MSC’s New Airport Check-In Option Lets You Skip the Seattle Cruise Terminal Lines Entirely

MSC Cruises just found a way to get guests onto their cruise ship even faster when they arrive at the port. In fact, with their new system rolling out in the Port of Seattle, passengers will be able to go directly to boarding, skipping the usual port lines.

There are two things to note, though: this is only being offered in Seattle right now, and it’s only for guests who booked an airport transfer through MSC.

Cruise lines have been speeding up the embarkation process at lightning-fast speeds over the last few years. It wasn’t that long ago that you could expect to spend a good hour or two in the port, waiting for your grouping to get called.

That’s all changed. It’s changed so much that I often wonder why new cruise terminals are so beautiful and fancy since you just seem to breeze right through them.

Now, MSC Cruises is introducing an airport check-in system that allows guests to bypass the cruise terminal line entirely.

How It Works

So, it’s not like the check-in process is being removed from the equation. It’s just being done a bit earlier in the process.

After you complete your initial check-in steps at home using the MSC for Me app to get your digital boarding pass, the rest of the setup happens when you land.

Instead of waiting until you get to the pier to verify your documents and handle final cruise formalities, you take care of all of it right at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA).

MSC sets up a station at the airport where you complete your full embarkation procedures before you ever step foot on the transfer bus.

Once your documents are stamped and cleared, you hop on the official MSC shuttle to Pier 91.

Because you did the heavy lifting at the airport, your arrival at the terminal is a completely different experience. You walk right past the main check-in counters, head straight through the mandatory security screening, and walk right onto the ship.

A Win for Alaska Cruisers

This new system timed out perfectly with MSC Poesia’s Alaska season. If you have ever sailed out of Seattle during the peak summer months, you know the terminal can get pretty crowded with thousands of people trying to process through the lines at the exact same time.

Moving that administrative bottleneck to the airport should help a lot with terminal traffic.

Right now, the only catch is that you have to be on that official MSC airport transfer to get this perk.

It does not matter if you booked your flights through MSC or handled them independently on your own, but the transfer ticket itself is the ticket to skipping the terminal line.

Future Plans (Hopefully Coming to a Port Near You)

If you aren’t flying into Sea-Tac or prefer taking an Uber, don’t write this off just yet. MSC has said that this Seattle airport launch is just phase one.

They plan to eventually extend the remote check-in process to general airport arrivals, local hotel departures, and other key starting locations.

Even better, they plan to gradually roll this out to other major cruise ports down the road.

If you have an upcoming Alaska sailing booked on MSC Poesia or any future MSC departures out of Seattle, it might be worth logging into your cruise planner.

Checking the price to add that official airport transfer could save you time, or at the very least get you onto the ship almost as soon as you get to the cruise port.

Norwegian Sky’s Last Ever Sailing Changed Due to Middle East Conflict

One of Norwegian Cruise Line’s fan-favorite ships is saying goodbye this year, but the vessel’s last itinerary was just dramatically changed because of what’s going on in the Middle East.

Norwegian Sky cruise ship

Norwegian Sky’s farewell cruise is set to depart Greece on September 9, 2026.  But the 1,944-passenger ship will no longer end it’s sailing in Dubai.

And it will no longer be a 21-day sailing.

When I wrote about the ship saying goodbye in September this year, I mentioned that a lot of would-be passengers were feeling pretty uneasy about the planned transit through the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf.

Well, things haven’t exactly calmed down in the region as much as we hoped and NCL decided it wasn’t worth the risk, especially since that final cruise is only a couple months out.

In a statement sent out to booked guests, Norwegian announced that the repositioning voyage will now head to a completely different destination in the Middle East, wrapping up with an overnight call in Muscat, Oman.

Statement from Norwegian Cruise Line

“While the voyage is still several months away, we believe a proactive approach is appropriate given the evolving conditions in the Middle East,” the company stated.

“As such, we are revising the voyage accordingly, and we will continue to monitor the situation for the safety and security of all onboard.”

Because of the change, the ship is dropping three whole days, turning the trip into an 18-night itinerary instead of the original 21.

Along with missing out on Dubai, passengers will also bypass planned stops in Doha, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi, UAE.

The good news is that the new route completely eliminates the transit through the Strait of Hormuz, where military conflicts caused major disruptions earlier this year.

