New Gastrointestinal Illness Cases Reported Aboard Ruby Princess After Major Norovirus Outbreak

Additional cases of gastrointestinal illness have been reported aboard Princess Cruises’ Ruby Princess only days after the ship experienced a significant norovirus outbreak that affected more than 120 people.

The latest reports indicate that six crew members and one passenger are currently experiencing symptoms while the ship continues its 10-night Alaska cruise. According to the Juneau Independent, all seven individuals were following onboard isolation protocols as of Sunday, 5th July 2026.

Ruby Princess in Alaska

The new illnesses come after Ruby Princess recently recorded 125 gastrointestinal cases during its previous voyage, including 102 guests and 23 crew members. That outbreak exceeded the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s reporting threshold, prompting an official investigation through the agency’s Vessel Sanitation Program.

The current number of reported cases is considerably lower. With capacity for 3,080 passengers and around 1,100 crew members, the seven active cases represent approximately 0.17% of everyone onboard, far below the CDC’s requirement that outbreaks affecting at least 3% of passengers or crew must be formally reported.

As a result, no new CDC outbreak report has been issued.

Enhanced Health Measures Continue

Although the latest illnesses do not meet federal reporting requirements, Princess Cruises is expected to continue enhanced sanitation procedures introduced after the previous outbreak.

These measures typically include intensified cleaning of public spaces, frequent disinfection of high-touch surfaces, encouraging passengers to wash their hands regularly and isolating anyone displaying gastrointestinal symptoms to help reduce further transmission.

Ruby Princess departed San Francisco on 2nd July after embarkation was briefly delayed to allow additional deep cleaning following the previous voyage.

Despite the latest illnesses, the cruise has continued without disruption. The ship called at Sitka on 5th July and Haines on 6th July as scheduled. Scenic glacier cruising, along with visits to Ketchikan and Prince Rupert, remain on the itinerary before the vessel returns to San Francisco on 12th July.

Consecutive Illness Cases Can Occur On Cruise Ships

Seeing gastrointestinal illness reported on consecutive sailings is not uncommon, even after extensive cleaning procedures have been completed.

According to the CDC, people infected with norovirus can continue spreading the virus for several days after their symptoms disappear. The agency states: “you are most contagious when you have symptoms of norovirus illness or during the few days after you feel better.”

Virus on a cruise ship

It is also possible that illness cases on separate voyages are unrelated. Norovirus is widespread in the wider community, with the CDC estimating that around 2,500 outbreaks are reported across the United States each year.

Other cruise ships have experienced similar patterns in recent years. Royal Caribbean’s Enchantment of the Seas recorded outbreaks on back-to-back sailings during March 2023, with a combined 272 reported cases.

More recently, Holland America Line’s Rotterdam reported gastrointestinal outbreaks on two separate voyages during February and March 2025, totalling 278 reported illnesses. While those cruises were separated by two weeks, health officials noted it was possible lower-level cases occurred on intervening sailings without reaching the CDC’s reporting threshold.

More recently still, Lindblad Expeditions’ National Geographic Sea Bird also reported gastrointestinal illness across multiple consecutive voyages, although only two sailings exceeded the threshold required for formal CDC reporting.

Former Headteacher Banned After Changing School Term Dates To Fit Around Cruise Holiday

A former headteacher has been banned from teaching after a professional conduct panel concluded she dishonestly changed her school’s term dates to accommodate a cruise holiday, while also misusing a school-funded vehicle for personal trips, including a family holiday to France.

Joy Ballard, the former headteacher of Ryde Academy on the Isle of Wight, was found to have engaged in unacceptable professional conduct and conduct that brought the teaching profession into disrepute following a Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) hearing.

Joy Ballard Cruise Headteacher

The panel concluded that Ballard acted dishonestly by altering the school’s 2023-24 term dates to fit around her personal travel plans. It also found she repeatedly used a school-funded vehicle for private journeys, including commuting to work and taking the Peugeot 5008 on a family holiday to France.

As a result, the Secretary of State for Education has imposed a prohibition order preventing Ballard from teaching in schools, sixth forms, youth accommodation and children’s homes in England. She will be able to apply for the order to be reviewed after two years.

The misconduct findings followed a lengthy investigation into her leadership at Ryde Academy, where concerns first emerged in March 2024. Ballard retired from the school in August 2024 before the case was referred to the Teaching Regulation Agency.

The panel found Ballard had admitted all of the allegations before the hearing, including that her conduct amounted to unacceptable professional conduct and behaviour that could bring the profession into disrepute.

Changed School Calendar To Fit Cruise

One of the most serious findings centred on changes to the academy’s term dates during the 2023-24 academic year.

Evidence presented to the panel showed the autumn term was extended until Monday 18th December 2023, while the start of the spring term was delayed until Wednesday 3rd January 2024.

The panel concluded those changes were made so Ballard could complete a cruise holiday that did not return until 3rd January.

Majestic view of a cruise ship's bow as it cuts through the blue waters of the ocean under a bright, cloudy sky, showcasing the grandeur and scale of oceanic travel.

Witnesses told the hearing Ballard had openly discussed changing the calendar because of her holiday, while the panel also heard evidence that she had joked about the decision during a staff meeting.

The report found the revised calendar created what witnesses described as a “Bitsa week”, with pupils expected to return for just a single Monday before the Christmas break. Evidence from senior staff suggested attendance suffered as many families chose to begin their holidays early, with the panel hearing the school never fully recovered from the decline in attendance that followed.

The panel ultimately concluded Ballard had altered the dates to accommodate her personal travel arrangements, describing the decision as dishonest and lacking integrity.

The report also found she was not present at school for the full day on 3rd January 2024 because she was returning from the cruise. The hearing accepted evidence that she arrived after the school day had already begun, meaning she was unable to fulfil her responsibilities as headteacher on the first day of the new term.

The panel ruled that absence also demonstrated a lack of integrity because she had knowingly booked a holiday that prevented her from being at school for the start of term.

