Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald To Step Back From Full-Time Social Media Role

After nearly four decades with Carnival Cruise Line, brand ambassador John Heald is preparing for a significant change in his day-to-day responsibilities, stepping back from the intensive social media engagement that has defined much of his role over the past 19 years.

John Heald Complaints

Heald, who has worked for Carnival in a variety of positions including bartender, cruise director and senior cruise director, revealed that he will be shifting his focus away from spending long hours online and instead returning to what he enjoys most: interacting directly with guests and crew onboard Carnival ships.

The announcement was made during a Facebook Live broadcast on 2nd June 2026, where Heald explained that maintaining engagement with his 673,000 Facebook followers has become an increasingly demanding commitment.

According to Heald, he currently spends around eight to nine hours each day, six days a week, responding to guest comments and answering questions through social media.

While stressing that he is not leaving Facebook entirely, Heald said the time has come to reshape his role and concentrate on face-to-face interactions throughout the fleet.

“I really do want to be where I’m so very happy, and that isn’t behind a computer. It is here with you, but with the crew and with the guests, that’s the most important thing for me is that connectivity,”

Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy joined Heald during the announcement and voiced her support for the transition.

The pair were sailing aboard Carnival Sunrise during a five-night Bahamas voyage that departed Miami on 30th May 2026. The sailing was part of celebrations surrounding the opening of Half Moon Cay’s new pier and recently enhanced guest facilities.

Facebook Presence Will Continue In A Different Form

Although Heald’s daily involvement in responding to thousands of comments will be reduced, his popular Facebook page will remain active.

Instead of focusing primarily on answering guest questions, future content is expected to feature more behind-the-scenes updates from across the Carnival fleet, previews of upcoming projects and ships, and personal cruise vlogs from Heald’s travels.

He also confirmed that his weekly video updates will continue, along with posts covering major Carnival announcements and other cruise-related news.

“I’ll do my infamous three-minute videos. I’ll do one of those a week. I will help as many people as I can…I will never lose that connectivity with people. I will post all the news and anything that will be fun for you to read about,” Heald promised.

The change means Heald will become more selective about the questions he answers publicly, choosing issues that may be useful to a broader section of the cruise community rather than responding to individual comments throughout the day.

New Email Contact Option Planned

To help maintain communication with guests, Heald also revealed that Carnival plans to introduce a dedicated email address where passengers can submit questions directly to him.

The email address is expected to be announced publicly in the coming days and is currently anticipated to launch by 15th June 2026.

“I’m still gonna answer questions. I’m gonna set up an email address which I will post later in the coming days so people can do that,” Heald confirmed.

Heald acknowledged that the volume of correspondence means he will be unable to personally respond to every email he receives. Nevertheless, early reaction from followers has been overwhelmingly positive, with many welcoming the opportunity to see him spending more time onboard ships rather than behind a computer screen.

The move marks a notable evolution in a role that has made Heald one of the most recognisable personalities in the cruise industry. Since becoming Carnival’s brand ambassador in 2007, he has served as a direct link between the cruise line and its guests, building one of the largest and most engaged social media communities in cruising while providing updates, answering questions and sharing a behind-the-scenes look at life within the Carnival organisation.

Royal Caribbean Crew Member Found Dead in St. Kitts After Making Solo Hike

A search which lasted several days in the cruise port of St. Kitts has ended in heartbreak. Local authorities have confirmed that the body of a missing 33-year-old man was located on Monday, June 1.

St Kitts cruise port missing person found

Initial news reports on this story called the man a passenger on the cruise ship, but a statement sent to USA Today later revealed he was a crew member. Ship tracking data from the time of his disappearance confirmed the vessel was Royal Caribbean’s Rhapsody of the Seas.

The victim, identified as Chinese national Wang Zyuan, had reportedly set off alone last week to hike Mount Liamuiga. The mountain is a dormant volcano that marks the highest peak on the island.

Hiking the trail is a popular activity on St Kitts, and the mountain top is almost 3,800 feet tall.

But the solo hike turned into a distress call and urgent search.

A Disappearance and a Final Distress Call

According to the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force Facebook page, Wang was last seen heading toward the trail around 10:00 AM on Wednesday, May 27.