Guests will still get to experience bucket-list transits through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea, alongside scheduled visits to spots across Greece, Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia, including Rhodes, Alexandria, Port Sokhna, Safaga, Sharm El Sheikh, Jeddah, and Aqaba.

How NCL is Making it Right for Passengers

Trimming a dream cruise by three days is a major disappointment, but Norwegian is doing its best to compensate booked guests for the disruption:

  • 15% Cruise Fare Refund: All passengers will receive a refund equal to 15 percent of their original paid cruise fare.
  • 15% Future Cruise Credit: NCL is throwing in a 15 percent discount in the form of an FCC, valid for any published sailing through December 31, 2027.
  • Air and Transfer Adjustments: If you booked flights or transfers through NCL, they’ll handle the changes automatically. If you booked independently, NCL will cover up to $300 per person for airline change or cancellation fees not covered by travel insurance.
  • Full Refunds Available: If the new itinerary doesn’t cut it for you, you can cancel your booking for a full refund with zero penalties.

Prepaid packages for drinks and internet will be adjusted to match the shorter timeline, and any shore excursions for dropped ports will go right back to the original form of payment.

It’s a bittersweet turn of events for a ship that holds such a special place in the hearts of so many Cruise Fever readers.

While it’s not the exact grand finale NCL originally planned, keeping the crew and passengers safe is always the right call.

The good news for fans of this classic ship is that she isn’t heading to the scrapyard. Once she wraps up this final voyage and officially leaves the NCL fleet, she will be handed over to Cordelia Cruises.

If you aren’t familiar with them, Cordelia is India’s leading domestic cruise line. They specialize in premium, family-friendly sailings out of major Indian ports like Mumbai and Goa.

The ship is set to get a brand-new name and a fresh lease on life, sailing regional itineraries starting in late September or October. She may be leaving the Norwegian family, but her story is far from over.

Celebrity Cruises Adding 13 New Experiences to One of Their Ships

Celebrity Cruises has announced that they will be adding 13 new experiences to Celebrity Reflection during a radical makeover of the cruise ship.

new celebrity reflection pool

Celebrity Cruises is adding many of the popular Edge Series features to Celebrity Reflection and two new concepts, Orange Peel Bar & Grille and Tacos del Sol.

Celebrity Reflection sails year-round to the Caribbean from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on cruises that range from three- to eight-nights in length.

Outdoor Venues

The ship’s outdoor deck will be redesigned with a modern tropical atmosphere. It will have two dedicated bars, expanded seating, plush daybeds, and added shade, plus daily activities and poolside events.

Orange Peel Bar & Grille and Tacos del Sol will be two new poolside dining experiences. The first will feature smashburgers and other grilled favorites alongside frozen cocktails. Tacos del Sol will be a casual, open-air concept centered around bold, Mexican-inspired flavors.

Sunset Park

The reimagined Sunset Park transforms the ship’s top deck into a park-like outdoor space designed for relaxation. New private cabanas offer shaded areas, and the Sunset Park Cafe will serve casual bistro-style dining for breakfast and lunch.

New Spaces for Entertainment

The Parlor

Celebrity Reflection will have four new spaces for entertainment, including the Grand Plaza, a three-story Edge Series-style venue. A new, centrally located Martini Bar will feature a giant suspended chandelier and have live music during the day and night.

The 125-seat Boulevard Lounge will have all-day entertainment anchored by dueling pianos.

The Parlor will be an elevated sports and gaming lounge that features hundreds of classic board games, billiards, and darts.

Dining

Trattoria Rossa

New dining being added to Celebrity Reflection includes Trattoria Rossa, Fine Cut Steakhouse, and Bora.

Trattoria Rossa is an Italian restaurant that debuted earlier this year on Celebrity Solstice. It will serve classic meat dishes and pastas made in-house daily.

The top-rated Fine Cut Steakhouse will also be added to the ship. It will feature 30-day dry-aged steaks, fresh seafood, and the elevated service.

Bora, offering panoramic ocean views, will be a Mediterranean-inspired rooftop concept. The venue will shift from day to night and feature a lively brunch and chef-led tableside dishes and shareable plates.

Laura Hodges Bethge, president of Celebrity Cruises, gave the following statement:

“Celebrity Cruises is constantly dreaming up ways to innovate and elevate what we deliver for our guests, which is what makes this fleet modernization program so much more than a refresh. With Celebrity Reflection, we’re evolving the guest experience in meaningful ways – introducing 13 new spaces designed to help guests relax, explore, and connect in ways that feel effortless and unforgettable.”

