Disney Cruise Line will add one mega ship to their fleet when Disney Adventure debuts in 2025.  This 208,000 gross ton ship was originally the first of two Global class ships from Star Cruises.

Artist rendering of Disney Adventure

After the cruise line filed for bankruptcy, the ship which only partially finished was sold to Disney and renamed Disney Adventure. The second ship was sold for scrap since it was still early in the vessel’s construction.

Carnival Cruise Line, the first cruise line to ever have a ship over 100,000 gross tons, will add three mega ships starting in 2029.

This new class from Carnival will be 230,000 gross tons in size with a ship coming out every two years after the first in 2029.

We currently have zero details on this new class from Carnival.

The fifth cruise line adding a mega ship by the end of the decade is Norwegian Cruise Line. NCL has four 200,000 gross ton ships on order and they are currently scheduled to debut in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036.

Norwegian Cruise Line has not given any more details about this new class of ships.

There have been some ship prototypes that dwarf these current ships.  One was a 430,000 gross ton ship that will likely never be built. Another was a mile-long Freedom ship that was more of a pipedream than reality.

Massage Therapy — A Tune-Up For Cruise Travelers

The best and most interesting parts of the globe are often just a few kilometers from our homes, businesses, and native countries. Traveling this far for holidays, conferences, or simply as a tourist is exciting and fun. However, our cruise travel experiences are also associated with some difficulties. You need to select, prepare, pack, and unpack your bag. Even if you go on a vacation for 2-3 days, you still need to spend a lot of time and resources to get ready for the trip. This is no fun and can even stress some people.

Massage Therapy

The good news is that you can make your vacation experience more pleasant and smoother. All you need to do is relax before and after your trip to your travel agenda. Therapy with a Moroccan bath can also be a good alternative. The treatment may help you cope with stress and worry while also reviving and healing your whole body from weariness or chronic pain. It is up to you what treatment to choose. Therapeutic, Swedish, deep tissue, hot-stone, or even sports massages can be a good solution. So, let us share a couple of facts proving the core benefits of massage treatments to your unforgettable travel experience.

1. Reduce Stress During Your Cruise Trip

Traveling is usually exciting, but it also comes with certain issues to solve. Some of the main drawbacks are trip preparations, packing a bag, and the inconvenience experienced on board to mention a few. Massage treatment may reduce stress and soothe your mind and body after a long journey.

2. Eliminate Back Pain

Sitting for lengthy periods of time creates back pain, which is uncomfortable for the body. A decent massage may help relieve back discomfort and provide relaxation even after travel.

Traveling for extended periods of time may have a negative impact on both your physical and mental health. However, receiving a decent massage treatment may help mitigate the effects of changing time zones by sensitizing blood flow and lowering stored tension in the body.

3. Get Rid of Body Aches

Massage treatment helps to revitalize and relieve bodily pains, which are common after spending multiple hours in a car or on a cruise ship. Massage treatment reduces muscular stiffness and promotes healthy blood circulation.

4. Promote Healthy Sleep

A professionally performed massage treatment will relieve bodily pains and aches gathered throughout the journey preparation procedure. This promotes good sleep and removes irritants.

5. Promote Calmness

A therapeutic massage stimulates the brain chemical that causes good sensations, allowing you to enjoy nature’s exquisite work and making your cruise trip truly unforgettable. After the treatment session, you will be fresh and full of energy to explore the new world.

6. Reduce Stress

Studies have shown that receiving a massage helps lower your cortisol levels. Cortisol is the hormone involved with the fight reaction; when the body perceives a frightening situation, it raises the cortisol level in your system. Cortisol puts your body on alert, allowing it to react quickly to any perceived threat — a sensation we associate with stress. Lowering your cortisol levels helps your body and mind to relax, making you feel much more tranquil.

7. Relieve Headache

One of the leading reasons for headaches is a lack of blood circulation to the brain. Massaging the neck and head may almost magically relieve these headaches by triggering blood flow. When the blood flow to the brain returns to normal, the headache goes away, and you’re ready to tackle the remainder of the day with a grin.

8. Get in a Better Mood

According to studies, a massage is likely to raise serotonin levels in your brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter associated with happiness. As a result, your mood will be much improved after your massage therapy.

Bring Your Travel Experience to a New Level

Getting a massage during your vacation comes with multiple advantages: it makes you feel relaxed and free, and it may work as a pain reliever if necessary. From relaxation to recovery and all in between, a massage may help you achieve the condition of body and mind you seek — and it does so without the use of any steroids or medications.
