Massive Fight Breaks Out Just Outside Cruise Terminal in Long Beach

Security teams at a Long Beach (San Pedro) cruise terminal had to be called into action this morning, as a fight broke out just outside the building.

fight outside Long Beach cruise terminal
Photo of the brawl, provided by X user @Rororowyaboatz

Video footage provided by X user @Rororowyaboatz showed at least a dozen individuals throwing fists and pulling hair before security came outside to break things up.

Carnival Firenze departed out of the port this morning for a 4-day cruise to Cabo San Lucas and Ensenada, Mexico.

Carnival Radiance is currently in port and is scheduled to go on a 3-day sailing to Ensenada later today.

Below is video footage of the fight.  (Video contains strong language)

Fighting on a cruise ship can earn any passenger an instant lifetime ban, and cruise lines have been cracking down on this kind of behavior a lot more recently.

While this incident took place outside the cruise terminal it remains to be seen if the consequences are just as severe.

Waterslide Closed After Portion Shatters on Icon of the Seas, Injuring a Passenger

A waterslide in the world’s largest waterpark on a cruise ship has been shut down after a major malfunction.

On August 7, 2025, a clear portion of a water slide shattered while a passenger was on it, causing injuries and leading to an immediate investigation.

Waterpark on Icon of the Seas

It all happened on “The Frightening Bolt” waterslide, a major feature of the ship’s Category 6 Waterpark. The slide is famous for having the biggest drop at sea, at 46 feet tall, and for its trapdoor launch, which terrifies cruisers as the floor drops out beneath them.

But in this incident, the waterslide was frightening in other ways after a giant hole in the bottom of a slopped section started circulating online.

According to some social media reports, as an adult male guest was riding the slide, a clear acrylic panel broke, causing water to gush onto the deck below.

Passengers on the deck were soaked, but the biggest worries were for the person who had slid down the slide. Video of the incident quickly spread, showing panicked reactions from other passengers.

The unnamed guest suffered “skin laceration injuries from his legs to his hands,” but fortunately, did not fall through the unexpected hole.

Royal Caribbean provided the passenger with medical care and is being treated for his injuries.  The water slide and the surrounding area on Deck 15 have been closed for a full investigation.

The news quickly spread to online communities like Reddit.  Several comments provided details from passengers who were on the ship.

One user, who claimed to have a son on board, wrote, “My son is on the ship and watched the whole thing. It was an adult and he did not fall through the glass thank god. He was cut up very bad and taken away. Someone before him was also cut coming down but didn’t have a chance to relay that info back up before the next person came down.”

Other comments from passengers expressed similar concerns for the injured man.

A different user who was on the ship tried to clarify earlier reports and rumors that were spreading about the incident saying, “It wasn’t a kid. It was an adult and his son was suppose to go right after. We were suppose to go right after the kid.”

So, how did this happen?  After incidents like this many start playing the guessing game, but until the investigation is complete we will have to wait for confirmation.

Users online speculated about a number of possibilities, from a manufacturing or material defect to the effects of constant use and environmental factors. One user noted the location of the break, saying, “Just the location of the hole is a strange place for it to fail.”

Another user, responding to a theory about a passenger causing the damage, stated, “Don’t matter if they took a hammer and banged on it. It shouldn’t fail.”

Carnival UK Reverses Ban On Cruise Magazine Editors

Carnival UK has officially reversed the travel ban previously imposed on the editors of Sail Away Magazine, following weeks of controversy, confusion, and backlash from cruise fans and media professionals alike.

Sail Away Magazine Ban Reversed

In a brief press release issued on 8th August 2025, Sail Away Magazine confirmed the travel restriction – originally applied across Carnival UK-managed brands P&O Cruises, Cunard, and Princess Cruises – has been withdrawn with immediate effect.

“We welcome this decision and regard it as a positive step forward,

“Our editors, Dan and Jay, are long-standing advocates for the cruise industry and have always championed cruising as the very best way to travel.

“Sail Away Magazine looks forward to working more constructively with Carnival UK in the future.”

Sail Away Magazine press release

While no further comment will be made by the publication, the reversal marks a significant turnaround from what many had seen as a worrying precedent for freedom of speech within the cruise sector.

What Happened: The Timeline of the Ban

The issue first emerged in early June 2025, when Sail Away editors Dan Wailing and Jay Cannon received a letter from Carnival UK stating they were banned from all Carnival Group brands for five years due to a pattern of complaints and reviews suggesting the cruise lines could not “offer the holiday [they] are looking for.”