School Car Used For France Holiday

The investigation also examined Ballard’s use of a Peugeot 5008 purchased using school funds.

The vehicle had been approved to reduce the cost of transporting pupils to alternative education provision across the Isle of Wight, replacing expensive taxi journeys.

Instead, the panel found Ballard regularly used the car for personal journeys over a two-year period, commuting to work, driving it at weekends and evenings, and taking it on a family holiday to France during Easter 2024.

Evidence included ferry booking records showing the vehicle’s registration was used for a crossing from Portsmouth to Caen, while investigators also found photographs of the car displaying the required UK identification sticker and headlight adaptors following the overseas trip.

The panel noted Ballard initially denied taking the vehicle abroad during the school’s internal investigation before later admitting it had been used for the journey.

Witnesses also described frequently seeing what became known around the school as “Joy’s car” parked outside her home and at public houses.

When the vehicle was eventually returned to the academy it had covered around 22,000 miles. The panel concluded that figure was difficult to reconcile with its intended purpose of transporting pupils on the Isle of Wight.

Although Ballard argued she believed she was permitted to use the vehicle personally, the panel rejected that explanation, pointing to trust policies stating school assets should not be used for personal benefit except in very limited circumstances.

The investigation also examined several purchases made using school funds, including camping equipment, a karaoke machine and televisions.

The panel accepted that each item had originally been bought with school-related intentions. However, it concluded they ultimately delivered limited benefit to pupils because they were either poorly planned or never properly utilised.

Camping equipment, including tents and inflatable mattresses, had been purchased for what Ballard said would become outdoor learning experiences and activities for pupils.

However, the hearing found there had been no clear plan for how the equipment would be used. Ballard herself later described the project as “a disaster” and “a waste of taxpayer’s money”.

Similarly, a karaoke machine purchased using the school’s rewards budget was found to have seen little use after it arrived, while two televisions bought as part of a school gym project were eventually raffled off after never being installed.

Joy Ballard Sacked Headteacher Cruise

Although the panel criticised those spending decisions, it stopped short of finding they had been dishonest, concluding instead that they represented poor financial judgement rather than purchases made for personal gain.

The hearing also found Ballard failed to follow the academy trust’s procedures for handling cash collected at school events and fundraising activities.

Evidence showed money was sometimes stored in her handbag rather than the school safe, while banking procedures were not consistently followed.

The panel described the arrangements as chaotic and said they created unnecessary suspicion among colleagues, although it did not conclude Ballard had personally benefited financially.

‘Not A Rule Follower’

During the hearing, Ballard accepted responsibility for using the school vehicle for personal purposes but maintained that, aside from that issue, she would not have acted differently.

She told the panel: “I am not a rule follower, I like going against the grain to benefit the kids.”

The former headteacher also received extensive support from former colleagues, pupils and parents.

Around 50 character references praised her leadership and commitment to disadvantaged children, while witnesses described her as an inspirational leader who had transformed schools and changed young people’s lives.

The panel acknowledged Ballard’s achievements throughout her career.

It noted that Ryde Academy achieved Good Ofsted ratings during her leadership after previously being judged to require improvement or be inadequate. The hearing also recognised her work on the Channel 4 documentary Educating Cardiff while leading Willows High School, along with her Pearson Teaching Award and evidence that she had improved attendance, GCSE results and pupil numbers during her career.

Despite those accomplishments, the panel concluded they did not outweigh the seriousness of the misconduct.

It found Ballard had repeatedly placed her own interests ahead of her professional responsibilities by using school resources for personal benefit and changing the school calendar to accommodate a private holiday.

The report also concluded that parents and the wider public would find the behaviour concerning if they became aware that a headteacher had used their position in that way.

In its decision, the Secretary of State said: “The findings of misconduct are serious as they include a headteacher behaving in a way which was dishonest and lacking in integrity.”

Although the panel accepted Ballard remained a capable educator who had made a significant contribution to education over many years, it determined that maintaining public confidence in the profession required a prohibition order.

The teaching ban takes immediate effect, although Ballard can apply for the order to be reviewed after two years.

Former Virgin Voyages Crew Member Charged Over Alleged Sexual Assaults On Brilliant Lady

A former Virgin Voyages crew member has been charged in the United States after allegedly sexually assaulting female passengers while working aboard Brilliant Lady during an Alaska cruise.

Pranit Narayan Pawar, 26, an Indian national employed as a hairstylist on the adults-only cruise ship, is accused of using unauthorised “complimentary” massages as a way to isolate guests before allegedly assaulting them in a private room adjacent to the ship’s salon.

Brilliant Lady

Federal prosecutors have charged Pawar with two counts of abusive sexual contact following an FBI investigation into incidents that allegedly took place during Brilliant Lady’s nine-night Alaska voyage, which departed Seattle on 23rd June 2026.

According to the criminal complaint filed in the Western District of Washington, the alleged offences occurred on or around 26th June while the ship was sailing in waters covered by US maritime jurisdiction. Prosecutors allege Pawar persuaded women who had booked hair appointments to accept free massages, despite massage services not being offered through his role or in the salon where he worked.

Investigators claim Pawar escorted women into a small, secluded room next to the salon before allegedly placing his hands underneath their clothing and touching intimate areas without their consent. In at least one of the alleged incidents, prosecutors say he locked the door before carrying out the assault.

One of the passengers was reportedly encouraged to make additional salon bookings after Pawar allegedly promised her a complimentary massage in return. Court documents state that what appeared in the booking system as a consultation was instead used to facilitate the private meeting.

The complaint also notes that legitimate massage treatments on Brilliant Lady are only provided in the ship’s Redemption Spa on Deck 5, not in the Dry Dock salon or the Stubble & Groom barbershop where Pawar worked.

FBI Investigation Continues

The FBI arrested Pawar after Brilliant Lady returned to Seattle on 2nd July 2026, with his first court appearance taking place in Tacoma on Monday, 6th July.

During interviews with FBI agents, Pawar reportedly admitted that providing massages was not part of his duties and acknowledged that neither the salon nor the onboard barbershop offers massage treatments.