Emerald Cruises’ Newest River Ship Just Hit The Water—Here’s Where It Will Sail

Emerald Cruises & Tours has celebrated a major milestone for its newest river ship, Emerald Lumi, as the highly anticipated Emerald Star-Ship touched water for the first time at a shipyard in Romania. The ceremonial launch brings Emerald Lumi one step closer to welcoming guests aboard for her inaugural 2027 season, when she will sail the Seine River on cruises from Paris.

Relaxed luxury along the Seine

Emerald Lumi has been designed specifically for the Seine River, measuring 110 meters in length, allowing her to cruise right into the heart of Paris and into Honfleur, where few other river ships can reach. With no more than 130 guests on board, the Emerald Star-Ship will feature an intimate, contemporary design with spacious staterooms

and suites with innovative all-weather balconies. Welcoming social spaces include Reflections Restaurant, Horizon Bar & Lounge, and a heated indoor pool that transforms into an evening cinema. Emerald Lumi will also include a self-service laundry, a popular addition to the new Emerald Star-Ships.

“Emerald Lumi’s water launch is an exciting step in bringing a fresh style of river cruising to the Seine. By combining extended overnight stays in key ports with curated local history and culinary experiences, plus a choice of active EmeraldACTIVE excursions, this new itinerary offers a more immersive, unhurried way to explore northern France than many traditional river itineraries,” said Elisabeth Sadler, Vice President Product, River Cruises, Scenic Group.

Sensations of the Seine & Normandy highlights

From March 2027, Emerald Lumi will cruise the new eight-day Sensations of the Seine & Normandy itinerary, round-trip from Paris to Honfleur. Guests will spend extended time in port with overnight stays and later departures in destinations including Honfleur and La Roche-Guyon.

Each day includes a guided tour that showcases the character of each stop and EmeraldACTIVE options, such as guided e-bike rides, hikes, or kayaking, giving guests the choice between relaxed sightseeing and more energetic exploration. History lovers will relish included experiences “in the footsteps of Claude Monet” in Giverny and a full-day guided tour of the Normandy D-Day landing sites, visiting beaches, memorials, and museums that bring this pivotal chapter of World War II to life. Food and wine enthusiasts will enjoy included experiences such as a walking tour of Honfleur with fresh oyster tasting, showcasing the town’s maritime heritage and renowned seafood.

EmeraldPLUS experiences on this itinerary highlight the region’s rich culture and flavors, from an engaging World War II lecture on board to an exclusive visit to a traditional Normandy cider farm, complete with tastings of locally crafted ciders and regional delicacies.

Guests will also enjoy Emerald Cruises’ exceptional inclusions, with airport transfers, daily breakfast, lunch and dinner on board, complimentary drinks with meals, guided excursions, EmeraldPLUS and EmeraldACTIVE experiences, gratuities and Wi-Fi all taken care of, for a journey feel effortless from start to finish.

Scenic Group’s growing fleet

The construction of Emerald Lumi is being led by Scenic Group’s expert team at MKM Yachts and forms part of Scenic Group’s ongoing investment in its river and yacht fleets. Alongside Emerald Lumi on the Seine, the Emerald Cruises fleet continues to grow with Emerald Kaia and Emerald Astra recently commencing their inaugural seasons,

and new superyachts Emerald Raiya and Emerald Xara set to follow in 2027 and 2028. Sister brand Scenic is also expanding its ultra-luxury Scenic Discovery Yachts

fleet with Scenic Ikon in 2028 and new river ships in Asia on the Mekong in 2028 and India’s Hooghly river in 2027.

President’s Cruise 2027

The 2027 President’s Cruise, which will take place on Emerald Lumi, will continue the traditions of hosted dinners and excursions with the President of the US & LATAM, Ken Muskat.

Modeled after its cousin ship, Scenic Gem, Emerald Lumi will host new guests and guests loyal to the brand.  Departing August 14, 2027, this unforgettable voyage explores the charming cities and historic landscapes of the Seine, round-trip from Paris.

The President’s Cruise is one of Scenic Group’s most anticipated annual experiences, bringing together a select group of guests for a highly curated journey defined by elevated programming, exclusive onboard moments and direct access to company leadership. This voyage reinforces the brand’s focus on rewarding loyalty and creating deeper, more personal connections with its global guest community.