By 2:00 PM that afternoon, things started to look dire. Wang managed to place a 911 call to local emergency services, reporting that he had become completely disoriented and lost deep within the mountain’s dense rainforest.

Emergency teams immediately mobilized to track his location, but phone contact was lost shortly after the initial call. Attempts to ping his device or establish a secondary connection were unsuccessful.

Royal Caribbean Statement

In the statement provided to the media following the confirmation of his employment status, Royal Caribbean expressed its grief over the loss:

“We are saddened to learn a crew member has passed away. We appreciate the tremendous efforts of the local authorities and rescue teams, who worked tirelessly over the past several days.“

The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force also expressed their condolences on a social media post:

“It is with deep regret that the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF) confirms that Mr Wang Zyuan, who had been missing on the Mt. Liamuiga trail since Wednesday, May 27th, 2026, was located deceased on Monday, June 1st, 2026, by one of the search teams…

Detailed information is not yet available, and investigations into the circumstances are ongoing.

The Force extends its heartfelt condolences to Mr Wang’s family, friends, and associates during this painful time. We respectfully ask the public to refrain from speculation and to rely only on official sources for accurate information as this matter proceeds.”

Reports suggest Wang worked within the ship’s restaurant department, arriving on the island while the vessel was docked in port early last week.

The Search and Recovery

Finding someone in the thick forest of Mount Liamuiga is not an easy task, especially if someone has gone off trail. Even the hiking routes are known for steep rock faces, thick mud, and sometimes very slippery conditions.

The search effort was an island-wide operation. Over several days, teams scoured the mountainside and the rugged terrain surrounding the volcano’s crater.

Investigation and Safety Reminders

At this point, local authorities have not released an official cause of death. The investigation is still underway, and we still don’t know the full circumstances of the situation.

Following the incident, local tourism and law enforcement agencies issued strong reminders to travelers to never hike unfamiliar, dense island trails alone.

They are recommending to hire a certified local guide, and to ensure communication devices are fully charged and equipped with offline maps before starting out.

This tragic case might feel similar to another disappearance in Juneau, Alaska last year. In that incident, 69-year-old hiker Thomas Casey went missing after setting out alone on a trail. Just like the search in St. Kitts, rescue teams used cellphone pings to track his last known signal through a massive search grid.

Responders eventually found Casey’s body in a remote area near the Mendenhall Glacier, where he had suffered a fatal fall.

Princess Cruises Now Requires a Passport to Sail out of San Juan, Puerto Rico

Princess Cruises is now requiring a passport when taking a cruise out of San Juan, Puerto Rico, even if you are sailing roundtrip from the port.

Crown Princess

Normally, passports are not required, although heavily recommended, for all closed-looped cruises from a U.S. port. Since Puerto Rico is a territory of the U.S., it’s a U.S. port. A closed-loop cruise is one that start and ends at the exact same port.

Princess Cruises has made a change and passports are now required for all cruises out of San Juan, this is for all guests (U.S. and non U.S.).

Why the change? The U.S. Customs and Border Control no longer considers the itineraries from Princess as closed-looped sailings.

Princess offers cruisers an embarkation/disembarkation option in Barbados, which is a port stop on the cruise line’s sailings from San Juan. This allows guests to get on the ship in either San Juan or Barbados for a seven-night cruise to the Southern Caribbean. Because of that, they are no longer considered closed-loop sailings.

Cruises where you can board at different ports of the sailing are common in the Europe and the Mediterranean, especially on MSC Cruises and Costa Cruises. However, there aren’t many cruises with flexible options like that in North America.

This change from Princess Cruises only affects sailings on Crown Princess and Emerald Princess out of San Juan. Closed-loop Princess sailings from Florida and California will not require a passport, just a valid government photo ID and a birth certificate.

Star Princess
Closed-loop sailings on a Princess cruise ship from Ft. Lauderdale and other U.S. ports will continue not require a passport.

Why are passports recommended even on closed-looped cruises? For one, it’s always wise to have a passport if you are going to be in another country.

Secondly, if you need to fly home from a foreign country for an emergency, you can only do so if you have a passport.