Virgin Voyages Salon

According to investigators, Pawar also admitted taking between four and five women into the barbershop to provide massages, leading authorities to suggest additional charges could follow as the investigation progresses.

The complaint further alleges that Pawar described separate encounters involving other female guests during his FBI interview. While only two counts have been filed so far, court documents reference another alleged victim whose allegations were not included in the initial complaint.

If convicted on the current charges, Pawar faces a maximum sentence of two years’ imprisonment on each count.

Because the alleged offences took place aboard a cruise ship operating within the special maritime and territorial jurisdiction of the United States, the case is being prosecuted in federal court.

The FBI has also reminded cruise passengers to report any suspected crimes immediately to onboard security staff while still at sea, or directly to law enforcement after leaving the ship.

Virgin Voyages Policies Prohibit Such Conduct

Virgin Voyages has not issued a public statement regarding the charges.

However, the cruise line’s guest code of conduct makes clear that allegations of criminal behaviour are reported to the relevant authorities and addressed immediately onboard.

Virgin Voyages Tune Up Salon

“Any criminal acts or allegations of such acts, including but not limited to the following, will be addressed on board through de-escalation or acting to end the apparent criminal act, and will be reported to the appropriate law enforcement agency,” the code of conduct reads.

The policy specifically lists sexual misconduct and unwanted physical contact among prohibited behaviour. It also states that crew members must not engage in physical relationships with guests or interact with passengers beyond their professional responsibilities.

Although authorities have not confirmed exactly when Pawar was removed from duty, the timeline outlined in court documents suggests he was detained or otherwise separated from passengers before the ship arrived back in Seattle.

Brilliant Lady has continued operating its inaugural Alaska programme without disruption and remains scheduled to sail a series of seven-night cruises from Seattle.

As with all criminal complaints, the charges against Pawar remain allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Holland America’s New Caribbean Cruises Include Quick Escapes And Epic Island Journeys

Holland America Line, a leader in destination-rich travel and personalized service, is opening its 2027–2028 Caribbean season with a range of itineraries designed to give guests more ways to explore the region — from quick five- and six-day getaways to longer voyages that spend more time in port than any other cruise line sailing the Caribbean. Nearly every itinerary includes a call at RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay, the line’s award-winning private island.

Sailing October 2027 through March 2028, the season includes 29 itineraries across 47 departures, visiting 35 ports in 25 countries and territories throughout the Eastern, Western and Southern Caribbean, as well as the Panama Canal. The season also introduces enhanced onboard and shoreside experiences, including the debut of the reimagined Oosterdam as part of the line’s broader Evolution investment across the fleet.

“We’ve built this season to give guests more ways to experience the Caribbean, whether they are looking for a quick getaway or a longer journey that explores more of the region,” said Paul Grigsby, vice president, deployment and revenue planning for Holland America Line. “With more Caribbean itineraries of nine days or longer than any other cruise line, guests have more time to explore each destination and relax at our private island and with signature experiences on board.”

Throughout the season, guests can expect experiences designed to connect more deeply with the region, both on board and ashore. Shore excursions curated with The HISTORY Channel and locally focused “Meet the Makers” tours bring each destination to life, while Destination Dining™ and the line’s Global Fresh Fish Program reflect the flavors of the Caribbean. On board, guests can unwind in spaces like the adults-only aft pool, where live music, poolside service and ocean views create a more relaxed atmosphere.

A New Caribbean Era Begins for Oosterdam

Guests sailing in the Caribbean beginning December 2027 will also have the opportunity to experience the reimagined Oosterdam, the first ship to debut as part of Holland America Line’s Evolution investment. Following its transformation, the ship introduces new stateroom and suite categories designed to reflect how guests travel today, along with expanded access to signature venues.

New accommodations include Solo Verandah staterooms with private balconies and dedicated workspace, as well as premium options such as Bridgeview Suites with panoramic ocean views and expanded living space, and Vista Suites debuting on the ship for the first time. The transformation also adds Grand Dutch Café, an all-day venue inspired by the line’s Dutch heritage. During the 2027–2028 Caribbean season, Oosterdam will sail longer itineraries across the Southern Caribbean and Panama Canal.

RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay is included on nearly every Caribbean itinerary and is being enhanced with new offerings that elevate the private island experience. A new beach club features waiter service, priority tendering, exclusive food and beverage options, and upgraded seating, along with indoor and outdoor spaces with ship views.

Guests will also find a refreshed Lobster Shack, island-exclusive menu items and new beverage experiences including Aperol spritz tricycles and Bacardi beach buggies. Additional upgrades include expanded cabanas and villas, new shopping venues, enhanced beach facilities and activities such as pickleball. Shore excursions range from kayaking and snorkeling with stingrays to horseback riding along the beach.

Holland America Line offers eight holiday cruises during the season, giving guests a range of options to celebrate at sea. Guests can spend the holidays aboard Rotterdam on a Dec. 22, 2027, roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, seven-day Eastern Caribbean Holiday itinerary, sailing to Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos; RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay; Charlotte, Amalie; St. Thomas; and a late-night stay in San Juan, Puerto Rico. For a longer holiday escape, guests can sail aboard the newly reimagined Oosterdam on an 11-day Southern Caribbean Holiday voyage, also departing Dec. 22, roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale, with calls at RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay; George Town, Grand Cayman; and Cartagena, Colombia, along with late-night stays in Aruba and Curaçao.

Ships are decorated for the season and feature festive dining, live music and holiday programming that bring together traditions from around the world, giving guests the opportunity to celebrate without the stress of planning.

A highlight of the season is the 28-Day Pan Am 100th Anniversary Legendary Voyage aboard Zuiderdam, departing Oct. 30, 2027, roundtrip from Miami, Florida. Created in partnership with Pan Am, the sailing traces the airline’s historic Clipper flying boat routes across the Caribbean, Mexico and Latin America, visiting 19 ports in 13 countries. Nearly half of the itinerary features destinations that were part of Pan Am’s original network, offering guests the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of one of travel’s most iconic brands while exploring both well-known and less frequently visited ports throughout the region.