“The President’s Cruise is one of the most meaningful ways we connect with our guests,” said Ken Muskat. “It’s not just about the destination, it’s about creating a shared experience where our guests feel a true sense of access, connection, and belonging within the Scenic Group family. I am looking forward to hosting my 2027 cruise on the brand new Emerald Lumi.”

Fun Online Entertainment Ideas For Your Next Cruise

Online entertainment is a fun way to spend your downtime at sea, offering you many ways to keep the excitement going during your next cruise holiday. You can host or join online trivia or bingo, attend virtual cooking classes, or play at online casinos. Online entertainment has become a popular pastime on cruise ships for many passengers, allowing them to break the routine of lounging by the pool.

Even the most ardent cruise addict knows that downtime can become tedious, especially when you’ve already run through almost every activity available on board in your over-enthusiasm. If you’re looking for a fresh, exciting way to pass the time, you might consider joining the growing number of cruise passengers who have discovered the joy of online entertainment.

Thanks to Wi-Fi, the world of digital entertainment is just a click away, giving you instant access to a wide range of online content that keeps the excitement going when the rest of your cruise ship mates have run out of steam. Now you can attend virtual cooking classes, stream your favorite shows, or play live casino games on your mobile phone, even if you’re in the middle of the ocean.

Experience The Excitement of Live Casino Lobbies

Many travelers look forward to playing at the physical casinos on board once the ship reaches international waters. However, sometimes these casinos can get pretty crowded, noisy, and smoky during peak days.

Should you prefer a more private, comfortable, and personalized gaming experience, then online casinos might just be exactly what you’re looking for. These premium sites allow you to take the action right to your stateroom balcony or a quiet lounge chair on the observation deck.

You can play live casino games at one of the many online casinos that authentically replicate the feel of Vegas, from anywhere on the ship, effectively bypassing the crowds and claustrophobia in favor of fresh air and vast game libraries.

Using the ship’s upgraded Wi-Fi network, you can instantly access interactive digital lobbies featuring real human dealers who handle real cards and wheels. The live casinos offer various forms of:

  • Live blackjack lobbies
  • Immersive roulette
  • Live interactive gameshows

The advanced technology powering these online experiences can transport you from your cabin right onto the casino floor through high-definition streaming and interactive features.

Low-Bandwidth and Offline Digital Games

If you’ve chosen a basic wifi package or the ship is passing through a temporary satellite blind spot in a remote geographical location, you don’t need to give up mobile gaming. There are a few low-data and offline mobile games that are the perfect solution for casual, stress-free entertainment.

Even without an internet connection, you can still participate in:

  • Pass-and-play mobile games by downloading titles like Spaceteam, Heads Up! or Ticket to Ride before you leave the port. These games allow you to play locally with your travel companions on a single device without needing an internet connection.
  • Asynchronous multiplayer games allow you to participate in turn-based matches, such as chess. These games only require small, intermittent bursts of data, so they work perfectly even on a slow baseline ship connection.
  • Single-player games like Monument Valley or Starvew Valley are incredibly immersive and can keep you enraptured for hours through their captivating storylines, and the best part is that these games don’t require any internet once they’ve been downloaded.

The internet slowing down doesn’t mean your gaming fun needs to slow down, too. Instead, you can switch to low-data or offline games to keep the entertainment going while you’re waiting for the next fun activity on your cruise.

Interactive Port Preparations and Creativity

Those sea days when your ship is moving between destinations are the perfect opportunity for you to look ahead and prepare for your next adventure or reflect on the amazing memories you’ve already made.

Virtual Port Exploration

Get onto Google Earth and research your upcoming destinations, or download localized travel guides to:

  • Map out independent walking tracks
  • Identify historical landmarks
  • Find hidden gems like local restaurants

Language Learning

Spend your downtime familiarizing yourself with the local language on apps like Duolingo or Babbel. These apps offer bite-sized, interactive lessons where you can learn basic phrases in the local language.

Photo and Video Editing

Use offline creative tools like Adobe Lightroom Mobile or CapCut to curate, color-select and edit your holiday video to perfection. Now you can turn your vacation footage into high-quality clips ready to be uploaded to social media when you hit the docks.

Never a Dull Moment

Thanks to the many exciting online entertainment options, there will never be a dull moment on your next cruise. Instead of getting bored with the mundane routine of sitting by the pool, you play live casino games of Roulette, get lost in a captivating mobile game or learn a few key phrases to impress the locals at your next stop.

