Giant Nuclear-Powered Cruise Ship To Hold 80,000 People

The ambitious Freedom Ship project has resurfaced with renewed plans to create what would become the largest vessel ever constructed, a nuclear-powered floating city capable of housing tens of thousands of people while permanently circumnavigating the globe.

Freedom Ship

If built, the vessel would stretch almost a mile in length, span approximately 800 feet in width and rise 30 decks above the waterline. The proposed ship would measure more than 2 million gross tons and accommodate up to 80,000 people, including 50,000 permanent residents, 10,000 visitors and 20,000 crew members.

Designed to operate as a self-contained community, Freedom Ship would sail continuously at around seven knots, offering residents a lifestyle at sea while visiting destinations around the world without ever needing to permanently dock.

Freedom Ship - Balconies & Promenade

The scale of the project would eclipse anything currently operating in the cruise industry. By comparison, Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, presently the world’s largest cruise ship, measures 1,198 feet long and 248,663 gross tons.

Floating City Would Remain Offshore

Plans outlined by Freedom Cruise Line International, Inc. envision far more than a traditional cruise ship. The vessel would function as a floating city complete with schools, hotels, retail outlets, restaurants, museums, green spaces, a water park and a 15,000-seat stadium.

Freedom Ship - Stadium

Because of its immense dimensions, the ship would be unable to berth at conventional cruise ports. Instead, it would remain anchored or positioned offshore, with residents and visitors transferred to land using shuttle vessels.

Project supporters believe nuclear propulsion could provide the vast amount of energy required to sustain such a large community while reducing emissions compared with conventional marine fuels.

Freedom Ship - Transport

Despite the renewed attention, the concept remains in its early stages. Freedom Ship was first proposed during the 1990s and has spent decades as a largely theoretical project without moving into construction.

The latest vision carries an estimated cost exceeding €14 billion, highlighting the significant financial commitment that would be required before work could begin.

Freedom Ship - Office Space

“We are firmly convinced that we can achieve this, but the crucial factor remains funding,” said CEO Roger Gooch.

According to the company, construction would take place in Indonesia if financing is secured, with a projected build time of three to four years.

Freedom Ship - Internal Balcony Spaces

Major Challenges Remain

While supporters continue to promote the concept, many maritime observers remain doubtful that the project can overcome the substantial engineering, regulatory and financial obstacles standing in its way.

Building a vessel several times larger than the biggest cruise ships currently in service would present unprecedented challenges, from structural engineering and propulsion systems to safety regulations and operational logistics.

Freedom Ship - Sustainability

Questions also remain over nuclear licensing requirements, environmental approvals, insurance considerations and whether a shipyard exists with the capability to construct a vessel of such extraordinary size.

Nevertheless, project leaders remain optimistic about the proposal’s prospects.

Freedom Ship - School

“It’s an extraordinary concept,” said project director Sridev Mookerjea. “With a good dose of perseverance, we can turn this dream into reality.”

For now, Freedom Ship remains one of the most ambitious concepts ever proposed for the maritime industry. Until funding is secured and questions surrounding construction, regulation and long-term operations are addressed, the project remains firmly in the realm of vision rather than reality.

Missing Cruise Passenger Found Dead After Days-Long Search On St. Kitts Volcano

A 33-year-old Chinese national who went missing while hiking Mount Liamuiga in St. Kitts has been found dead, bringing a tragic end to a major search and rescue operation that lasted nearly a week.

Mount Liamuiga, St Kitts

Wang Zyuan disappeared on 27th May 2026 after becoming lost on the popular hiking trail that leads to the summit of the Caribbean island’s dormant stratovolcano. Authorities confirmed on 1st June 2026 that his body had been located by one of the search teams.

“It is with deep regret that the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF) confirms that Mr Wang Zyuan, who had been missing on the Mt. Liamuiga trail since Wednesday, May 27th, 2026, was located deceased on Monday, June 1st, 2026, by one of the search teams,” the police force said in a statement shared on social media.

Investigators are now working to determine the circumstances surrounding Wang’s death.

The incident began when Wang reportedly contacted emergency services at approximately 2 pm local time on 27th May after becoming disoriented on the mountain. However, communication with first responders was quickly lost, leaving search crews with limited information about his exact whereabouts.

Questions also remain about Wang’s connection to the cruise industry. Authorities have not formally confirmed whether he was travelling as a passenger or working as a crew member aboard a cruise ship visiting the island that day.