The itinerary includes stops in Nassau, Bahamas, and San Juan, two early hubs in Pan Am’s Caribbean network, along with ports such as Willemstad, Curaçao; Cartagena; and Colón, Panama. The voyage also includes multiple consecutive port days in parts of the Caribbean, giving guests more time in the destination compared to shorter itineraries.

Celebrity-River-Cruises-Innovates-Pre-and-Post-Cruise-Experiences-with-Launch-of-Before-and-After-St.jpeg

Celebrity River Cruises Is Changing What Happens Before And After Your Cruise

Celebrity River Cruises guests can now extend their European adventures with new guided, multi-day Before-and-After Stays. Designed as fully curated, end-to-end destination experiences, the programs allow travelers to explore more of Europe before or after their river cruise. Stays in Prague and Budapest are available for 2027, while Amsterdam and Lausanne will be added to the lineup in 2028. All programs are now open for booking.

An extension of the Celebrity River Cruises’ onboard experience, each two- or three-night stay offers locally led, deeply personal, and richly immersive destination discovery opportunities. Designed for guests to return home with stories no one else can tell, Before and After Stays feature the elevated feel and signature hospitality Celebrity Cruises is known for.

“Every element of a Celebrity River Cruises sailing is designed to bring guests closer to Europe’s culture, history and people, onboard and ashore,” said Laura Hodges Bethge, president of Celebrity Cruises. “Our Before and After Stays are more than an extension of a Celebrity River Cruises vacation, these stays are designed to deepen connection — to the cities, to the people who bring them to life, and to each other — leaving guests with the kind of stories and feelings that only come from truly getting close to a place.”

Personalized, authentic experiences, led by locals.

Local experts lead every Before and After Stay, which includes one Discovery Collection tour each day. Celebrity River Cruises’ take on shore excursions, Discovery Collection tours are experiences built around each city’s most rare, remarkable, and authentic stories.

Guests can choose one of at least three themed tour options each day, allowing them to explore each city through their own interests — whether it’s history, food, art, or just the feeling of wandering somewhere that feels entirely new — at their own pace.

  • Local Storytellers are local experts, not tour guides. They lead small groups on one included tour per day. The tours go beyond landmarks to the moments that define local life.
  • Destination Insiders act as trusted local friends. They know each city better than any guidebook and help guests find its most authentic experiences.

In Amsterdam, a contemporary artist who calls the city home leads guests through Amsterdam’s street art scene, revealing a city where creativity lives in public. This Local Storyteller takes guests to Amsterdam’s most vibrant creative districts, where monumental murals and evolving walls show how the city has protected creative freedom. The day ends with guests picking up a spray can and co-creating a piece on the wall themselves, transforming them from observers of Amsterdam’s vibrant art scene, into active participants in its creative expression.

In Prague, if guests are drawn to history and mystery, they follow the mystical trail of alchemists and ancient scholars through Gothic spires and hidden symbols. For the history buffs who want an even richer experience, they descend into Prague’s shadowed defenses — medieval walls, secret bunkers, and Cold War shelters that witnessed centuries of survival. For guests who best discover a destination through food and drink culture, they can trace the city’s soul through centuries of Czech beer heritage, historic taverns, and the stories poured into every glass.

A seamless, end-to-end experience, The Celebrity Way.

Before and After Stays are an extension of Celebrity River Cruises’ premium onboard experience, bringing Celebrity’s service-first approach to each city. With centrally located, high-end accommodations and daily destination programming, guests can enjoy a balance of guided discovery and personal exploration, with optional premium experiences available for even deeper immersion.

The program handles every detail in advance. Guests do not coordinate or confirm, so they can simply enjoy their stay. Every Before and After Stay also includes premium or ultra-premium hotel accommodations, daily breakfasts, and ship transfers.

2027 and 2028 Before-and-After Stays are on sale now.

With 33 sailings in 2027 and 160 sailings in 2028, Celebrity River Cruises will take guests to more than 50 destinations along the Rhine and Danube. These sailings invite travelers to experience Europe at its most authentic — from tasting regional wines to strolling cobbled village streets — while discovering a new perspective each day.

As a part of Royal Caribbean Group, Celebrity Cruises collaborates with regional organizations and small enterprises along Europe’s rivers to create year-round economic opportunities, championing local artisans, farmers, and cultural institutions within each destination. Programs help safeguard heritage by supporting traditional crafts, music, and storytelling, ensuring that guests experience authentic local culture while communities retain and celebrate their identity. Through volunteering and charitable contributions, Royal Caribbean Group backs education, social inclusion, and infrastructure improvements in towns and villages across Europe.

Carnival Splendor Repositioning Voyage Scrapped Due To Drydock Timing

Carnival Cruise Line has cancelled a repositioning cruise aboard Carnival Splendor scheduled for September 2027, citing a change to the ship’s drydock schedule.

The affected sailing was set to reposition the vessel from Singapore to Sydney with multiple port calls across Indonesia and Australia.

The cancelled voyage was scheduled to depart on 1st September 2027, taking passengers on an extensive repositioning journey from Singapore to the ship’s Australian homeport of Sydney.

The itinerary featured an impressive array of destinations spanning Indonesia and Australia’s eastern coastline.

Planned port calls included Lombok and Benoa in Indonesia, followed by Australian destinations Darwin, Cairns, Airlie Beach and Moreton Island.

The cruise would have offered passengers the unique experience of crossing the Equator during the voyage, a maritime tradition that remains popular amongst cruisers.

August 2027 Drydock Behind Cancellation Decision

Carnival Cruise Line attributed the cancellation to necessary changes in Carnival Splendor’s drydock schedule, which is now set for August 2027.

The timing of this scheduled maintenance period has created a conflict with the ship’s planned repositioning voyage, forcing the cruise line to cancel the sailing entirely.

Drydock periods are essential for cruise ships, allowing operators to perform mandatory safety inspections, technical upgrades, and refurbishment work that cannot be completed whilst the vessel is in service.