Celebrity Reflection Just Got 13 New Experiences — Here’s What’s Changing

Celebrity Cruises is reimagining one of its most beloved ships – and delivering new ways to experience the Caribbean – with the reveal of the newly modernized Celebrity Reflection. As the second Solstice Series ship to be made new again, the transformation introduces 13 new spaces including Edge Series standouts like the stunning Grand Plaza, guest-favorite venues from the revitalized Celebrity Solstice and two brand-new concepts – Orange Peel Bar & Grille and Tacos del Sol. From bow to stern, every detail reshapes how guests relax, dine, and connect across new outdoor spaces, dining experiences, and endless entertainment.

Sailing year-round in the Caribbean, Celebrity Reflection’s itineraries from Fort Lauderdale span three- and four-night Caribbean escapes to Key West and The Bahamas, to six- and eight-night journeys visiting Aruba, Curaçao, Bonaire, Turks & Caicos, and Grand Cayman. Guests can look forward to the 2027 President’s Cruise on the renewed Celebrity Reflection from May 10–14, 2027.

“Celebrity Cruises is constantly dreaming up ways to innovate and elevate what we deliver for our guests, which is what makes this fleet modernization program so much more than a refresh,” said Laura Hodges Bethge, president of Celebrity Cruises. “With Celebrity Reflection, we’re evolving the guest experience in meaningful ways – introducing 13 new spaces designed to help guests relax, explore, and connect in ways that feel effortless and unforgettable.”

The happiest pool day yet at the reimagined Celebrity Pool Club

The Celebrity Pool Club anchors the ship’s redesigned outdoor deck, blending modern design with a relaxed tropical atmosphere. Here, every detail is designed with relaxation in mind. Two dedicated bars, expanded seating, plush daybeds, and added shade, plus daily activities and poolside events make it easy for guests to spend the entire day at the water’s edge. Guests will also find two new-to-fleet poolside dining experiences:

  • Orange Peel Bar & Grille: Orange Peel Bar & Grille anchors the poolside experience with a menu built for sun-soaked days. The venue features smashburgers and other grilled favorites alongside frozen cocktails. Guests can enjoy service whether seated nearby or relaxing poolside.
  • Tacos del Sol: Tacos del Sol introduces a casual, open-air concept centered around bold, Mexican-inspired flavors. The venue features a build-your-own taco stand with a range of options and fresh toppings for poolside dining.

Four new spaces offer entertainment for every mood

The Grand Plaza is Celebrity Reflection’s most dramatic new space. The three-story, Edge Series-style venue anchors the ship’s entertainment. A new, centrally located Martini Bar will feature a giant suspended chandelier that commands the room, complete with a chandelier show, as well as live performances and music from day to night.

Originally debuting on Celebrity Solstice, the 125-seat Boulevard Lounge brings all-day entertainment to Celebrity Reflection, anchored by dueling pianos and interactive programming. Guests can enjoy games, karaoke, and live performances throughout the day. Steps away from Boulevard Lounge, Boulevard Bar offers a selection of handcrafted cocktails, perfect for enjoying before or after a show.

Another favorite from Celebrity Solstice, The Parlor is an elevated sports and gaming lounge. Featuring hundreds of classic board games, billiards, and darts, The Parlor is perfect for some friendly competition or watching sports on the big screens. Guests can enjoy craft cocktails, Celebrity Cruises’ award-winning whiskies, a menu of shareable bites, elevated takes on comfort-food classics, and a selection of over-the-top milkshakes.

Guests can soak up the Caribbean sun with a day in the park

The reimagined Sunset Park transforms the ship’s top deck into a park-like outdoor space designed for relaxation and connection. The open-air venue features a range of activities – from meditation to lawn games, outdoor movies, and live music – all set against sweeping ocean views. New private cabanas offer shaded areas to unwind, with dedicated attendants catering to guests’ every need. Sunset Park Café serves casual bistro-style dining for breakfast and lunch, while the adjacent Sunset Bar offers handcrafted cocktails throughout the day.

Bold flavors meet refined favorites at three new dining experiences

The intimate Italian restaurant Trattoria Rossa, which debuted this year on Celebrity Solstice, serves Roman cuisine. Guests can savor classic meat dishes and pastas made in-house daily, as well as dishes prepared tableside, paired with Italian-inspired cocktails and Celebrity Cruises’ award-winning wine selections.