Cruise tracking records indicate that Royal Caribbean’s Rhapsody of the Seas was the only cruise vessel docked in Basseterre on 27th May. Royal Caribbean has not publicly identified Wang as an employee, although photographs circulating online appear to show him wearing a name badge.

Extensive Search Operation Across Difficult Terrain

The search effort involved multiple agencies and volunteer groups who spent days navigating the challenging mountain terrain in the hope of locating Wang alive.

Personnel from the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force, the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force, the St. Kitts-Nevis Fire and Rescue Services, the Police Training School, the Forest Unit, the Red Cross, the Ross University K9 Unit and community volunteers all participated in the operation.

Missing Poster Rhapsody of the Seas

Search teams combed the heavily forested slopes of Mount Liamuiga daily while also deploying technology, including mobile phone location data, in an attempt to narrow down Wang’s position.

“Since May 27th, joint teams from the RSCNPF, the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force, the St. Kitts-Nevis Fire and Rescue Services, the Police Training School, the Forest Unit, the Red Cross, the Ross University K9 Unit, and dedicated community volunteers have searched the mountain daily,” the police force stated.

“We are profoundly grateful to every person who gave their time and effort to this operation.”

Although rescuers were unable to save Wang, authorities noted that the recovery of his body provides answers for his family and loved ones after days of uncertainty.

Hiking Accidents Have Claimed Other Cruise Guests

The tragedy is the latest in a series of hiking-related incidents involving cruise travellers in recent years.

In October 2025, an 81-year-old passenger died on Australia’s Lizard Island after becoming separated from her Coral Expeditions vessel during an excursion. The woman had been attempting the demanding hike to Cook’s Look but did not make it back to the ship, with her absence reportedly going unnoticed until later.

Earlier in 2025, another cruise passenger was found dead after disappearing from Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Bliss while visiting Juneau, Alaska. Searchers eventually located the guest approximately 1,700 feet below the ridge line of a hiking trail in July.

Just two months later, another serious hiking accident occurred near Juneau when two cruise passengers fell from a separate trail. One man survived the fall while the other lost his life.

The latest incident serves as another reminder of the risks associated with strenuous hiking excursions, particularly in unfamiliar destinations where weather conditions, difficult terrain and limited communication can quickly turn a routine outing into an emergency.

Carnival Unveils Major Half Moon Cay Upgrade As New Pier Welcomes Larger Ships

Carnival Cruise Line has officially completed a major redevelopment of RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay, marking the biggest changes to the private Bahamian destination since it first opened nearly 30 years ago.

RelaxAway Half Moon Cay

The cruise line celebrated the completion of the project on 1st June 2026 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy. The extensive upgrade introduces new guest facilities, expanded beachfront amenities and, most notably, a new pier that enables larger ships to call at the island.

The development addresses one of Half Moon Cay’s most significant operational limitations. Previously, many guests had to be transferred ashore by tender boats, which could be affected by weather and sea conditions. With the new pier now operational, ships can dock directly at the destination, allowing more vessels to visit and improving the overall guest experience.

Among the biggest beneficiaries are Carnival’s Excel-class ships, including Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee, which were previously unable to make regular calls because of tendering restrictions.

New Amenities Added Across The Island

Guests arriving at RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay will find a range of new facilities designed to enhance beach days on the island.

The expanded beachfront now includes additional complimentary loungers and umbrellas, alongside upgraded premium options such as cabanas and daybeds for visitors seeking a more private retreat.

Guests relaxing away by the new cabanas at RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay

Several new food and beverage venues have also opened as part of the redevelopment. Orchid Beach Grill and Hibiscus Beach Grill now serve buffet-style meals, while Luna Tide Beach Bar, Stay Awhile Beach Shack and Lil’ Tiki Bar provide additional locations for drinks and light refreshments throughout the day.

Transportation around the island has also been improved. A new tram system helps guests move between key areas, while the newly introduced Papaya Pathway offers a scenic walking route for those wishing to explore on foot.

Carnival also completed enhancements on sections of the island’s south side, including refreshed design features and upgrades to existing dining and beverage facilities.

Speaking during the opening celebrations, Duffy said: “RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay’s natural beauty has always made it a favorite for our guests and with the new pier, more ships can now easily access this incredible destination.”

Stay Awhile Beach Shack at RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay

She added: “We’re excited that more guests than ever will be able to experience the stunning beachfront and turquoise waters.”

