MSC Euribia is Back on the Map: Red Sea Route Confirmed

I’ve been refreshing the cruise map for MSC Euribia every day for the past 5 days.  It’s been “off the radar” so to speak since the dramatic crossing of the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, April 18.

The “dark” period wasn’t really unexpected. While the Strait of Hormuz was the first major obstacle, the transit into the Red Sea through the Bab al-Mandab Strait was another concern for the crew.

Turning off the AIS (Automatic Identification System) transponder was a standard tactical move to reduce the ship’s digital footprint while passing through these waters.

But today, MSC Euribia is trackable once again and its heading is confirmed.

The Timeline

The captain of MSC Euribia made a powerful and emotional social media post after clearing the Strait of Hormuz, explaining what it was like in the moment.  In retrospect, the window that six cruise ships took advantage of to cross through this volatile channel is really incredible.

Here is a timeline for the MSC ship that began almost a week ago.

  • April 17, 2026: Departure from Dubai – The ship cleared Port Rashid to begin its massive repositioning voyage.
  • April 18, 2026: The Strait of Hormuz – Euribia successfully navigated the first major chokepoint of the trip.
  • April 18–22: The “Dark” Period – AIS was disabled for security as the ship transited the Gulf of Aden and the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
  • April 23, 2026: Red Sea Reappearance – The ship is officially back on the radar, cruising at around 16 knots toward the Suez Canal.

Ships Clear the Persian Gulf

Euribia isn’t the only ship that made its move out of the Persian Gulf. A brief ceasefire window allowed a total of six cruise ships that had been stranded in the Persian Gulf since February to finally leave their ports.

Joining Euribia in repositioning sailings are:

  • Celestyal Discovery & Celestyal Journey: Both cleared the Strait of Hormuz on April 17/18.  Discovery is aiming for a May 1 restart in Lavrion for its Greek Islands sailings.
  • Mein Schiff 4 & Mein Schiff 5: TUI’s vessels departed from Abu Dhabi and Doha, respectively, and are now moving toward the Mediterranean, both looking to sail around South Africa before heading North.  Last check has them sailing close together, just East of Tanzania
  • Aroya Manara: The final ship to clear the Strait on April 19, now heading toward the Gulf of Aden.

Looking Ahead

The best part of this development? The summer season is officially back on track. Because the ship made better time than initially feared, MSC Cruises has reinstated the sailings that were previously cancelled.

  • May 16, 2026: MSC Euribia will resume its Northern Europe program with a 7-night sailing from Kiel, Germany (current prices on MSC’s website start at $486 per person).
  • May 17, 2026: The ship will begin its round-trip rotations from Copenhagen, Denmark.

The ship is currently covering an 8,300-mile repositioning voyage. Once it clears the Suez Canal, it will head through the Mediterranean and around the Iberian Peninsula to reach its summer home in the Baltics.

If you were one of the guests whose mid-May sailings were in limbo, check your email. MSC is now reaching out to confirm that these voyages will proceed as planned.

Philadelphia Welcomes Back 2,300 Passengers, Ending a 15-Year Cruise Gap

The last time a cruise ship sailed from Philadelphia was in 2011. Today, for the first time in 15 years, passengers are returning to the port.

More than 2,300 passengers are now back from their 7-day sailing that left the port on April 16, 2026.

Norwegian Jewel back in Philadelphia

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Jewel pulled into PhilaPort around 5:30 AM Thursday.

Normally, the worst day for a cruiser is disembarkation day, so it’s no cause for celebration.  But for the “City of Brotherly Love”, it means the first passengers have returned from a successful Bermuda sailing and cruising is back!  It also means that the next group of cruisers are ready to begin their sailing today.

The 93,502 gross ton ship spent two days at Kings Wharf, Bermuda before spending a day in Charleston, SC and heading back home.

From now until the end of August, Norwegian Jewel will be offering weekly 7-day Bermuda cruises that all make a stop in historic Charleston.

Contrary to common belief, yes, the cruise port in Charleston is still being used, just not as a starting point for cruises after the Carnival contract expired.

While the return of cruising is a big win for the city’s economy, the first 2,300 passengers experienced the “growing pains” of a port still in transition.

As Cruise Fever previously reported, construction delays at the main terminal meant that passengers actually had to check in at a nearby Clarion Hotel rather than at the port itself.