The Forbes Travel Guide-rated Fine Cut Steakhouse redefined dining on the Edge Series and now joins Celebrity Reflection. Guests will experience 30-day dry-aged steaks, fresh seafood, and the elevated service synonymous with Celebrity Cruises.

Set against panoramic ocean views, Bora brings a Mediterranean-inspired rooftop concept to Celebrity Reflection. First introduced in November 2025 on Celebrity Xcel, the venue shifts from day to night. A lively brunch features customizable cocktails, while evenings are centered on chef-led tableside dishes and shareable plates.

Ship-wide enhancements for a new Reflection that’s all smiles

Guests of The Retreat, Celebrity Reflection’s exclusive suite class, will enjoy an enhanced The Retreat Sundeck with an oversized hot tub, and a redesigned The Retreat Lounge. Ship-wide enhancements extend to returning venues including Café Al Bacio, Cellar Masters, Casino, Art Gallery, World Class Bar, Martini Bar, Pool Bar, Passport Bar, the Fitness Center, and Camp at Sea – alongside Luminae, exclusive to guests of The Retreat, and Blu – exclusive to AquaClass guests.

Riviera Travel Unveils World’s First Solo-Exclusive River Cruise Ship For 2027

Riviera Travel has revealed plans to launch what it describes as the world’s first river cruise ship created exclusively for solo travellers, with the MS George Eliot scheduled to enter service in April 2027.

The new vessel will operate an entire season of solo-only river cruises across Europe, with every cabin designed for single occupancy and no solo supplement charged.

Riviera Travel ms George Eliot

The move marks a significant expansion of Riviera’s dedicated solo travel programme, which has grown in popularity as demand for independent travel continues to increase.

The cruise line said the MS George Eliot has been designed specifically with solo guests in mind, combining private accommodation with shared social spaces intended to encourage travellers to meet like-minded passengers throughout each sailing.

The ship will offer guests their own double cabin, a higher staff-to-guest ratio than on Riviera’s standard river ships and a programme of curated shore excursions led by expert Tour Managers.

The line also says the reduced passenger numbers will provide more space on board, including shorter queues during dining.

The maiden voyage, a Spring in the Netherlands: Amsterdam & the Tulips cruise, is already sold out.

Solo Sailings Across Europe

Following its inaugural cruise, the MS George Eliot will spend the 2027 season operating a range of itineraries across some of Europe’s best-known rivers.

Riviera Travel Drinks

Scheduled departures include multiple sailings of The Blue Danube River Cruise for Solo Travellers between June and October, along with Cruise the Heart of Europe: Journey Along the Rhine, Main and Danube, Rhine Cruise to Switzerland, Rhine and Moselle River Cruise, and a selection of festive itineraries during December.

Christmas and New Year departures are also planned, including Danube Christmas market cruises, a Christmas on the Danube sailing and a New Year cruise departing on 30th December 2027.

“We are so excited that from April 2027 the George Eliot will become the world’s first solo-exclusive river cruise ship. This really shows our dedication to solo travellers and will allow us to offer a much larger choice of dates with solo river cruises operating all season.”

Linda Harris, Solos Product Manager at Riviera Travel

Growing Demand For Solo Cruising

The launch reflects the continued growth of the solo travel market, with more cruise lines expanding their offering for passengers travelling alone.

Ocean cruise operators including Norwegian Cruise Line, Virgin Voyages and several luxury brands have introduced more single cabins or reduced supplements in recent years as solo cruising has become increasingly popular. However, dedicated ships exclusively for solo guests remain extremely rare.

By assigning every cabin to a single traveller and operating an entire season solely for solo passengers, Riviera Travel is positioning the MS George Eliot as a unique product within the river cruise market.

The 2027 programme includes sailings through Austria, Germany, Hungary, Slovakia, France, Switzerland and the Netherlands, with cruise durations ranging from five nights to 15 days.

Prices currently start from £1,949 per person for six-day festive itineraries, rising to £5,899 per person for the 15-day Heart of Europe voyage.

Disney Cruise Line’s Website Going Dark Tomorrow for 24 Hours: Outage Details

If you’re thinking about booking a Disney Cruise or need to make changes to an existing reservation, you should definitely pay attention to recent announcement from the cruise line.

Disney Cruise Line ship up close

Disney Cruise Line just announced a full 24-hour maintenance window for their reservation system. This means the entire booking system will go dark.