Carnival Cruise Passenger Hailed as Hero After Rescuing 84-Year-Old Who Fell in Water

Social media is lighting up after a Carnival Cruise Line passenger jumped into the water to rescue an 84-year-old man who had fallen off the pier. And the rescue all took place during the man’s seventh wedding anniversary sailing.

The incident took place in Costa Maya, Mexico while Carnival Jubilee was in port on May 19, 2026.

Carnival Jubilee docked in port

There’s a reason for those thick and bright yellow lines along the pier. And you will usually get yelled at pretty quickly if you try to cross over them.

While we don’t know the full circumstances in this case, an elderly guest crossed this line fell off the pier while on his way back to the ship.

While the 84-year-old struggled in the water, a fellow Carnival guest decided to take matters into his own hands.

After crew members threw a flotation device into the water, a passenger, we now know as Myron, jumped into the water to keep the man from drowning.

Myron’s wife later said that the man was face down in the water when her husband jumped in.

@amynelson2013 My husband saved a man life in Costa Maya while on our 7 day cruise!! He literally took action before carnival cruise workers did.. SHARE THIS!! #carnivalcruise #costamaya #makethisviral #jubilee #hero ♬ original sound – Amy018

Online video shows both men being pulled out of the water by the crew after Myron had secured the man, holding him above the water. Some reports state that the elderly passenger may have been in the water for several minutes.

Carnival made this statement regarding the incident:

“Our security team responded immediately, and the guest was safely recovered and transported to the ship’s medical center for care.”

The man’s actions have been praised all over social media, as pictures surfaced of Myron getting a free steak dinner at Fahrenheit 555 from the cruise line.

It should be noted that it is still very dangerous to try to save someone who may be drowning as they can pull the rescuer down with them. But if reports of the elderly man being face down for a period of time are true, it appears that Myron wasn’t willing to just watch a man die.

“Without a moment’s hesitation, my husband lept into the water,” his wife Amy stated on TikTok, adding, “With every ounce of strength, he managed to grab hold of the elderly man, lift him onto his shoulder, and cradle him safely until assistance arrived to lift them both out of the water.”

Commenters online are saying Myron should get free cruises for the rest of his life, while also being somewhat critical of the crew’s response time.

Myron and Amy were on Carnival Jubilee celebrating their seventh wedding anniversary. And Amy’s statements online, it seems the situation has only made their bond stronger.

“For those who know my husband, you’re likely aware that despite his stature, he possesses extraordinary physical strength and a heart of gold. It’s this incredible strength and selflessness that enabled him to save a life, and I couldn’t be more proud to call him my husband”, Amy stated.

@amynelson2013 I’d like to share with you a truly remarkable part of our cruise experience that has had a profound and lasting impact on my husband’s mental and emotional well-being. On the third day of our voyage, as we were returning to the ship after exploring the breathtaking beauty of Costa Maya, we were met with a scene of utter panic and distress. The air was filled with screams and frantic gestures, directing our attention to the ocean, which prompted my husband to spring into action, rushing down the pier to investigate the cause of the commotion. What he encountered was an elderly man struggling desperately in the water, face down (drowning)and on the brink of disaster. Without a moment’s hesitation, my husband leapt into the water, as no one else seemed to be taking action, including the Carnival staff. With every ounce of strength, he managed to grab hold of the elderly man, lift him onto his shoulder, and cradle him safely until assistance arrived to lift them both out of the water. For those who know my husband, you’re likely aware that despite his stature, he possesses extraordinary physical strength and a heart of gold. It’s this incredible strength and selflessness that enabled him to save a life, and I couldn’t be more proud to call him my husband. Yes that’s me crying because what if my husband and that man didn’t make it out alive.. I was so happy seeing him alive and well.. #carnivalcruise #makethisviral #costamaya #jubilee #hero @carnival ♬ sonido original – DOOM

MSC-World-Asia-2.jpg

MSC World Asia Countdown Begins As Cruise Line Reveals Six Signature Attractions

MSC Cruises has unveiled six headline attractions that will feature aboard MSC World Asia as the cruise line marks six months until the vessel enters service.

The new flagship, which will become the third ship in MSC Cruises’ World Class series, is scheduled to be officially named in Le Havre, France, on 28th November 2026 before beginning her inaugural Mediterranean season from Barcelona on 4th December 2026.