On social media, passengers said that the logistics remained a bit “makeshift” as the city works to get the permanent facilities online. One Facebook user described the final steps of their journey, noting they had the option of “going back to the Clarion or get on a bus from the pier to the airport.”

Despite a port that’s still in progress, the sentiment among travelers remained positive.

After 15 years of waiting, the convenience of sailing from the Delaware River outweighed the lack of a finished terminal.

As one traveler shared on Facebook upon their return: “It’s been a week on this beautiful old ship Norwegian Jewel.“

Toddler Hospitalised After Cruise Ship Fall In Madeira

A two-year-old child was taken to hospital after falling aboard the cruise ship Mein Schiff 7 while it was docked in Funchal on 22nd April 2026, prompting an emergency response from local medical teams.

According to Portuguese media reports, the child fell from a height estimated to be between 6 and 10 feet while the vessel was alongside in port. Emergency responders arrived to find the child conscious and already receiving care from the ship’s onboard medical team, with his mother by his side.

Mein Schiff 7 Image

Madeira’s Integrated Medical Emergency System dispatched its Rapid Intervention Medical Team, known as EMIR, along with an ambulance directly to the ship. After an initial assessment onboard, the child was transferred ashore and taken to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital for further checks.

Cruise line TUI Cruises later confirmed the incident, stating the injuries were not serious.

“We can confirm an incident on Mein Schiff 7 in Madeira involving a child. However, the child was never in a critical condition, nor did it have life-threatening injuries. It was in hospital for routine observation, though the child is in good condition and with family members,”

Portuguese port authority APRAM also confirmed the incident occurred while the ship was docked, adding that it took place within the vessel itself.

Investigation Ongoing Into Cause Of Fall

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fall. While there has been some speculation that the child may have fallen from a balcony, this has not been officially confirmed.

The incident occurred during a seven-night itinerary that began in Gran Canaria on 20th April 2026. After a day at sea, the ship arrived in Funchal at 7am on 22nd April for an overnight stay. The situation did not affect the vessel’s schedule, with departure planned for 23rd April.

The 3,984-passenger ship, which entered service in June 2024, is scheduled to continue its voyage with calls to ports including Santa Cruz de La Palma, Tenerife and Fuerteventura before returning to Gran Canaria on 27th April.

Previous Incidents Across The Fleet

While rare, this is not the first serious incident involving ships operated by TUI Cruises.

On 14th October 2022, a passenger died after falling from a balcony aboard Mein Schiff 6 during a voyage in the Aegean Sea. Reports indicated the individual fell multiple decks from Deck 10 onto a lifeboat area below.

More recently, in November 2025, a 76-year-old passenger was reported missing after going overboard from Marella Explorer 2 near the Canary Islands. A search operation was launched by Spanish authorities, but the individual was not found.

Investigations into the latest incident in Madeira remain ongoing, though early indications suggest the child is recovering well following the fall.

Why Travel Memes Feel So Accurate

Travel is often shown as a series of perfect moments — beautiful views, smooth flights, and effortless adventures. But real travel is rarely that simple. Delays, unexpected situations, and small inconveniences are part of almost every trip.

That’s exactly why travel humor resonates with so many people.

The Reality Behind Every Trip

Even the most carefully planned journeys include surprises. Flights get delayed, luggage goes missing, and directions rarely make sense in a new place. These situations can be frustrating in the moment but often become funny memories later.

A well-made travel meme captures these shared experiences in a simple and relatable way.

Why Everyone Relates to Travel Humor

Travel memes work because they highlight universal situations. It doesn’t matter where you’re from or where you’re going — most travelers have experienced the same challenges. From overpacking to struggling with time zones, these moments are easy to recognize.

Humor creates a sense of connection between people who may have completely different travel styles.

Turning Problems Into Stories

Many of the best travel stories come from things that didn’t go as planned. Getting lost in a new city or missing a connection can feel stressful at first, but these moments often become highlights when looking back.

Memes help turn those situations into something lighter and easier to share.

The Balance Between Expectation and Reality

Social media often shows only the best parts of travel. Memes, on the other hand, reveal the full picture. They remind people that travel is not about perfection, but about experience.

This balance makes travel feel more honest and approachable.