The first ship to utilise the completed facilities was Carnival Sunrise, which arrived at 8 am on 1st June before departing later that afternoon.

Additional calls followed immediately, with Carnival Sunshine scheduled to arrive from Norfolk on 2nd June, while Carnival Dream and Carnival Pride were due to visit on 3rd June from Miami and Baltimore respectively.

Private Destination Investments Continue To Accelerate

The completion of the Half Moon Cay expansion comes as cruise operators continue investing heavily in private destinations throughout the Caribbean.

While competitors such as Norwegian Cruise Line have been expanding Great Stirrup Cay and Royal Caribbean International has successfully developed its Perfect Day at CocoCay concept, Half Moon Cay has long been considered one of the pioneers of the modern private island experience.

Located on Little San Salvador Island, the destination opened in December 1997 after being developed by Holland America Line. It quickly became known for its expansive white-sand beaches and relatively untouched natural environment.

Today, the destination is shared by several brands within Carnival Corporation & plc, including Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises and Holland America Line. According to Carnival, 22 ships across its fleet currently call at the destination from homeports throughout the United States.

The redevelopment forms part of Carnival Corporation’s broader Paradise Collection portfolio, which includes Celebration Key on Grand Bahama, opened in 2025, and Mahogany Bay in Honduras.

Plans to modernise Half Moon Cay were first announced in 2024, with the company stressing that improvements would be made while preserving the natural character that has made the island one of the Caribbean’s most popular cruise destinations.

Costa Maya Port Protest Forces Excursion Cancellations For Royal Caribbean Passengers

A labour dispute at Costa Maya left Royal Caribbean passengers facing cancelled shore excursions and significant disruption on 1st June 2026 after workers blocked the main access route to the popular Mexican cruise destination.

Guests arriving aboard Mariner of the Seas and Enchantment of the Seas expected a routine port call in Mahahual, with many planning excursions to local beaches, archaeological sites and other attractions along Mexico’s Caribbean coastline. Instead, passengers found themselves stranded on tour buses or informed that their excursions would no longer go ahead.

Costa Maya

Local reports indicated that demonstrators blocked the principal road serving the cruise port, preventing vehicles and workers from entering or exiting the area. While cruise ships were still able to dock as scheduled, transportation throughout the port zone was severely affected.

Mariner of the Seas arrived from Galveston at 7 am, followed by Enchantment of the Seas from Tampa at 8 am. However, many guests were unable to leave the port area due to the blockade.

One passenger described the situation, saying: “Sat on a bus till 9:30 only to be told all excursions were cancelled. Couple of the locals told us it was because there were some workers on strike blocking the port exit.”

Costa Maya remains one of the busiest cruise destinations in the Western Caribbean and regularly welcomes ships from Royal Caribbean, Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC Cruises and Disney Cruise Line.

The demonstration focused on road access to the port rather than cruise operations themselves, but the disruption still had a direct impact on visiting passengers and local tour providers.

Workers Demand Outstanding Payments

According to local reports, the protest was linked to claims that workers have not received profit-sharing payments following Royal Caribbean’s takeover of the Port of Mahahual in 2025.

Demonstrators reportedly organised the blockade to draw attention to their demands and increase pressure on the company.

Mariner of the Seas

The latest incident follows a separate protest earlier in 2026 when local residents blocked access roads while calling for infrastructure improvements in the surrounding community.

In response to those concerns, Royal Caribbean announced additional investment towards road improvement projects in Nuevo Mahahual.

At the time, Royal Caribbean Mexico President Ari Adler said: “Royal Caribbean is proud to support the well-being and development of Nuevo Mahahual. We consider ourselves a neighbor in this community, independent of any tourism project.”

The cruise line has not publicly commented on the latest labour dispute.

Growing Challenges For Royal Caribbean’s Costa Maya Vision

The protest comes during a period of increasing opposition to Royal Caribbean’s long-term development plans in Mahahual.

After assuming control of Costa Maya in 2025, the company unveiled plans for Perfect Day Mexico, a major private destination development covering approximately 230 acres. The project was intended to become Royal Caribbean’s largest destination investment, featuring attractions, beaches, pools and exclusive experiences for cruise passengers.

However, the proposal has faced criticism from local residents, community organisations and environmental groups concerned about the potential impact on the region’s ecosystems and infrastructure.

