Viking Floats Out Its Newest Nile River Ships

Viking® (NYSE: VIK) has announced its two newest ships for the Nile River—the Viking Ptah and the Viking Sekhmet—have been “floated out,” marking a major construction milestone and the first time the ships have touched water. Set to debut in September and November 2026, respectively, the Viking Ptah and the Viking Sekhmet will join the company’s growing fleet of state-of-the-art ships in Egypt and will sail Viking’s popular 12-day Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary.

“Egypt is truly a phenomenal destination, distinguished by its remarkable history, enduring culture, and the singular power of the Nile,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman and CEO of Viking. “With the float out of our two newest ships, we look forward to further expanding our elegant fleet on the Nile and welcoming more curious travelers to experience this extraordinary region in the years to come.”

The traditional float-out ceremonies for the Viking Ptah and the Viking Sekhmet took place at Massara shipyard in Cairo and are significant because they mark each ship’s transition into the final stage of construction. The ships will now be moved to a nearby outfitting dock for final construction and interior build-out.

Viking’s Growing Egypt Fleet

The state-of-the-art Viking Ptah and Viking Sekhmet are the newest sister ships in Viking’s Egypt fleet, which also includes the Viking Osiris, the Viking Aton, the Viking Sobek, the Viking Hathor, the Viking Amun, and the Viking Thoth. Owned and operated by Viking, each ship hosts 82 guests in 41 staterooms and features several aspects familiar to Viking guests, such as a space-saving square bow, an indoor/outdoor Aquavit Terrace and elegant Scandinavian design. Together, they represent the most modern sister ships sailing the Nile River.

Viking’s Pharaohs & Pyramids Itinerary

During the 12-day Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary, guests begin with a three-night stay at a first-class hotel in Cairo, where they can visit iconic sites, such as the Great Pyramids of Giza, the necropolis of Sakkara, the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, or the Grand Egyptian Museum. Accompanied by a Viking Egyptologist, guests then fly to Luxor, where they visit the Temples of Luxor and Karnak and begin an eight-day round-trip voyage on the Nile River. The sailing features a visit to the tomb of Tutankhamen in the Valley of the Kings and excursions to the Temple of Khnum in Esna, the Dendera Temple complex in Qena, the temples at Abu Simbel and the High Dam in Aswan, as well as the opportunity to visit a colorful Nubian village, where guests can experience a traditional elementary school. Finally, the journey concludes with a flight back to Cairo for a final night in the ancient city.

Charleston Just Welcomed Its Largest Cruise Ship Ever: Virgin’s 110,000-Ton Valiant Lady

On Friday, April 3, Virgin Voyages’ Valiant Lady docked at Union Pier in Charleston, SC and brought over 2,700 travelers into the historic city.  We checked the records and discovered that this is the largest cruise ship to ever dock in Charleston.

Valiant Lady in Charleston
Local travel expert Maureen Adams was on-site to capture several exclusive images and videos of the ship’s historic arrival. Photo used with permission from Maureen Adams of Adams Luxury Travel. More photos below.

The ship arrived around 8:00 AM and departed at 5:00 PM, but it didn’t take long for residents to notice the massive white and red cruise ship docked at the terminal which was once used by Carnival Cruise Line.

In fact, some people on social media were surprised to see the ship using Charleston’s dock, with one digital creator in the Charleston area posting a picture of the ship with the caption, “What do we have here… a cruise ship docked in Charleston again?”

At 110,000 gross tons and 912 feet in length, Valiant Lady is the largest cruise ship by gross tonnage (a measurement of volume) to ever visit Charleston’s cruise terminal.

The adults-only vessel carries up to 2,770 passengers and about 1,160 crew members, bringing thousands of visitors to explore the Holy City’s historic sites, shops, and restaurants.

For comparison, Carnival Sunshine, which called Charleston home for years, is a 102,853 gross ton ship that carries over 3,000 passengers.

Union Pier has never seen a ship this large before in terms of sheer volume.

Charleston’s Farewell to Carnival

This record-breaking visit follows a major turning point for the port. Carnival Cruise Line operated as a homeport in Charleston for roughly 14 years, beginning in 2010.

The partnership started with smaller ships and eventually involved larger vessels like Sunshine, which offered regular sailings to The Bahamas and Caribbean destinations.

Carnival’s contract with the South Carolina Ports Authority officially ended at the start of 2025, and Sunshine made its final homeport departure from Charleston on December 30, 2024.

The ship did return for its last visit on January 5, 2025, and was then repositioned to Norfolk, Virginia.