Laughing Through the Journey

Travel is not always smooth, but that’s part of what makes it memorable. By finding humor in unexpected moments, travelers can enjoy the journey more fully. Sometimes, the funniest situations are the ones that stay with us the longest.

How a 22-Year-Old Cruise Ship Keeps Scoring Perfect 100s with the CDC

You might think that only brand-new, state-of-the-art, fresh-out-of-the-shipyard cruise ships ace their CDC health scores. But there’s one ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet that has earned multiple perfect 100s in just the last few years.

Jewel of the Seas out to Sea
Royal Caribbean’s Jewel of the Seas keeps scoring perfect or near perfect scores with CDC health inspections.

While doing some research on the sanitation scores on cruise ships over recent years, one ship really stood out.

I looked at 5 years’ worth of VSP (Vessel Sanitation Program) numbers, which involved 723 inspections.  While several cruise ships scored a perfect 100 during that time, Royal Caribbean’s Jewel of the Seas, had done it three times just since 2023.

This Radiance-class vessel launched back in 2004. At 22 years old in 2026, it’s one of the older ships still regularly sailing for Royal Caribbean.

But the team on board this 2,100-passenger ship are dialed in.

There’s a pattern here.  These are the recent scores for the ship’s CDC Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) inspections:

  • January 17, 2026: 99
  • September 12, 2025: 100
  • April 29, 2025: 97
  • September 28, 2024: 100
  • April 5, 2024: 97
  • September 14, 2023: 100
  • November 19, 2022: 97

Three perfect scores in roughly two years is impressive for any ship. For a vessel that’s been around for more than two decades? It stands out even more.

A Legacy of Cleanliness

This made me dig back even further than just five years.  I looked at every score the ship has received since it came into service in 2004.

The results? Not only did the ship score a perfect 100 during its first year, but it had racked up 14 perfect scores in a total of 37 inspections.

The average health score for Jewel of the Seas is 97.24 during its lifetime.

That doesn’t happen by accident. And more work than most cruise passengers can even imagine goes into having that kind of track record.

What Does a Perfect 100 Actually Mean?

The CDC’s VSP inspections are unannounced and happen when the ship is in a U.S. port, which is usually about twice a year.

Inspectors board and spend several hours going over the vessel with a fine-tooth comb. The ship starts with 100 points, and every major issue cost points.

Inspectors check everything that could affect passenger and crew health.

The eight main areas they look at include:

  • Medical facilities
  • Potable (drinking) water systems
  • Recreational water facilities (pools and hot tubs)
  • Galleys, food preparation, and dining areas
  • Child activity centers
  • Cabins and housekeeping
  • Ventilation systems and common areas
  • Pest control and general sanitation

If you’re a cruise nerd like me, maybe you have read some of the health reports.  They make me feel like a complete slob after seeing how many details are taken into account.

Even a fly in an area it isn’t supposed to be can draw the ire of an inspector.

They’re not just looking for obvious dirt. They check food storage temperatures, handwashing stations, chemical concentrations in dishwashers, proper labeling of items, backflow prevention on water lines, chlorine levels in the pools, and even documentation logs.

The details matter.

A faded handwashing sign might draw a comment (I just read this in a health inspection report yesterday).

A refrigerator that’s a degree too warm or a missing label on a cleaning bottle, can lead to some scratching on a clipboard.

These aren’t usually major health hazards on their own, but they show whether the crew is staying on top of every detail, every single day.

When Jewel scored 100 three times in a few years, it meant the inspectors found nothing noteworthy.

How Does an Older Ship Pull This Off?

Jewel of the Seas isn’t brand new with all the latest equipment. Older ships can have more wear on plumbing, galleys, and other systems, which makes consistent perfection harder.

What has helped the ship stay so clean?

  • Routine maintenance: Jewel went into dry dock in May 2024 in Brest, France, for technical work (azipods, thrusters, stabilizers), hull painting, and general upkeep. Royal has kept up with these refreshes over the years, even if it hasn’t had one of the big “Amplified” overhauls some sisters received.
  • Crew habits and training: A perfect score doesn’t happen because of one person. It takes the whole team.  The galley staff, housekeeping, food and beverage, and deck crew are the real heroes of the story.  It’s day in and day out. Proper handwashing, temperature logging, sanitizing schedules, and pest control all have to be second nature.
  • Leadership continuity: Captain rotations happen on all ships, but here’s who was in command during the recent perfect inspections (based on available rotation info):
    • September 14, 2023: Captain Trond Holm (he started his contract in August 2023 and was aboard for that Greenland sailing period).
    • September 28, 2024: Captain Michael Lindberg (handling late summer/early fall sailings).
    • September 12, 2025: Captain Michael Lindberg (still on rotation for the short Bahamas itinerary).