These scheduled maintenance windows are strictly regulated by maritime authorities and must be completed within specific timeframes to maintain a ship’s certification for passenger operations.

The decision to reschedule a drydock can stem from various operational considerations, including the availability of drydock facilities, the need to coordinate fleet-wide maintenance schedules, or changes in regulatory requirements.

For Carnival Cruise Line, managing drydock schedules across its extensive fleet of vessels requires careful planning to minimise disruption to passengers whilst ensuring all ships receive necessary maintenance.

Compensation Package Includes Rate Protection And Onboard Credits

In a statement to affected passengers, Carnival Cruise Line outlined a comprehensive compensation package designed to minimise the inconvenience caused by the cancellation.

Compensation Package Includes Rate Protection And Onboard Credits

The cruise line has committed to protecting passengers’ cruise rates on comparable sailings in similar accommodation categories, ensuring they will not face increased costs when rebooking.

Additionally, guests who choose to reschedule their cruise will receive a $50 per person onboard credit, up to a maximum of $100 per stateroom.

This credit will be automatically posted to passengers’ onboard accounts during their rescheduled voyage, providing additional spending power for drinks, speciality dining, shore excursions, or spa treatments.

“We apologise for this disappointing news, but we have a variety of alternatives and are confident you will find another Carnival cruise that is filled with an equal amount of fun,” the company stated in its communication to affected guests.

Carnival Splendor’s Year-Round Australian Operations

The 113,300-tonne Carnival Splendor has established itself as a fixture in the Australian cruise market since joining Carnival’s Australian operations.

Operating year-round from Sydney, the ship offers a diverse programme of cruises ranging from short two-night getaways to extended 12-night voyages.

The vessel’s itineraries span popular destinations throughout Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific, catering to the substantial demand for cruise holidays in the region.

Carnival Splendor

This market has grown significantly over recent years, with Australian passengers representing one of the highest per-capita cruise participation rates globally.

Carnival Splendor’s deployment in Australia reflects the cruise line’s commitment to the region, where it competes with other major operators including P&O Cruises Australia, Royal Caribbean International, and Princess Cruises.

The ship’s year-round presence provides Australian cruisers with consistent access to Carnival’s signature “Fun Ship” experience without requiring international travel.

Impact On Passengers And Regional Cruise Market

The cancellation of repositioning cruises can be particularly disappointing for passengers, as these voyages often offer unique itineraries and exceptional value compared to regular sailings.

Repositioning cruises typically feature longer sea days and unusual port combinations as ships move between seasonal deployment areas, attracting experienced cruisers seeking different experiences.

For the affected passengers who had booked this particular sailing, the cancellation represents more than just a changed cruise plan.

Many may have coordinated significant travel arrangements, including international flights to Singapore, pre-cruise hotel stays, and post-cruise plans in Sydney.

The ripple effects of such cancellations can extend to travel insurance claims, lost deposits on non-refundable bookings, and the challenge of finding comparable alternative arrangements.

The broader impact on the regional cruise market remains minimal, however, as Carnival Splendor will continue its regular operations from Sydney once the drydock is completed.

The Australian cruise market has demonstrated resilience and continued growth, with multiple operators maintaining strong deployment in the region throughout the year.

Carnival Splendor’s Service

Carnival Splendor entered service in July 2008 as part of Carnival’s Concordia class, which represented a significant evolution in the cruise line’s fleet development.

Carnival Splendor in sunset

Originally built for European deployment, the ship underwent several redeployments before settling into its current Australian homeport arrangement.

The vessel accommodates approximately 3,000 passengers at double occupancy and features Carnival’s characteristic fun-focused amenities, including WaterWorks aqua park, multiple dining venues, and extensive entertainment options.

Over the years, Carnival Splendor has received various upgrades during scheduled drydock periods, incorporating new features and maintaining the ship’s appeal to contemporary cruise passengers.

The ship’s assignment to Australia came as Carnival Cruise Line expanded its presence in the Pacific region, recognising the significant growth potential in the Australian and New Zealand markets.

This strategic deployment has allowed Carnival to establish a strong foothold in a market that continues to demonstrate robust demand for cruise holidays.

Looking Ahead To Future Australian Deployments

Despite this scheduling disruption, Carnival Cruise Line remains committed to its Australian operations, with Carnival Splendor continuing to serve as the brand’s flagship presence in the region.

The completion of the August 2027 drydock will likely see the ship return to service with refreshed amenities and potentially new features designed to enhance the guest experience.

The Australian cruise market continues to evolve, with operators adjusting their offerings to meet changing passenger preferences and seasonal demand patterns.

Carnival’s decision to maintain year-round deployment in Sydney underscores the company’s confidence in sustained regional demand, even as the broader cruise industry navigates various operational challenges.

For affected passengers, the silver lining lies in Carnival’s commitment to providing alternative sailings with rate protection and additional onboard credits.

Whilst the cancellation is undoubtedly disappointing, particularly for those who had specifically sought out this unique repositioning itinerary, the compensation package and extended rebooking timeline demonstrate the cruise line’s efforts to minimise passenger inconvenience whilst managing necessary operational changes.

Carnival Faces Lawsuit Over Shore Excursion Injury in Dominican Republic

A former passenger is taking action against Carnival following a serious accident.

Carnival Corporation is defending a personal injury lawsuit filed by a former passenger who suffered a broken ankle during a dune buggy shore excursion in the Dominican Republic. This raises fresh questions about cruise line liability for third-party tours.

Carnival's Mardi Gras cruise ship sailing in the middle of the ocean

Karisha McClinton lodged the complaint in the Southern District of Florida on 3rd July 2026. She is seeking damages for an accident that occurred during a port call at Amber Cove while sailing aboard Mardi Gras in July 2025.

The case joins a growing number of legal challenges facing cruise operators over injuries sustained during shore activities marketed and sold through cruise line websites. This highlights the complex relationship between cruise companies and independent tour operators.