No booking, checking in, no reviewing current reservations.

It starts tomorrow, Thursday, July 9 at 4:00 AM Eastern and runs until 4:00 AM Eastern on Friday, July 10.

No need to panic though. Disney has been pretty clear about this on their site. It’s a planned upgrade, not some surprise outage.

They’ve done these before, and things usually come back online as scheduled.

What Is Unavailable During the Outage

According to Disney’s official notice, a wide range of services will be completely dark during the maintenance window:

“During this time, Guests will not be able to make or access a reservation online or through our Contact Center. Online Check-in, Cruise Activity and Port Adventure bookings will also be unavailable.”

Because the Contact Center is included in the downtime, phone support for reservations will also likely be limited.

New Payment Deadline Extension

If your final payment or deposit is due during the downtime, Disney is giving everyone a grace period.

The announcement stated that:

“Guests with deposits or final payments due during this period will have until Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 10:00 PM (EDT) to make their payment.”

That’s a helpful extension so no one loses their booking due to the tech updates.

We’ve sailed with Disney multiple times over the years, and their booking system (just like the cruising experience on board) is usually super smooth.

The good thing is they give advance notice, so people aren’t caught off guard.

What You Should Do Right Now

If you have something time-sensitive, try to handle it today.

If you’re working with a travel advisor, give them a heads up. A lot of agents can still work behind the scenes on some things even when the public site is down, but I wouldn’t rely on this.

Once everything is back up on Friday morning, Disney said they “look forward to assisting you with your cruise vacation planning once our systems return.” From there, it should be business as usual.

This kind of thing doesn’t happen often, but when it does, it’s smart to plan around it. We’ll keep an eye on things and let you know if anything changes.

MSC Cruises Launches Digital Remote Check-In At Seattle Airport

MSC Cruises has introduced a new Digital Remote Check-In solution at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, enabling passengers to complete cruise formalities before reaching the terminal. The technology, launched during MSC Poesia’s inaugural Alaska season, allows guests using the line’s official airport transfers to bypass traditional check-in queues and proceed directly to boarding.

MSC Poesia

Revolutionary Technology Transforms Traditional Port Procedures

The innovative system represents a significant departure from conventional cruise embarkation processes that have remained largely unchanged for decades. By relocating check-in procedures from the cruise terminal to the airport, MSC Cruises is addressing one of the most common pain points in the cruise experience – the often lengthy wait times at the port before passengers can board their vessel.

Guests travelling on MSC Cruises’ official airport transfer services now complete all necessary documentation and verification steps at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport itself. This advance processing eliminates the need for passengers to queue at check-in desks upon arrival at the cruise terminal, fundamentally changing the flow of the embarkation day.

Direct-To-Boarding Experience Enhances Guest Satisfaction

According to the company’s official announcement, passengers who utilise the Digital Remote Check-In service can proceed straight to security screening and boarding upon arrival at the cruise terminal. This streamlined approach significantly reduces the time between arriving at the port and stepping aboard the ship, allowing guests to begin their holiday experience considerably earlier than under traditional embarkation protocols.

The technology effectively separates the administrative aspects of cruise check-in from the physical boarding process. By handling document verification, identification checks, and other formalities at the airport, the terminal experience becomes focused purely on security screening and the actual boarding procedure itself.

This represents a notable improvement in operational efficiency for both the cruise line and its passengers. For guests, it means less time standing in queues and more time enjoying onboard amenities from the moment they arrive at the terminal.

MSC Poesia Alaska Season Serves As Testing Ground

The Digital Remote Check-In solution made its debut during MSC Poesia’s inaugural Alaska season operating from Seattle. The timing of this launch demonstrates MSC Cruises’ strategy of introducing new guest-facing technology in key markets where the cruise line is expanding its presence and building brand recognition.

MSC Poesia

MSC Poesia represents the company’s first vessel to offer a full season of Alaska cruises from Seattle, marking an important milestone in MSC’s North American growth strategy. The ship operates seven-night roundtrip voyages from the Pacific Northwest port, visiting popular Alaska destinations including Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, and Victoria, British Columbia.

By pairing the launch of new technology with the inaugural season of a vessel in a key market, MSC Cruises creates a differentiated experience that sets the ship apart from competitors operating in the crowded Alaska cruise market. The Digital Remote Check-In becomes a unique selling point that may influence booking decisions among passengers comparing various cruise options.