Standards stayed high even with different captains.  Cleanliness looks like it’s part of the culture on Jewel.

Royal Caribbean as a cruise line also deserves some credit. They’ve had several ships hit 100 in recent years, including two of the oldest ships in the fleet: Enchantment of the Seas and Grandeur of the Seas.

Other Ships with More than Two 100s in Last 5 Years

For perspective, other ships that scored multiple 100s recently are much younger.  These ships all scored two or more perfect scores in the last half-decade.

  • Oceania Vista: 3 years old (4 perfect scores)
  • Explora I: 3 years old (3 perfect scores)
  • Disney Wish: 4 years old (3 perfect scores)
  • Disney Fantasy: 14 years old  (3 perfect scores with one 98)
  • Norwegian Bliss: 8 years old (3 perfect scores)

I should note that Oceania Vista has ONLY scored perfect 100s.  It’s like that student in 10th grade that just doesn’t know what it’s like to have a point taken off a test. Except, it’s annoying in high school and it’s impressive in this case.

Why Newer Isn’t Always “Cleaner”

I say “cleaner” in quotes because some of the deductions on the VSP scorecard are for details more related to organization than cleanliness.

Newer ships start with fresher systems, but those systems take time to learn.  If you’ve ever been on a cruise ship’s very first sailing, you know there are always a few hiccups along the way.

There are always growing pains with a new ship, especially if it’s an entirely new class of ship.  So, sometimes points are taken off for issues that are easily fixed later on.

That being said, brand-new ships have definitely scored perfect 100s as well.

What This Means for Cruisers

At the end of the day, no ship is immune to occasional issues, and outbreaks can still happen despite high scores.

Good hand hygiene from passengers helps too.  Yes, we have a role to play in the sanitation game as well, even if you’re still trying to get that “washy washy” song out of your head.

I love sailing on older ships.  After taking a cruise on Enchantment of the Seas a while ago I was reminded of the charm and refined simplicity of an older ship.

Jewel of the Seas proves that a well-maintained 22-year-old ship can deliver cleanliness results.  A big round of applause to the crew of the ship, working tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure you have an amazing vacation.

Royal Caribbean Launches $30 Early Assign Pilot To Reveal Guarantee Cabins Sooner

Passengers booking guarantee staterooms with Royal Caribbean can now pay to secure earlier clarity on their cabin location, as the cruise line rolls out a new pilot programme called “Early Assign”.

The optional upgrade, priced at $30 per stateroom, allows guests to receive their cabin assignment within 24 hours of making their final payment.

Independence of the Seas Interior Cabin

The initiative is designed to address one of the most common frustrations with guarantee bookings, where travellers can otherwise wait until just days before embarkation, or even the day of sailing, to learn where they will be staying.

Guarantee fares remain one of the cheapest ways to cruise, often undercutting the cost of selecting a specific cabin by hundreds of dollars. However, that saving comes with uncertainty over both cabin location and assignment timing.

How The Early Assign Pilot Works

The Early Assign option becomes available at the point of final payment and is currently being trialled on selected sailings. At present, the programme is limited to US bookings and applies only within defined pre-sailing windows.

For shorter itineraries of five nights or less, guests can opt in between 30 and 60 days before departure. For voyages lasting six nights or longer, the window extends from 50 to 80 days before sailing.

Once the fee is paid and the balance is settled, the assigned stateroom is confirmed within 24 business hours.

Adventure of the Seas Ocean View

The pilot covers a range of guarantee categories, including codes such as WS, XB, XQ, XN, NQ, YO, YQ, ZI and ZQ, spanning interior, oceanview, balcony and suite options.

Importantly, guests who receive their assignment through Early Assign can request a different cabin within the same category at no extra cost, provided alternatives are still available. While this flexibility is not exclusive to the programme, receiving an earlier assignment increases the likelihood that other cabins remain unsold and open for changes.