To clear up any confusion, while Carnival is no longer homeporting a ship in Charleston, the port is still used as a port of call.  This means cruise ships will still visit the port as part of an itinerary, but no major cruise line is currently homeporting a vessel in the city.

In other words, cruises do not originate in Charleston any longer.

The Patriot’s Point Idea

After news of Carnival’s contract expiring spread, there was a local push to find another nearby location for cruise ships to still be able to access the area and retain jobs for hundreds of workers.

At one point, there was discussion about developing an alternative cruise terminal in the Mount Pleasant area (sometimes referred to in connection with Patriots Point or nearby sites).

But those ideas did not move forward, and Mount Pleasant officials ultimately rejected proposals for a new cruise terminal in the town.

Valiant Lady in Port

The visit of Valiant Lady made waves in town on Friday, and some travel agents and companies were able to tour the ship during its brief stay.

Maureen Adams of Adams Luxury Travel was able to explore the ship and grab some photos and videos of the vessel that you can see below:

Future of Charleston’s Port

Cruise activity at Union Pier is expected to dwindle more and more as redevelopment of the site is scheduled to begin next year.

Officials say the area will be used for waterfront space featuring public access, local businesses, and housing.

For now, visits like the one from the Valiant Lady keep the harbor active and provide some excitement for both land and cruise lovers alike.

Virgin Voyages even added a personal touch to its historic visit by using the ship’s balcony mood lighting to spell out ‘I [Heart] Charleston’ across the hull, a glowing tribute that could be seen reflecting off the harbor on Friday night.

Valiant Lady is currently on a 9-day sailing from San Juan that will finish in New York on April 6, 2026.  She is one of four vessels with Virgin Voyages and was just the second vessel to be built by the cruise line in 2021.

Carnival Horizon Forced to Slow Speeds Due to ‘Mechanical Issue’, Delayed in Miami Arrival

Carnival Cruise Line guests who are scheduled to sail on Carnival Horizon on April 5, 2026, are being told to arrive at the port 2 hours later than planned.

The cruise line has also informed passengers currently on the 4,000-guest vessel that an unspecified “mechanical issue” has made it necessary for the ship to slow its speed.

Carnival Horizon at sea cruise ship

This slower speed means the ship will arrive in PortMiami later than originally planned, giving current passengers an extra hour or so to enjoy their cruise vacation.

In a letter sent to passengers currently on board, the cruise line confirmed the issue, after an announcement was also made over the ship’s PA system.

“Our engineers are actively working to repair a minor mechanical issue, which requires us to reduce our speed slightly. As a result, we now expect to dock in Miami at 8:30 AM, a little later than originally scheduled,” the letter stated.

Logistics in Delays

While an extra couple of hours on a cruise might feel like a nice bonus at first, it also means that travel arrangements might need to be adjusted.  After all, an 11:00: AM flight home from MIA just became a nail-biter for those on board with tight travel plans.

Carnival’s letter also informed cruisers that Wi-Fi would be available to everyone on board so these arrangements can be taken care of.

The letter also stated that it could be presented to airline representatives to help with fees if flight changes were needed.

Recent Issues with Horizon

Carnival Horizon has had several mechanical issues over recent months.  Propulsion troubles and issues with maintaining cruising speeds delayed other cruises last year as well.

On social media, frequent cruisers have noted the ship’s recent technical difficulties, with one Facebook user saying, “Oh boy this again. It’s setting off ptsd from my November trip on this ship.”

Reports from past cruises in November 2025 and February 2026 describe similar speed restrictions that led to arrival delays of up to 8 hours and, in some cases, canceled port visits.

While a turbocharger on one of the engines was reportedly replaced in December 2025, today’s delay doesn’t give us a lot of details to go on.  It might not be related to the propulsion system at all.

Handling Delays

Delays happen.  It’s not unheard of.  But stories like this are good opportunities to make sure you are prepared for your next cruise should you experience a similar delay.  I always recommend having cruise travel insurance.  Not only will it cover things like flight delays and missed flights, but a good plan will also cover all of those extra things like the need to book a hotel, rental car, etc.  On top of this, you’ll just have some peace of mind that a delay won’t hurt you financially.

I know how one missed flight can lead to a domino effect of all kinds of extra expenses that you probably didn’t put into the cruise budget.

Additionally, keep up with all communications from the cruise line.  You can do this through Carnival’s Hub App, but the company will also send updates through email.  If the cruise line says to arrive at the port two hours later, follow this advice. If too many people arrive before the current passengers can get off the ship it just causes a massive traffic bottleneck that causes even more delays.

Looking Ahead

Horizon is currently maintaining its scheduled itineraries, so that’s good news so far.  The next cruise will depart Miami slightly behind schedule but nothing that would interfere with ports of call, at least not at this point.