“It is thus no longer appropriate for you to travel with us, or any of the Carnival group brands,” the letter stated, concluding with: “No further correspondence will be entered into on this matter.”

Iona Cruise

At face value, this appeared to be a blanket ban across all eight Carnival Corporation brands – Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, P&O Cruises, Cunard, Holland America Line, Seabourn, AIDA, and Costa Cruises.

Dan and Jay cancelled future bookings and charter arrangements, including a September sailing on Princess Cruises and a June voyage on Holland America’s Rotterdam, costing them thousands in deposits and production expenses.

However, by late June, Carnival clarified that the ban only applied to Carnival UK-managed brands – namely P&O Cruises, Cunard, and Princess Cruises (though Princess’ inclusion remains structurally ambiguous, as it operates under both US and UK management).

Why Were They Banned?

Dan and Jay are known for Sail Away Magazine, a cruise-focused publication with a print magazine, podcast, and YouTube channel reaching over 40,000 followers.

While supportive of cruising as a travel style, they are also known for their forthright reviews, which often touch on service cuts, guest complaints, and industry transparency.

Some of their most critical recent stories included:

  • A negative review of Carnival Miracle, calling it “the worst cruise we’ve done”
  • Publicising a reader poll that found 72% of cruisers believe standards have fallen under Carnival UK leadership
  • Criticising P&O Cruises for a last-minute cancellation of Aurora
  • Challenging Cunard’s decision to charge for room service
  • A tense interaction with Carnival UK’s PR team, where they referred to staff as “delusional”

Carnival UK did not cite specific reasons for the ban, nor did they accuse the pair of defamation or misconduct.

The vague language in the original letter led many to see the move as retaliatory censorship rather than a commercial or safety-based decision.

A Question of Influence and Accountability

The ban sparked widespread debate across the cruise community and beyond. Should a company blacklist guests for being too honest – or critical – online? Does this send a message that public commentary could carry serious consequences for those in the travel media?

Supporters of Dan and Jay argued that their transparency helps push the industry forward.

What’s Next?

With the ban now lifted, Dan and Jay are free to cruise once again with P&O Cruises, Cunard, and Princess Cruises.

The reversal is being viewed as a win for independent media, but also a cautionary tale of corporate communication gone awry.

The incident raised broader questions around the boundaries between influencer marketing, editorial integrity, and customer relations in the age of social media.

While Sail Away Magazine has stated the matter is now closed, the legacy of the ban may well influence how other travel brands approach criticism – and how media creators choose to share it.

Icon of the Seas Waterslide Shatters Mid-Ride, Injures Guest

A high-adrenaline ride aboard Icon of the Seas turned dangerous on the evening of 7th August 2025, when a clear panel on the ship’s Frightening Bolt waterslide unexpectedly shattered during use, injuring one passenger and causing a water deluge onto the deck below.

Icon of the Seas Waterslide Break

The incident occurred in Thrill Island’s Category 6 Waterpark – the largest waterpark at sea – home to several record-breaking slides.

Frightening Bolt, in particular, is known for having the tallest drop at sea at 46 feet, a dramatic trapdoor launch, and a full 360° loop.

Unexpected Mid-Ride Malfunction

According to reports from fellow passengers and confirmed by Royal Caribbean, an unidentified male guest suffered “skin laceration injuries from his legs to his hands” after the acrylic section of the slide broke while he was riding through the transparent tube.

When the clear portion shattered, water burst through the opening, soaking guests relaxing on the deck and creating slippery conditions. No additional injuries were reported.

“Our team provided medical care to an adult guest when acrylic glass broke off a water slide as the guest passed through the slide,

“The guest is being treated for his injuries. The water slide is closed for the remainder of the sailing pending an investigation.”

Royal Caribbean statement

The surrounding area on Deck 15 was also temporarily closed as a safety precaution.

Icon’s Itinerary Continues

The 248,663-gross ton Icon of the Seas is currently wrapping up a 7-night Eastern Caribbean itinerary, which departed PortMiami on 2nd August.

Port calls included St. Maarten, St. Thomas, and Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s private island in the Bahamas.

It is unclear whether the slide will be reopened in time for the next sailing, another week-long cruise departing Miami on 9th August.