Passenger Suffers Multiple Fractures During Buggy Excursion

The day was filled with excitement that turned to tragedy for the McClinton family.

The incident took place on 6th July 2025, when McClinton and her family visited Amber Cove as part of a weeklong Caribbean sailing. According to court documents, McClinton was participating in the “Waterfalls, Buggies & Monkeys” excursion.

This popular shore activity combines off-road driving with nature experiences when her dune buggy overturned on challenging terrain.

McClinton was operating the vehicle with her six-year-old child seated in the front when the buggy flipped on what the lawsuit describes as “dangerous muddy, rocky terrain.” The vehicle landed on her left ankle, trapping her beneath it.

The complaint notes that no injury to the child occurred during the incident. Her husband was forced to physically lift the buggy off his wife, as excursion staff and safety personnel did not immediately respond to provide assistance, according to the legal filing.

Local medical professionals at the scene recommended immediate surgery, but McClinton initially declined treatment in favour of receiving care aboard the cruise ship.

Extensive Medical Treatment Required Following Return Home

The journey back home revealed the true extent of McClinton’s injuries.

Upon returning to her home in San Antonio, Texas, McClinton sought comprehensive medical evaluation that revealed the full extent of her injuries. Doctors determined that her ankle had been broken in three places, necessitating surgical intervention to repair the damage.

The procedure required the implantation of multiple screws and plates to stabilise the fractures and restore function to her ankle.

The lawsuit does not specify the total medical costs incurred or detail any ongoing treatment requirements, though such injuries typically involve lengthy rehabilitation periods and potential long-term mobility impacts.

The severity of the injury and subsequent medical intervention form the basis of McClinton’s claim for damages against Carnival Corporation. Her legal representation argues that the accident was preventable and resulted directly from negligent practices in how the excursion was operated and marketed.

Allegations Centre on Unsafe Conditions and Inadequate Supervision

The unsafe conditions encountered during the excursion raise serious concerns about safety protocols.

McClinton’s legal team at Aronfeld Trial Lawyers has outlined several specific allegations regarding the conditions under which the excursion operated. The complaint asserts that tour operators failed to provide proper instructions on safely operating the dune buggies.

This neglect left participants unprepared for the challenging terrain they would encounter. The lawsuit further claims that the route lacked appropriate safety features.

Only a barbed wire fence served as barrier protection rather than proper safety railings. Additionally, the complaint alleges that McClinton’s buggy was equipped with dangerously worn tyres, compromising vehicle control and increasing accident risk.

Inadequate supervision of the excursion is another key allegation. The legal filing suggests that the combination of poorly maintained equipment, hazardous terrain, insufficient safety infrastructure, and lack of proper oversight created conditions that made an accident virtually inevitable.

These allegations paint a picture of systemic safety failures rather than an isolated incident of misfortune. The case argues that multiple preventable factors converged to cause McClinton’s injury.

Legal Arguments Focus on Carnival’s Marketing and Disclosure Practices

How Carnival marketed the excursion is central to the legal arguments presented.

Legal Arguments Focus on Carnival's Marketing and Disclosure Practices

The crux of McClinton’s legal argument against Carnival Corporation centres on how the cruise line marketed and sold the excursion. Her attorneys contend that Carnival presented the activity as a safe, vetted experience.

This was done without adequately disclosing that an independent third-party operator – not Carnival itself – would be providing the service. The “Waterfalls, Buggies & Monkeys” excursion was discovered and purchased through Carnival’s official website, where it remains available for booking as of publication.

The lawsuit emphasises that Carnival received a portion of profits from selling the tour, creating what the legal team argues is a duty of care towards participants.

“CARNIVAL created the appearance that it was providing the excursion either directly or through agents of CARNIVAL. MCCLINTON placed trust in CARNIVAL – not some unknown entity she had never heard of before,” the complaint states.

This argument suggests that the cruise line’s branding and marketing efforts created reasonable expectations of safety and quality that were allegedly not met. The legal team is pursuing claims of negligence, arguing that Carnival failed in its responsibility to ensure the excursion met appropriate safety standards before marketing it to passengers.

By profiting from the tour’s sale whilst allegedly misrepresenting its oversight and safety vetting, Carnival breached its duty to guests, according to the lawsuit.

Carnival’s Standard Disclaimers Address Third-Party Tour Liability

Carnival’s disclaimers highlight the complexities of liability in shore excursions.

Carnival Cruise Line, like virtually all major cruise operators, maintains detailed disclaimers regarding shore excursions sold through its booking systems. The cruise line’s “Shore Excursion FAQs” web page explicitly states that most tours are operated by independent local companies.

Carnival acts merely as a facilitator for guest convenience. “The majority of shore excursions, including any related transportation, are operated by local independent companies and they are solely responsible for their products, excursions, and any related transportation,” Carnival’s website clearly states.

The company further disclaims responsibility for “any losses, damage, death, injuries, or claims whatsoever arising from, connected with, or related to any activities engaged in by guests while off of Carnival’s ships or tenders in any port of call.”

These standard industry disclaimers represent cruise lines’ efforts to limit legal liability for activities beyond their direct control. Carnival also states that whilst it endeavours to source reputable and reliable tour operators, it cannot continuously monitor and maintain oversight of independent companies and their equipment.

The legal battle will likely hinge on whether these disclaimers adequately protect Carnival from liability. Alternatively, whether the cruise line’s marketing practices and profit-sharing arrangements create responsibilities that supersede standard contractual limitations.

Courts have issued varying rulings on such matters, making the outcome difficult to predict.

Evidence Suggests Prior Warnings About Equipment Problems

Warnings about equipment issues raise questions about Carnival’s responsibility.

McClinton’s legal team has bolstered their argument by pointing to evidence that Carnival may have been aware of potential safety concerns with the excursion prior to the incident. The complaint includes screenshots of customer reviews posted on Carnival’s own excursion booking page referencing equipment malfunctions and operational problems.

Specifically, some reviews mention buggies breaking down during the tour and experiencing gear-related issues. The lawsuit argues that these warnings should have prompted Carnival to conduct additional safety vetting.