Those concerns resulted in a significant setback on 19th May 2026 when Mexico’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources rejected Royal Caribbean’s environmental proposal for the project.

Although the labour dispute appears unrelated to the environmental objections surrounding Perfect Day Mexico, both developments highlight the growing tensions facing Royal Caribbean as it seeks to expand its footprint in Costa Maya.

The industry will now be watching closely to see whether the disruption continues. Royal Caribbean’s Radiance of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas are scheduled to call at Costa Maya on 3rd and 4th June respectively, raising questions over whether future passengers could encounter similar issues if the dispute remains unresolved.

Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas is Back Sailing After Major Changes in 5-Week Dry Dock

Royal Caribbean’s second Freedom-class ship is now back carrying passengers after a 5-week dry dock that gave the ship some major upgrades.

During her dry dock in France, Liberty of the Seas received her Royal Amplification which included a new pool deck, several new restaurants and bars, an updated spa and fitness center, and other enhancements that are giving the ship that fresh new vibe.

liberty of the seas Royal Caribbean

In April, Cruise Fever reported that three Royal Caribbean ships would be in dry dock at the same time: Ovation of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, and Liberty of the Seas.

Following the mid-May return of Harmony of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas has officially wrapped up its stay in Brest, France, making it the final ship to emerge from dry dock and start carrying passengers again.

Pictures of the Newly Renovated Liberty of the Seas:

What’s IN and What’s OUT

To make room for these upgrades, several public spaces were completely transformed. Here is a look at what was added and what had to go to make it happen:

  • IN: The Royal Escape Room / OUT: The Connoisseur Club – The cigar lounge on Deck 5 is gone, making way for a brand-new, high-tech puzzle concept. Royal Caribbean creates some amazing escape rooms, so I can’t wait to check this one out.
  • IN: Izumi Teppanyaki / OUT: Sabor Modern Mexican – The specialty Mexican spot on Deck 4 was swapped out for Izumi, bringing the crowd-favorite dinner-and-a-show hibachi experience to Royal Caribbean cruisers who truly love this eatery.
  • IN: Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen – Italian dining gets a minor tweak on board as Giovanni’s Table gets replaced with the newer Italian concept.
  • IN: Starbucks – The Royal Promenade finally features a standalone, full-service Starbucks, making those early morning disembarkations a little more bearable. This replaces Boleros lounge.
  • IN: El Loco Fresh – While Sabor was removed, fans of Mexican flavors can still get their fix at El Loco Fresh, which is a complimentary poolside spot serving up quick burritos and tacos.
  • IN: New Photo & Shore Excursions Area / OUT: On Air – The ship’s dedicated On Air lounge was removed to create a completely modernized photo and excursion hub.

Reimagined Pool Deck and Space Refreshes

Up on deck, cruisers will immediately notice a new resort-style pool deck vibe. The pool deck has been redesigned with a Caribbean-style, multi-level bar: The Lime & Coconut.

The entire area has been refreshed with vibrant colors and private casitas available for rent.

Inside the ship, the Casino Royale layout received a refresh to update the overall gaming layout.

For guests looking to either relax or work out during their cruise, the Vitality Spa and Fitness Center was refreshed with new equipment and modernized treatment rooms. The kids and teens spaces also received an upgrade with a completely redesigned youth program layout.

68 Brand New Staterooms Added

Royal Caribbean also added 68 brand-new staterooms to the ship. This was achieved by repurposing a few other spaces that were not used as much, including the former card room and conference center.

Sections of the youth areas and spa spaces were also reconfigured to fit the new cabins, adding more capacity to the ship for its summer season.

Prior to the ship’s recent drydock, Liberty of the Seas was listed with a capacity of 3,798 at double occupancy and 4,960 at maximum capacity.

Current Liberty of the Seas Itinerary

Fresh out of dry dock, the amplified vessel has officially kicked off its European summer season. Liberty of the Seas departed Southampton, England on May 31 for a 7-day, round-trip Spain and Portugal cruise.

The ship is currently at sea making its way to Vigo, Spain, followed by stops in Lisbon, Portugal, and Bilbao, Spain, before returning to Southampton on June 7.

“RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay’s natural beauty has always made it a favorite for our guests, and with the new pier, more ships can now easily access this incredible destination. We’re excited that more guests than ever will be able to experience the stunning beachfront and turquoise waters.”

A total of 22 Carnival cruise ships are currently scheduled to visit the expanded Half Moon Cay.