The vessel is slotted to depart PortMiami on April 5 for a 6-day cruise that will visit Celebration Key, Ocho Rios, and Grand Cayman before returning back to Miami on April 11.

Carnival Horizon is scheduled for major maintenance in June 2026, where a permanent fix for the propulsion system is expected to be put into place.

Royal Caribbean Confirms Ship Swap As Freedom Of The Seas To Replace Mariner In Southampton For 2027

Royal Caribbean has confirmed a significant deployment change for 2027, with Freedom of the Seas set to take over Southampton sailings from Mariner of the Seas as part of a wider fleet reshuffle.

Freedom of the Seas

The move clarifies earlier cancellations affecting Mariner of the Seas, with the cruise line now confirming that the ship will be redeployed elsewhere while Freedom of the Seas assumes its planned UK programme.

The 3,960-passenger Freedom of the Seas, which first entered service in 2006, will operate from Southampton between May and October 2027. The vessel is slightly larger than the 3,344-passenger Mariner of the Seas and had originally been scheduled to sail from Miami during that period.

Royal Caribbean confirmed that Freedom of the Seas will sail on the same departure dates previously assigned to Mariner of the Seas, although some itineraries have been revised, with certain ports changed or removed.

“As part of our ongoing itinerary planning process, which sometimes requires flexibility due to scheduling, port agreements or operational needs, the Mariner of the Seas will be redeployed for our summer 2027 season,

“We know how much effort goes into planning your vacation and apologize for the inconvenience.”

Royal Caribbean statement

What Freedom Of The Seas Will Offer From Southampton

From its new UK homeport, Freedom of the Seas is expected to operate a series of itineraries to Northern and Western Europe throughout the summer season.

Freedom is larger and does have slightly more to offer UK guests. She’ll also offer more of a continuation since her sister ships Independence of the Seas and Liberty of the Seas have been the ships sailing out of Southampton for the past few years.

While many sailings will mirror those originally planned for Mariner of the Seas, some adjustments have already been made, meaning guests may see differences in ports of call or route structure.

Passengers who were originally booked on Mariner sailings are being given the option to transfer to the equivalent Freedom of the Seas cruise, often on the same date, with the cruise line aiming to provide a like-for-like replacement where possible.

Guests who take no action will automatically be moved to a comparable stateroom onboard Freedom of the Seas.

Other options include rebooking onto a different Royal Caribbean sailing, with change fees waived, or cancelling for a full refund of the cruise fare paid. However, passengers switching to a more expensive sailing will need to pay any fare difference.

Mariner Of The Seas Set For New Deployment

While Royal Caribbean has not fully detailed Mariner of the Seas’ new summer programme, the ship is now expected to reposition away from the UK ahead of the season.

Mariner of the Seas

A 17-night transatlantic sailing departing New Orleans on 24th April 2027 will see the vessel head to the Mediterranean, calling at ports including Casablanca, Tangier and Málaga before arriving in Barcelona.

This suggests the ship will spend at least part of the summer season operating in Europe outside of the UK market, although further itinerary details have yet to be confirmed.

The swap highlights how Royal Caribbean continues to adjust its deployments in response to operational needs and demand, with Southampton remaining a key base for the line’s European operations despite the change in ships.

New Terminal to Add 1 Million Passengers

Port Tampa Bay is running out of room. According to officials, the port’s three existing cruise terminals are operating at or near maximum capacity. So, a new terminal is in the works.

Aerial view of multiple cruise ships docked at Port Tampa Bay terminals near downtown Tampa
Port Tampa Bay is currently at capacity, with record-breaking passenger numbers driving the need for a new terminal.

Tampa Busier Than Ever

Tampa might not offer the busiest cruise port in Florida or the largest ships, but it’s breaking its own records as more cruise passengers than ever hop on its available ships from five different cruise lines.

The port welcomed a record 1.66 million cruise passengers in 2025, which is the highest total in its history. It’s now on track for about 1.8 million passengers in 2026, with a record 51 ship calls in March and 394 expected in all of 2026.

This Saturday three ships are scheduled: Grandeur of the Seas, Rhapsody of the Seas, and Carnival Paradise.

While Tampa can’t host mega-ships (those too tall to pass under the Sunshine Skyway Bridge), the port is moving forward with a new terminal right in its same location.

And according to news reports from Tampa Latest, the port is “already turning away new cruise itineraries due to limited space.”

A Fourth Terminal

Port Tampa Bay is actively planning a fourth cruise terminal.  Currently the port offers three cruise terminals in the downtown Channelside area: Terminal 2, Terminal 3, and Terminal 6.