MSC World Asia

Ahead of the launch, MSC Cruises has highlighted six major onboard experiences that guests will be able to enjoy, ranging from high-adrenaline attractions to immersive entertainment venues.

The ship will operate seven-night sailings across the Mediterranean, calling at destinations including Marseille, Messina, Civitavecchia for Rome, Naples and Valletta. Guests will also be able to embark at any port along the itinerary.

“Our World Class ships have been a great success with guests, and MSC World Asia, the third of eight in this class, marks the next step in this journey. As we look ahead to her inaugural Mediterranean season, we are proud to continue delivering ships that reflect our vision, innovation, beautiful design, and focus on the guest experience, with each one raising the bar even further.

“I’m also proud to announce that Captain Paolo Benini will take the helm of MSC World Asia, in recognition of his outstanding leadership on MSC Euribia, including during its recent deployment in Dubai. Having joined MSC Cruises in 2024 with a distinguished maritime career, he is widely respected for his calm, people-focused command and is the ideal choice to lead this remarkable new flagship”.

Gianni Onorato, CEO of MSC Cruises

MSC said the vessel will incorporate design influences inspired by Asia’s culture, landscapes and artistic heritage while introducing new entertainment and dining concepts alongside popular features already found on other World Class ships.

Six Experiences Set To Define MSC World Asia

Among the most eye-catching additions is Cliffhanger, an over-water swing attraction that will extend 50 metres above the sea. MSC describes the ride as a European first, with guests swinging back and forth beyond the edge of the ship while suspended high above the ocean.

MSC World Asia Cliffhanger

Another signature feature will be The Spiral @ Tree of Life. At 81.3 metres long, it is expected to become the longest dry slide at sea. The attraction spans 11 decks and takes inspiration from the famous Supertree structures found at Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay.

The Family Aventura district will also feature the Twin Racer and U Drop waterslides. Guests will be able to race side-by-side on Twin Racer or tackle the steep drops and twists of U Drop.

MSC Formula One Simulator World Asia

For those seeking adventure beyond the waterpark, MSC World Asia will include a two-level Adventure Trail ropes course suspended above the sea. Covering more than 6,200 square feet, the attraction will incorporate Sky Rails elements similar to a zip line while offering expansive ocean views.

Motorsport fans will find the MSC Formula Racer simulator in the ship’s Hall of Games. The two-seat attraction is designed to replicate the experience of driving a Formula 1 car and builds on MSC Cruises’ long-running partnership with Formula 1.

Rounding out the list is the MSC Luna Park Arena, a new interactive venue featuring digital technology that transforms the floor into a giant gaming space. The cruise line says it will be the first attraction of its kind on any MSC ship and will host interactive games, original game shows and themed entertainment events spread across two decks.

More Than Thrills On Board

While the attractions are expected to be a major draw, MSC World Asia will also offer a broad range of dining, accommodation and leisure options.

MSC World Asia Slide

The ship will feature more than 40 bars, lounges and restaurants, alongside seven swimming pools and 13 hot tubs. Family-focused entertainment will play a significant role throughout the vessel, while public areas will showcase artwork inspired by Asian landscapes and traditions.

MSC Cruises has also confirmed that MSC World Asia will offer the widest range of MSC Yacht Club suite categories available across the fleet to date, giving guests more premium accommodation choices than on previous ships.

The vessel’s official naming ceremony in Le Havre will include the traditional maritime christening ritual, with a champagne bottle being broken against the ship’s bow before the vessel begins service in the Mediterranean less than a week later.

MSC World Asia is the latest step in MSC Cruises’ ongoing expansion of its World Class programme, with the cruise line planning a total of eight ships in the series.

In the past, John Heald’s extremely popular For Fun Sakes sailings originally started out as “Blogger Cruises” back when Heald ran his popular blog on Carnival Cruise Line.

As Heald says, the cruise is always full of “full of fun, comradery, and surprises“.

Prices for cabins on the President’s Cruise, at the time of press, start at the following, based on double occupancy:

*Note: There will be an extra charge to participate in the President’s and FFS activities. However, it is usually a nominal charge, around $25, and includes free drinks at cocktail parties and things like that.

The FFS #8 cruise took place last month in Alaska on Carnival Spirit, with the 2027 cruise promising to be the best one yet.