Expansion Plans Target Multiple Guest Touch Points

MSC Cruises has confirmed that the Digital Remote Check-In solution will extend beyond airport arrivals to encompass hotels and other selected locations where guests begin their cruise journeys. This broader implementation strategy suggests the technology platform has been designed with flexibility and scalability in mind from the outset.

MSC Poesia Seattle for Alaska Season

The expansion to hotels is particularly significant, as many cruise passengers spend one or more nights in the departure city before their cruise. By enabling check-in at hotel locations, MSC can capture guests even earlier in their journey and further reduce congestion at the cruise terminal itself.

Other selected locations could potentially include downtown visitor centres, railway stations, or dedicated pre-cruise facilities. The company’s announcement left the specific locations unidentified, suggesting plans remain under development for various markets based on local infrastructure and passenger flow patterns.

Global Rollout Strategy Follows Seattle Success

Following the Seattle launch, MSC Cruises announced plans to progressively implement Digital Remote Check-In across additional ports throughout its global network. This phased approach allows the company to refine the technology and operational procedures based on real-world experience before expanding to other markets.

The cruise line operates from dozens of homeports worldwide, spanning Europe, the Caribbean, South America, Asia, and the Middle East. A global rollout of remote check-in technology represents a substantial operational undertaking requiring coordination with airport authorities, port facilities, ground transportation providers, and local regulatory bodies in numerous jurisdictions.

Different markets may present unique challenges based on local infrastructure, security requirements, and regulatory frameworks. The progressive rollout strategy enables MSC to adapt the solution to regional variations whilst maintaining a consistent core experience for guests regardless of departure port.

Technology Investment Aligns With Industry Trends

The Digital Remote Check-In initiative underscores MSC Cruises’ commitment to leveraging smart technology to enhance the guest experience, according to the company’s official statement. This investment aligns with broader industry trends seeing cruise lines increasingly adopt digital solutions to streamline operations and improve passenger satisfaction.

Cruise lines across the industry have invested heavily in mobile applications, digital key cards, wearable payment devices, and other technologies designed to reduce friction points throughout the guest journey. MSC’s remote check-in solution represents the next evolution of this trend, extending digital convenience to the pre-embarkation phase of the cruise experience.

The integration of operations mentioned by MSC suggests the Digital Remote Check-In system connects with the company’s broader suite of digital tools and backend systems. This integration enables real-time data sharing between airport check-in points, ground transportation, and the cruise terminal, ensuring all parties have current information about guest status and location.

Operational Efficiency Gains Benefit Multiple Stakeholders

MSC Cruises stated that the remote check-in solution will strengthen efficiency, accuracy, and the overall quality of the guest experience. These benefits extend beyond passengers to encompass the cruise line’s operations and the broader port ecosystem.

For terminal operations, pre-processing guests at remote locations reduces crowding in embarkation halls and allows more predictable passenger flow throughout the boarding period. This can lead to reduced staffing requirements at check-in desks, with personnel redeployed to other guest service functions or eliminated from the cost structure entirely.

Enhanced accuracy results from conducting document verification and check-in procedures in controlled airport environments rather than crowded terminal settings where mistakes are more likely to occur. Digital systems also reduce manual data entry errors and ensure information collected at check-in accurately populates shipboard systems.

Port authorities benefit from reduced congestion around cruise terminals, particularly important in urban ports where cruise facilities share infrastructure with other maritime operations. Smoother embarkation processes also reduce the risk of sailing delays caused by late-boarding passengers.

Competitive Positioning In North American Market

The launch of Digital Remote Check-In in Seattle carries particular significance given MSC Cruises’ relatively recent expansion into the North American market. The Swiss-based cruise line has invested substantially in building brand awareness among North American passengers, who represent the world’s largest source market for cruise travel.

Innovative guest-facing technology provides MSC with a competitive differentiator in a market dominated by established North American cruise brands with decades of local presence and strong customer loyalty. By offering conveniences unavailable on competitor vessels, MSC can attract passengers willing to try a less familiar cruise line in exchange for enhanced experiences.

The Alaska market specifically attracts a high proportion of first-time and occasional cruisers drawn by the destination rather than particular cruise brands. These passengers may prove more receptive to trying MSC Cruises if the embarkation experience demonstrates clear advantages over alternative options, potentially leading to repeat bookings on the company’s vessels in other markets.