Slide Incidents Rare, But Not Unheard Of

Despite the shocking nature of this malfunction, waterslide accidents on cruise ships are extremely rare. Cruise lines are subject to rigorous safety regulations and all onboard attractions are inspected regularly for structural integrity and safety compliance.

Icon of the Seas, which entered service in early 2024, is one of the newest vessels in the Royal Caribbean fleet and is filled with high-tech amenities.

This incident, however, raises questions among some guests about possible manufacturing or installation faults.

That said, Royal Caribbean has stressed that the Frightening Bolt will remain closed until expert engineers can confirm it is safe to reopen.

Sister ship Star of the Seas is set to launch next week too and will also feature Frightening Bolt – there’s no word yet on whether the slide will be impacted on that ship.

Recent Similar Incidents

This is not the first structural failure involving glass on a Royal Caribbean ship this summer.

On 8th June 2025, a glass panel at Symphony of the Seas’ Coastal Kitchen shattered, narrowly missing nearby guests.

On 29th June, another glass panel in the ship’s Solarium roof broke while docking in Port Canaveral, Florida.

Cruise lines are expected to investigate all such occurrences thoroughly, not only to make immediate repairs but also to ensure similar incidents do not occur elsewhere across the fleet.

For now we can only wish the injured guest a speedy recovery, and hope that Royal Caribbean can identify the cause of the issue and make sure it doesn’t happen again.

5 Unique Travel Experiences That Come With A Twist Of Strategy

When we think about travel, images of scenic beaches, street food, and historical landmarks often come to mind. But for travellers who enjoy a bit of mental stimulation with their adventures, there’s something extra satisfying about experiences that require a touch of strategy.

Whether navigating a cultural nuance or learning a new game, these moments add unexpected richness to your journey. Here are five strategic travel experiences that add brainpower to your itinerary!

1. Mastering the Markets in Marrakech

Shopping in Morocco’s bustling souks is more than a retail experience—it’s a mental dance that demands awareness, quick thinking, and cultural sensitivity.

Haggling is not only expected but celebrated, and doing it well requires understanding the rhythm of negotiation. Knowing when to make a counteroffer, express interest or indifference, and walk away without offending the seller is a strategic skill.

Beyond pricing, you’ll also need to assess quality, compare vendors, and make decisions in a chaotic, fast-moving environment. From handcrafted leather goods to colourful textiles and aromatic spices, the markets are a treasure trove that rewards careful decision-making.

Travellers who lean into the experience often find that bargaining becomes just as memorable as the souvenirs they bring home.

2. Cracking the Tokyo Subway System

Japan’s railway network is renowned for its punctuality and coverage, but to the uninitiated, Tokyo’s subway system can feel like a sprawling labyrinth.

With multiple operators, colour-coded lines, and countless station exits, navigating Shibuya to Asakusa during rush hour requires more than a glance at Google Maps.

Success lies in pre-planning your route, understanding signage (some of which may only be in Japanese), and learning the etiquette of the system—such as where to queue, when to whisper, and how to navigate complex transfers. Even locals can find themselves stumped by certain route combinations. But once you get the hang of it, there’s a deep sense of satisfaction in moving through the city like a seasoned Tokyoite.

If you’re feeling extra adventurous, try purchasing a day pass and hopping on and off to explore lesser-known neighbourhoods. It becomes an urban puzzle with delicious ramen or tranquil gardens waiting at every stop.

3. Playing Table Games in Monaco’s Casinos

For many travellers, exploring a new city includes checking out its nightlife. In places like Monaco, Macau, or even European resort cities, casinos can be part of that experience.

If you’re curious about table games but don’t want to dive into high-stakes territory, consider trying the blackjack free bet variant.

Unlike traditional blackjack, where doubling down or splitting your hand requires an additional bet, the free bet variant lets you make these moves without putting more money on the line. It adds a strategic twist to the game—do you take the free double down or play it safe? Is this the right moment to split?

This variant is ideal for casual players who enjoy making calculated choices but want to limit their financial risk. It turns the game into a low-pressure mental challenge, perfect for an hour or two of evening fun abroad.

Just remember: it’s all about the experience, not the outcome.

4. Navigating Street Food Like a Local in Bangkok

Bangkok is a paradise for food lovers, especially those who crave flavour, variety, and a little adventure. But diving into the city’s legendary street food scene requires more than an empty stomach. You’ll need to apply some quick decision-making skills to eat well and safely.

First, look for long lines of locals—that’s usually a sign of quality and freshness.