Cruise Fever will have more information on Carnival’s Presidents Cruise with John when it is announced by Carnival.

Illness Outbreak Hits 13% of Passengers on U.S Flagged Cruise Ship

A gastrointestinal (GI) illness was reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that took place on a U.S. flagged cruise ship that is currently sailing in Alaska.

cruise ship deck

The illness outbreak on Lindblad Expeditions’ National Geographic Sea Bird took place during the ship’s most recent cruise to Alaska.

During the six-day cruise that ended on Sunday, the CDC has reported that 13.6% of passengers reported being ill and 12.5% of crew members on the small ship that carries 66 guests. The predominant symptoms of the outbreak were vomiting and diarrhea. It is unknown at this time if it was norovirus or another causative agent.

Cruise lines are required to report to the CDC anytime that 2% or more of passengers/crew members report being sick on a voyage. If the number crosses 3%, it is officially labeled as an outbreak and listed on the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program’s (VSP) portion of their website.

In response to the outbreak, the crew on board the ship reported the following actions:

  • Increased cleaning and disinfection procedures according to their outbreak prevention and response plan
  • Isolated ill passengers and crew
  • Consulted with VSP about sanitation cleaning procedures and reporting ill cases

The VSP has remotely monitored the situation. This includes reviewing the cruise ship’s outbreak response and sanitation procedures.

This is the fifth illness outbreak of 2026, down from 17 during the first five months of the year compared to 2025.

Out of the five this year, two were from E. coli and the other two from norovirus.

The CDC states that determining the causative agent of an illness outbreak can take some time. When an outbreak occurs, people whose symptoms met the case definition are asked to provide stool or vomitus samples. These samples are tested to determine the causative agent.

About Sea Bird

National Geographic Sea Bird, a cruise ship which helped define expedition travel, is currently in its final year of cruising.

The 31 cabin cruise ship can access many unique places that larger ship’s cannot go to. It has six Zodiacs and 16 kayaks, perfect for expedition cruising in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest.

Viking’s Newest Ship, Viking Mira, Christened in Venice, Italy

Viking christened and named their newest ocean ship, Viking Mira, during a ceremony that took place in Venice, Italy.

Rebecca “Becky” Webb Wilson, an accomplished attorney, author, photographer and philanthropist, served as ceremonial godmother of the ship.

During the naming ceremony, Rebecca used a Viking broad axe to cut a ribbon that released a bottle of Norwegian aquavit to break on the ship’s hull. It’s a tradition that Viking uses a bottle of Norwegian aquavit to break against the hull instead of champagne.

Guests at the ceremony also enjoyed performances by Sissel Kyrkjebø, one of the world’s leading crossover sopranos and godmother of the Viking Jupiter.

Torstein Hagen, Executive Chairman of Viking, said the following:

“We are proud to welcome the new Viking Mira to our award-winning fleet of elegant sister ships. We are also very honored to have Rebecca as our newest Viking godmother. Her lifelong commitment to public service, exploration and cultural understanding is an inspiration to all of us.”

Viking Mira is a 54,300 gross ton ship that can carry up to 998 guests in 499 cabins. The ship is sailing its inaugural season in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.

The Truth Behind the 80,000-Passenger Nuclear Mega-Ship

A story about a super mega ship is popping up all over the place this week, and questions about it are popping up just as fast. I thought I’d dive deeper into a project known as the Freedom Ship, and see if it has any chance of seeing the light of day

Freedom ship 80,000 capacity

The 4,500-foot nuclear-powered floating city would have a capacity of 80,000 people. But don’t think of it as a cruise ship.

It’s more of a place to live, that just happens to be in the middle of the ocean, as it “continuously circumnavigates the globe”.

The idea is not new. It’s a concept that was first introduced about 30 years ago by a Florida engineer named Norman Nixon.

The 2008 financial crisis put the project on pause, but with new technological advances in both nuclear power and modular engineering, the dream of a mobile ocean city are circulating online once again.

Here is a realistic look at what the developers are actually planning, and how much of it is actually feasible right now.

Video of Freedom Ship

What is Proposed on Board?