Alternatively, they should have removed the excursion from its offerings until improvements were implemented. However, context is important when evaluating this evidence.

The “Waterfalls, Buggies & Monkeys” excursion currently maintains a rating of 4.3 stars out of 5 on Carnival’s website, indicating generally positive guest feedback. Adventure activities inherently carry some risk, and occasional equipment issues do not necessarily indicate systemic safety failures.

The legal question becomes whether the nature and frequency of complaints visible on Carnival’s own platform should have triggered a higher duty of investigation or disclosure.

If Carnival was aware of recurring problems yet continued selling the excursion without additional warnings, this could strengthen the negligence claim.

Shore Excursion Lawsuits Represent Growing Industry Challenge

The increasing prevalence of lawsuits could drive change within the cruise industry.

The McClinton lawsuit is far from unique in the cruise industry. In March 2025, Cruise Hive reported that Norwegian Cruise Line faced similar legal action after an ATV overturned during a shore excursion, injuring a passenger.

Such cases are becoming increasingly common as adventure-oriented shore activities grow in popularity. Earlier incidents have involved even more severe injuries.

Carnival has faced separate litigation after a passenger reportedly lost both legs in a shore excursion accident in the Bahamas, demonstrating the potentially catastrophic consequences when safety protocols fail.

The cruise industry’s reliance on third-party tour operators creates inherent challenges in maintaining consistent safety standards across dozens of ports and hundreds of available activities.

Whilst cruise lines argue they carefully vet operators, maintaining ongoing oversight of independent companies operating in foreign jurisdictions presents practical difficulties.

These legal challenges may ultimately prompt changes in how cruise lines market shore excursions, the depth of safety vetting they conduct, and the prominence of disclaimers presented to guests during the booking process.

Some consumer advocates argue that cruise lines should accept greater responsibility given their role in selecting operators and profiting from tour sales.

Mardi Gras Continues Regular Operations From Port Canaveral

Life goes on for the Mardi Gras amid the legal battle.

The image shows the Carnival Mardi Gras cruise ship sailing through open ocean, leaving a light trail of wake behind it. The ship’s distinct red and blue hull stands out, with multiple decks featuring balconies, pools, and recreational areas. The clear blue sky and expansive sea emphasize the grandeur and luxury of the vessel on its journey.

Despite the pending litigation, Mardi Gras has continued normal operations from its homeport at Port Canaveral, Florida. The 180,800-gross tonne vessel remains one of Carnival’s flagship offerings, representing the cruise line’s Excel-class design.

It accommodates up to 5,270 guests in double occupancy. Mardi Gras regularly calls at Amber Cove during its seven-night Eastern Caribbean itineraries, and the “Waterfalls, Buggies & Monkeys” excursion remains available for booking by future passengers.

The cruise line has not suspended sales of the tour or issued any public statements regarding enhanced safety protocols. As of publication, Carnival Corporation has not responded publicly to the lawsuit or issued any statement regarding the allegations.

This silence is typical in active litigation, as companies generally avoid public comment that might affect ongoing legal proceedings.

The case will proceed through the federal court system in Florida’s Southern District, where many cruise-related lawsuits are heard due to the Miami headquarters of major cruise corporations.

Resolution could take months or years depending on whether the parties reach a settlement or proceed to trial.

Ambassador Launches New Themed Cruise Celebrating Three Iconic Decades

Ambassador Cruise Line has unveiled a four-night themed sailing that will transport passengers back to the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, departing from the Port of Tyne on 22nd September 2026.

The “Decks & Decades… a 70s, 80s & 90s Celebration” voyage aboard Ambition promises live entertainment, era-specific dining experiences and three fancy-dress evenings dedicated to the music, fashion and cultural moments that defined these iconic decades.

Ambassador Cruise Line Ambition

The themed sailing has been specifically designed to reconnect guests with the songs, styles and shared cultural moments that helped define the seventies, eighties and nineties.

Ambassador Cruise Line has curated a comprehensive entertainment programme that celebrates the music, fashion, food and fun that characterised each era, creating an immersive experience for passengers who lived through these decades or simply appreciate the cultural impact they left behind.

The cruise line’s approach reflects a growing trend across the industry to offer more targeted, experiential voyages that go beyond traditional cruising.

Headline Acts To Bring Each Era To Life

Three guest acts will headline the entertainment programme, each representing a different decade of the celebration.

The Divettes will transport passengers back to the disco era of the 1970s, whilst Wild Boys will capture the synth-pop and new wave sounds that dominated the 1980s. Rounding out the entertainment lineup, 90s Rewind will recreate the Britpop, dance and alternative rock anthems that defined the final decade of the twentieth century.

These tribute acts have been carefully selected to provide authentic representations of each decade’s musical landscape. The performances will take place in Ambition’s entertainment venues, giving passengers multiple opportunities throughout the four-night sailing to experience live music that captures the essence of each era.

Beyond the headline acts, the entertainment programme will include themed quizzes testing passengers’ knowledge of trivia from all three decades, as well as cabaret performances inspired by the iconic variety shows and entertainment formats that were popular during these years.

The combination of live music, interactive entertainment and theatrical performances creates a multi-layered experience that appeals to different passenger preferences and engagement levels.

Themed Dining And Fancy Dress Evenings Add Authenticity

Ambassador has extended the decade-themed experience beyond entertainment to include specially designed menus that reflect the culinary trends and popular dishes of the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.

These themed dining experiences will allow passengers to rediscover foods and flavours that were fashionable during each era, from 1970s fondue and prawn cocktails to 1980s nouvelle cuisine and 1990s fusion dishes.

Three dedicated fancy-dress evenings will give passengers the opportunity to recreate the fashion statements of each decade. Whether donning flared trousers and platform shoes, sporting shoulder pads and neon colours, or embracing grunge flannel and choker necklaces, guests will be encouraged to fully immerse themselves in the aesthetic of each era.