The $30 fee applies per stateroom rather than per guest and is strictly non-refundable, even if the cruise is later cancelled. The option is not available on casino fares and may be restricted when combined with certain promotions.

Why Royal Caribbean Is Testing Early Assign

The introduction of Early Assign reflects ongoing efforts by Royal Caribbean to refine the balance between value and certainty for its passengers.

While many travellers are happy to accept a lower fare in exchange for flexibility, others find the waiting period for cabin allocation frustrating. In some cases, assignments can take weeks or months to appear, creating uncertainty right up to departure.

There is also a wider industry backdrop to consider. Oversold sailings have occasionally led to cruise lines offering incentives for guests to change plans shortly before departure. In rare scenarios, those without assigned cabins could be most vulnerable if capacity issues arise.

By offering earlier confirmation, Royal Caribbean may be aiming to reassure guests while still promoting its lower-cost guarantee fares.

Whether the fee represents good value will depend on the traveller. Those unconcerned about cabin location may see little benefit, while guests seeking peace of mind, or hoping to secure a better-positioned cabin within their category, may find the added cost worthwhile.

Carnival Cruise Line Rolling Out New Dinner Menu to More Ships

Carnival Cruise Line is testing a new dinner menu on several of their cruise ships and they are slowly rolling it out to more vessels each week.

Carnival cruise ship in Miami

Carnival’s Brand Ambassador John Heald gave an update on the rollout of the new dinner menu this morning during his “3-minute”, usually 8-10 minutes, daily video.

Heald said that Carnival cruisers are massively excited about the new menu and Carnival is tweaking it based on feedback from guests.

So far, the new dinner menu is on the following Carnival cruise ships:

  • Carnival Magic
  • Carnival Liberty
  • Carnival Panorama
  • Carnival Jubilee
  • Mardi Gras
  • Carnival Sunshine
  • Carnival Pride (starting this week)
Carnival's chocolate melting Cake
Carnival Cruise Line’s popular Chocolate Melting Cake.

Next week, the new menu will debut on Carnival Spirit. When will the rest of the fleet get the new menu?

Heald went on to say that he will give more updates as it rolls out to new ships. He’s hoping to have another update next week.

One of the reasons why the new menus haven’t rolled out to all ships is that Carnival is testing the menus, seeing what guests like, and tweaking it based on comments they receive.

Heald said that the comments so far have been “absolutely fabulous”.

Cruise Fever will have all updates on this new menu as Carnival rolls them out to other ships in their fleet.

For $30, Royal Caribbean Will Assign Your Guarantee Cabin Faster

If you book guarantee cabins on cruises to save money, Royal Caribbean is introducing a new way where you get your cabin assignment quicker than before.

Royal Caribbean ships

Guarantee cabins are the cheapest cabins in each category on cruise ships. They are a great way to saving money, although you can’t choose the exact cabin location like you can with other cruise fares.

Cruise lines assign you an exact cabin, usually just days before your cruise, in the category you booked. You have no control over which deck or the location of your stateroom around the ship.

Royal Caribbean’s Early Assign

Royal Caribbean has introduced a new program called Early Assign. Early Assign has a $30 fee, per cabin, and allows you to receive your cabin assignment much faster than usual.

One of the great perks of Early Assign is that you can switch to another open cabin in your category if there is availability. If Royal Caribbean assigns your cabin right under the pool deck or in another noisy part of the ship, you can move to a different location for no additional cost, as long as it’s in the same category.

Travel agents can contact Trade Support & Service at 800-327-6700 to assist their clients with an early room assignment through Early Assign.

How Does Early Assign Work?

Early Assign is an optional paid program available at final payment. The program is currently only available to U.S. bookings during specific pre-sailing windows.

The stateroom assignment is confirmed immediately after you make the $30 payment, per cabin. This gives you as much time as possible to move to any other empty cabins in your category that are in a better location.

The program is good on eligible GTY categories including WS, XB, XQ, XN, NQ, YO, YQ, ZI, and ZQ. You can not use the program with casino fares.

For cruises six nights or longer, the offer window is 50–80 days before sailing. For sailings five nights or fewer, the offer window is 30–60 days before sailing.

The $30 payment for Early Assign is non-refundable, regardless of cancellation.