If you are expecting to sail right up to port cities, enjoy sailaway parties, and have a non-stop conga line, think again. The Freedom Ship is designed as a self-contained city built on a giant, flat-bottomed steel platform rather than a standard ship hull.

It’s not designed to pull into ports, as there isn’t one big enough to even allow that to happen anyway.

Keep in mind that renderings are just renderings. A brief look at the gallery of proposed spaces on this ship look like they are straight out of sci-fi. But then again, the ships being built today would have been unfathomable 50 years ago.

The blueprints for Freedom Ship resemble a major city neighborhood:

  • Residential & Hotel Space: 17,000 separate living units which range from 300-square-foot condos to multi-million dollar luxury suites, alongside 10,000 hotel rooms for rotating visitors.
  • A Full School District: Because people would live here permanently, the design includes a full K-12 school system and a college campus so children can attend classes while traveling.
  • Commercial Districts: Plans reveal a massive multi-story shopping mall, 3,000 commercial units for independent businesses, a 15,000-seat sports stadium, and a major medical center.
  • On-Board Transit: The ship features over 100 acres of open outdoor space, parks, bicycle paths, and an onboard light rail or transit system just to help residents get from one side of the structure to the other.
  • Entertainment & Nightlife: To keep 80,000 people entertained, the blueprints outline a massive world-class concert hall for live music and theater, multiple movie theaters, and a sprawling, Vegas-style casino.
  • Fitness & Recreation: Alongside those top-deck water parks, the plans feature multiple state-of-the-art fitness centers, full-sized gymnasiums, and dedicated sports courts for everything from basketball to tennis.

Most unique of all is the top deck. It is designed as a flat, open runway to host small commercial turboprop aircraft, allowing residents to fly to and from the mainland at will.

You can check out dozens of renderings of the proposed ship and its amenities here.

Why Even Build This?

Why would anyone want to build an 80,000-person island with a propellor? The developers say that this is not meant to be a vacation destination.

According to official statements from the design team:

“Hospitality aboard the Freedom Ship is not conceived as a cruise experience. It operates within the structure of a permanent city—serving visitors, supporting global engagement, and contributing to economic vitality while remaining subordinate to the platform’s primary identity as a place of residence and work.”

The primary driving factor behind the project isn’t leisure.  It’s a lifestyle philosophy that has more do with economics in an ever-changing world.

Because the ship is designed to remain permanently offshore in international waters, developers pitch it as a community entirely free from local property taxes, real estate taxes, sales taxes, and import duties.

As the developers note:

“At the core of the vision is permanence. Residents are not passengers. Homes, workplaces, education, healthcare, commerce, and public spaces are integrated into a single platform designed to function continuously over time, supporting real communities rather than temporary populations.”

The ship would slowly circle the globe once every two to three years, anchoring off major international coasts to let businesses trade and residents explore the mainland via ferry or the onboard airstrip.

The Shift to Nuclear Power

A ship of this size requires a ridiculous amount of energy to keep the lights on, run the light rail, and power the propulsion systems.

Traditional heavy fuel oil would be a logistical and environmental nightmare.

That is why modern iterations of the concept lean heavily on Molten Salt Reactors (MSRs).

Unlike older high-pressure nuclear technology, modern MSRs operate at low pressure, meaning there is no risk of an explosive steam blowout. If the ship loses all power, a plug physically melts, and the liquid fuel automatically drains into a secure underground containment structure where it cools into a solid, safe block of rock.

With a nuclear plant on board, the ship could theoretically generate its own electricity, desalinate its own water, and travel the world for up to 15 years straight without ever needing to pull into a port to refuel.

The Reality Check

So, will you be buying an ocean-view condo on this 4,500-foot atomic city anytime soon? Don’t count on it.

The estimated price tag to construct the Freedom Ship sits well north of $10 billion to $14 billion. On top of that, standard shipbuilding techniques cannot easily handle a hull of this size due to the intense structural stress caused by ocean waves, meaning a shipyard would essentially have to invent an entirely new way to build a ship.

That’s probably the biggest obstacle to this entire project right now.

While modern nuclear propulsion solves the ship’s massive energy problem, the project is still very much on the drawing board. For now, the future of cruising will stay focused on standard-sized ships, although a 7,000-passenger ship was not so standard just a few years back.

In this industry, I’ve learned to never say never.