Second, watch the preparation process; cleanliness and ingredient handling speak volumes.

Finally, understanding peak times can help you catch food at its freshest and avoid long waits.

Choosing what to try is another strategic game. You may need to balance curiosity with caution with everything from grilled satay skewers and mango sticky rice to deep-fried insects.

Bonus points if you learn a few key phrases in Thai to communicate your spice tolerance or dietary preferences!

Eating like a local in Bangkok isn’t just about savouring new flavours—it’s a dynamic cultural exchange that rewards attentiveness, adaptability, and a bit of bravery.

5. Planning a Spontaneous Day Trip in Europe

In Europe, spontaneity often pays off—but only if you plan it right. Let’s say you’re based in Berlin or Barcelona and have a free day. With an efficient rail network at your disposal, a well-executed day trip can turn into the highlight of your travels.

The strategy comes in balancing flexibility with research.

You’ll want to check train schedules, weather forecasts, and ticket availability. Many European railways offer discounts for same-day bookings or group travel. Use that to your advantage.

Pick a destination that aligns with your mood—a medieval town, a beachside village, or a scenic hike. Then plan your route to maximise time on-site and minimise backtracking. With the right approach, you can squeeze in a museum visit, a local meal, and a leisurely walk before returning to your base city.

Planning a spontaneous day trip sharpens your logistical thinking and rewards you with rich, compact memories that feel special because they weren’t pre-scripted.

Wrapping Up

From the backstreets of Southeast Asia to the blackjack tables of Europe, travel offers countless ways to challenge your mind and test your instincts.

These moments may not come with a trophy, but they leave you with something even better: stories, skills, and the thrill of having figured it all out.

Cruise Ship Fails Health Inspection with Worst Score of the Year

Scoring an 81 in Chemistry class in high school might be a passing grade, but in the world of CDC cruise ship inspections, it’s low enough to earn a failing grade.

For the residents of the Odyssey, the promise was simple: a three-and-a-half-year journey around the world on a ship they could call home. But a recent failed health inspection by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is the latest in a series of setbacks for the vessel and its operator, Villa Vie Residences.

Villa Vie Odyssey

This story is more than just a bad score; it’s a look at the challenges of converting an older ship into a full-time home for 900+ residents.

The Failed Inspection and its Findings

On July 9, 2025, the Odyssey was inspected by the CDC and received a score of 81, the lowest inspection score of the year so far.

A passing grade is 86 and a few ships this year barely scrapped by. The inspection report revealed numerous issues, with the most serious concerns centered on the ship’s potable water system.

Read more: 15 cruise ships that scored a perfect 100 this year so far

The report indicated that during water bunkering operations, chlorine levels in the drinking water were consistently below the required minimum and that no corrective action was taken. A major safety hazard was also identified: a drain line from the water purification system was hard-piped to a gray water tank, creating a risk of cross-contamination.

Other issues were found throughout the ship, including:

  • Food Safety and Equipment: Inspectors found a greasy waffle iron stored with clean items, along with several refrigerators and other food-holding units that were out of service.  One note stated that some food was held at unsafe temperatures (like cream at 56°F).
  • General Maintenance: Problems with poor deck conditions, dusty overhead areas, and standing water were noted. Even the swimming pools were cited for not having proper safety signs and depth markers.
  • Pest Control: The presence of fruit flies in a pantry pointed to a pest control problem.

The Ship’s Troubled Past

The Odyssey is not a new ship, and it hasn’t been smooth sailing for a while. It’s a 30-year-old vessel that has sailed under different names and owners, most recently as the MS Braemar. Villa Vie Residences purchased it in late 2023 with the goal of converting it into a residential cruise ship.

This conversion process, however, had its bumps along the way.

The ship’s maiden voyage, which was supposed to start in May 2024, was delayed multiple times due to technical issues, including problems with the rudder stocks.

The company’s founder, Mikael Petterson, has openly discussed the difficulties of reactivating a 30-year-old ship that had been sitting around for several years.

So, What’s Next?

The Odyssey is now out of U.S. waters, so a re-inspection won’t happen until it returns to a U.S. port.

However, the company is required to fix all the problems found in the report. Petterson has pointed out that many of the issues are a result of the ship’s age and design, as it wasn’t built to today’s U.S. public health standards.

He has also noted that the ship has passed other health inspections since leaving Europe. The company states it is taking the feedback seriously and is confident a future inspection will result in a passing score.