The Tampa Bay Business Journal reported that this new terminal will be able deliver up to 200 more ship calls each year and bring over 1 million additional passengers.

This would put the port’s yearly totals well over 2.5 million once the new building project is completed.

Everything is still in the early planning phase, and design work is expected to be complete over the next year.

The goal is to improve passenger flow, reduce downtown traffic congestion, add modern amenities like shore power, and give the major homeport lines (Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, and Margaritaville at Sea) the extra capacity they need.

Bay News 9 stated that construction has begun on the new Terminal 6 facility, with a target opening around 2029.

Skyway Port Plans Still Dead

This fourth Tampa Bay terminal is separate from the so-called “Skyway Port” in Manatee County we reported on last month.  The plan for a brand-new mega-ship terminal on the Gulf side of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge is currently dead in the water.

On top of facing strong environmental and community opposition, that project was also blocked after Governor Ron DeSantis signed Senate Bill 302 in March 2026.

Cruise Fever will keep monitoring the developments of Tampa’s cruise port as it continues to grow and offer more options to Tamp Bay residents.

Disney Cruise Line Enhances Splash Pad Safety Following Child Injury On Disney Dream

Disney Cruise Line has introduced safety changes to one of its onboard children’s play areas after a serious accident involving a toddler prompted a review of the space.

The incident occurred in September 2025 aboard the Disney Dream, when a young child was injured while playing in the Nemo’s Reef splash pad, a “Finding Nemo”-themed area designed for children under four years old.

Disney Dream splashpad changes

During what appeared to be routine play, the child fell from a coral-themed structure and suffered a broken femur.

The severity of the injury required immediate medical attention, with X-rays confirming the fracture. The family’s holiday was cut short as they were medically evacuated in Nassau, Bahamas, so the child could receive treatment.

Disney Cruise Line later offered the family a complimentary replacement sailing once the child had recovered.

Safety Changes Introduced At Nemo’s Reef

The child’s mother, Courtney Livingston, shared an update on 30th March 2026 via social media, revealing that her family had returned to the same ship for their rescheduled cruise and found noticeable safety improvements in place.

According to her post, the coral fixture involved in the accident has been removed entirely. In addition, the flooring in the area has been replaced with a softer surface, aimed at reducing the risk of injury in the event of a fall.

Previously, the section featured four raised, stool-like coral structures beneath an image of Squirt, the young turtle character from “Finding Nemo”. These elements have now been taken out, and at present, no replacement features have been installed.

It remains unclear whether similar modifications will be rolled out to Nemo’s Reef aboard the Disney Fantasy or to comparable splash zones across the fleet.

Other ships feature similar toddler play areas, including Dory’s Reef on Disney Wonder, Nephews’ Splash Zone on Disney Magic, and Toy Story-themed water zones on newer vessels.

Ongoing Emphasis On Supervision

Despite the physical changes, Disney continues to stress that parental supervision remains essential. Company policy requires that children using splash pads must be supervised at all times, with adult oversight mandatory for all guests under the age of 16 in pool and water play areas.

Given the often busy nature of pool decks, parents are also encouraged to monitor behaviour closely. Activities such as running, jumping, and diving are not permitted in these spaces to help minimise risks.

Further Safety Measures Introduced After Separate Incident

The updates to Nemo’s Reef are not the only recent safety enhancements aboard Disney Dream. Following a separate incident in June 2025, the cruise line also introduced additional safeguards around portholes.

In that earlier case, a five-year-old girl fell through an open porthole while posing for a photograph. The child’s mother reportedly believed the opening was covered with glass. The girl’s father jumped into the water to rescue her, and both were unharmed.

Subsequently, Disney added extra railings and plexiglass barriers to prevent similar incidents from occurring in future.

These developments highlight Disney Cruise Line’s approach of reviewing onboard incidents and implementing changes aimed at improving passenger safety, particularly for younger guests. The latest adjustments at Nemo’s Reef reflect a continued focus on reducing risks in family-focused areas across its ships.

Cruise Lines Change Itineraries Due to Landslide Risks in Alaska

Cruise lines are making changes to itineraries for cruises to Alaska this summer due to landslide risks in the area.

Tracy Arm Fjord
Carnival Cruise Line visiting Tracy Arm Fjord

Cruise lines, including Carnival Cruise Line, Virgin Voyages, and Holland America Line, will not have ships visiting Tracy Arm Fjord this summer. Current guidance due to landslide fears have cruise lines moving away from the area as an abundance of caution.