These dress-up evenings have become a hallmark of Ambassador’s themed sailings, with passengers often embracing the opportunity to compete for best-dressed accolades and photograph opportunities.

The combination of themed dining and dress nights creates a comprehensive sensory experience that engages passengers throughout the sailing. This approach has proven particularly successful on Ambassador’s previous themed voyages, with many passengers citing these interactive elements as highlights of their cruise experience.

Ambassador’s Growing Portfolio Of Themed Sailings

The “Decks & Decades” voyage joins an expanding roster of themed cruises that have become an increasingly popular part of Ambassador Cruise Line’s entertainment offering. The cruise line has previously operated successful themed sailings including “The Summer of ’85 Revisited,” a homage to the historic Live Aid concert, as well as individual “Back to the 70s” and “Back to the 80s” sailings that focused on single decades.

Ambassador Cruise Line Palladium Show

Ambassador has also hosted a “Battle of the Bands” themed cruise featuring tribute acts recreating the music of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, tapping into the enduring rivalry between two of Britain’s most influential rock groups. These themed voyages represent a strategic differentiation for Ambassador within the competitive UK cruise market, offering passengers experiences that extend beyond standard cruise itineraries.

The success of these themed sailings reflects broader industry recognition that modern cruise passengers increasingly seek immersive, experiential travel that combines destination exploration with onboard programming tailored to specific interests. Ambassador’s focus on nostalgic themes resonates particularly well with its core demographic, many of whom lived through these cultural moments and appreciate the opportunity to revisit them in a social, celebratory setting.

Comprehensive Entertainment Beyond Themed Events

Whilst the “Decks & Decades” theme will permeate much of the sailing, Ambassador Cruise Line continues to offer its signature entertainment programming throughout the voyage.

Passengers can expect productions performed by the ship’s resident entertainment team, theatre@sea performances that bring theatrical experiences to the cruise environment, and vignettes that provide shorter entertainment interludes throughout the day.

Specialist guest speakers will also feature during the sailing, offering talks and presentations on topics of interest to Ambassador’s passengers. Creative workshops provide hands-on opportunities for guests to learn new skills or explore artistic pursuits, adding an educational dimension to the entertainment programme.

This layered approach to onboard programming ensures that passengers who may not be primarily drawn to the themed elements of the cruise still find ample entertainment options throughout the four-night sailing. Ambassador has built its reputation on providing comprehensive entertainment that appeals to the preferences of British cruise passengers, particularly those sailing from regional UK ports.

Ambition Provides The Setting For The Themed Voyage

Ambition Provides The Setting For The Themed Voyage

The themed sailing will take place aboard Ambition. Originally built in 1991 as Ausonia for Carnival Cruise Lines, the ship sailed under various names including Regal Princess for Princess Cruises before joining Ambassador’s fleet in 2022. The vessel underwent refurbishment before entering service for the British cruise line, with updates designed to appeal to Ambassador’s target demographic.

Ambition accommodates approximately 1,400 passengers across a range of accommodation options, from interior and oceanview cabins to balcony staterooms and suites. The ship features multiple dining venues, several bars and lounges, a theatre, and various public spaces that provide the infrastructure for Ambassador’s comprehensive entertainment programming.

The vessel’s mid-size capacity creates an intimate atmosphere that many British passengers prefer, avoiding the overwhelming scale of some mega-ships whilst still providing sufficient facilities and amenities for a comfortable cruise experience.

Departing from the Port of Tyne in Newcastle, Ambition serves passengers from the North East of England and Scotland, offering convenient embarkation without requiring lengthy transfers to Southampton or other southern ports.

Attractive Pricing Through Seasonal Sales Campaign

Passengers interested in booking the “Decks & Decades” sailing can take advantage of Ambassador’s seasonal sales campaign, which offers savings of up to 20% on selected sailings booked before 29th July 2026. The promotion applies to various fare categories, making the themed cruise accessible across different budget levels.

Saver Fares start from £615 per person based on two people sharing a suite, incorporating the 20 per cent discount. Without the promotional pricing, these fares would be £768.75 per person. The Saver Fare category provides basic cruise accommodation and access to all standard onboard facilities and entertainment, representing an entry-level option for passengers seeking value-focused pricing.

Ambassador Fares, which include the top Ambassador Expedition Drinks Package, start from £834 per person based on two people sharing a suite with the 20 per cent discount applied. The inclusion of a premium drinks package in this fare category appeals to passengers who prefer upfront pricing that encompasses beverages throughout the sailing, eliminating the need to monitor onboard spending on drinks.

Industry Context And Market Positioning

Ambassador Cruise Line’s focus on themed sailings represents a strategic approach to differentiation within the competitive UK cruise market.

Launched in 2022, Ambassador is one of the newest additions to Britain’s cruise industry, positioning itself as an adult-focused cruise line offering no-fly cruising from regional UK ports. The company operates two ships – Ambience and Ambition – with itineraries primarily focused on Northern European destinations, the Mediterranean, and occasional transatlantic and extended voyages.

Ambition Port of Tyne Newcastle 21 August 2024 - Medium

The cruise line’s emphasis on nostalgic themed cruises aligns with its target demographic of mature British passengers who appreciate the convenience of sailing from regional ports and value entertainment programming that reflects their cultural experiences.

By creating themed sailings around specific decades, music genres, or cultural moments, Ambassador provides differentiated experiences that justify premium pricing and encourage repeat bookings from satisfied passengers.

The growth of themed cruises across the industry reflects broader consumer trends towards experiential travel and personalisation. Passengers increasingly seek voyages that align with specific interests, whether music, food, wellness, or cultural themes, rather than generic cruise experiences.

Ambassador’s success with themed sailings has encouraged the cruise line to expand this aspect of its programming, with the “Decks & Decades” voyage representing the latest iteration of this strategy.

As the UK cruise market continues to mature and expand, cruise lines operating in this space must continually innovate to attract and retain passengers. Ambassador’s approach of combining convenient regional departures with differentiated onboard programming positions the cruise line competitively against both larger international brands and other UK-focused operators.