Virgin Voyages, the adults only cruise line, is sailing their first season to Alaska this year and the visit to Tracy Arm Fjord will be replaced with Endicott Arm & Dawes Glacier.

Carnival Cruise Line is also making changes and sent the following statement about them to Cruise Fever:

“After closely monitoring geological conditions in the area, Carnival has determined that the Endicott Arm Fjord is the best option for our summer itineraries in Alaska in lieu of Tracy Arm Fjord. Guests will be offered comparable shore excursions and experiences.”

Holland America Line is also replacing Tracy Arm Fjord with Endicott Arm. They sent us the following statement about the itinerary changes:

“We’ve informed affected guests of our decision to replace Tracy Arm with scenic cruising in Endicott Arm this season due to ongoing ice and geological conditions. Endicott Arm offers an impressive experience featuring stunning fjord scenery, wilderness sightings and close-up views of the actively calving Dawes Glacier.”

A visit to Endicott Arm & Dawes Glacier offers the following experiences:

  • Iconic glacier cruising
  • Up close glacier views
  • Ice calving and other natural experiences
  • Wildlife viewing opportunities in the fjord
  • Immersive scenery

Cruise Fever has reached out to other cruise lines about changes and will update this article when we hear back from them.

Carnival Forced To Quash April Fool’s Rumours As Guests Fall For Fake Announcements

Carnival Cruise Line has been forced to respond to a wave of April Fool’s Day hoaxes after convincing fake announcements left some guests questioning whether major onboard traditions and loyalty benefits were being scrapped.

Carnival Ducky Mascot

The confusion prompted the line’s brand ambassador, John Heald, to step in and clarify the truth as misleading posts circulated widely online on 1st April.

One of the most convincing hoaxes took the form of an official-looking letter, complete with Carnival Cruise Line branding and a Miami headquarters address. The message claimed that the popular guest-led activity of hiding and finding “cruise ducks” would be banned with immediate effect.

The fabricated letter cited environmental concerns, suggesting that the small plastic ducks could have “unintended environmental impacts” on marine ecosystems and destinations visited by the ships. It also referenced sustainability efforts, adding to its apparent credibility.

However, despite its polished appearance and a signature attributed to company president Christine Duffy, the message was entirely false. Some versions of the image omitted the small “April Fools!” line at the bottom, making it even more believable.

The letter also circulated with Royal Caribbean branding on some other Facebook groups.

Heald quickly reassured concerned guests that there was no truth to the claim.

“No, this is completely not true. Somebody posted this for the April 1 thing. Hide the ducks, we love it,” he confirmed.

Cruise ducks have become a widely embraced tradition across the industry, with passengers hiding and discovering decorated rubber ducks as part of a light-hearted onboard game. Carnival has previously leaned into the trend, even introducing a duck mascot on select sailings.

Cruise Ducks Rumour Causes Stir

The rapid spread of the fake letter highlights how easily well-crafted hoaxes can gain traction, particularly when they tap into real industry topics such as sustainability.

Carnival Ducks Letter

Carnival Cruise Line, like many operators, has placed increasing emphasis on environmental responsibility in recent years, which likely made the claim appear plausible to some guests.

Despite the brief panic, the cruise line has given no indication that it plans to restrict the activity, which remains a popular way for guests to interact and add a personal touch to their holidays.

Loyalty Programme Hoax Sparks Further Confusion

A second rumour proved more concerning for some loyal customers, as it suggested that Carnival Cruise Line was preparing to reverse major changes to its loyalty scheme.

The false announcement claimed the company would abandon its upcoming Carnival Rewards programme and return to the traditional VIFP system, which is based on the number of days sailed rather than onboard spending.

According to the hoax, the supposed reversal was driven by guest feedback and could even include a hybrid model combining both systems.

Heald firmly dismissed the claim, making it clear that the information was entirely fabricated.

“I am not going to spend any more time answering this question because so many have been falling for this April [fool] post,” he said.

Carnival first revealed plans for its new spend-based rewards programme in June 2025, following years of speculation about potential changes. While the line has made some adjustments since the announcement, there has been no suggestion that it intends to scrap the new system altogether.

April Fool’s Tradition Continues

While the rumours caused some temporary confusion, they also underline how engaged Carnival’s customer base remains, with many quick to seek clarification directly from Heald.

The brand ambassador himself also joined in the spirit of the day, jokingly announcing Cleveland as a new Carnival homeport, a long-running gag familiar to his followers.

Though clearly tongue-in-cheek, the prank was far less convincing than the circulating hoaxes, and unlikely to fool experienced cruisers.

The episode serves as a reminder for guests to double-check unusual announcements, particularly on 1st April, when even the most official-looking claims may not be what they seem.
