The dream of taking your dog on a cruise is finally becoming a reality as the fun American cruise line, Margaritaville At Sea, is partnering with new company, Cruise Tails, to offer pet-friendly cruises.
With 250 lucky dogs (and their humans!) invited aboard, this is your chance to create memories that’ll have tails wagging long after you disembark.
But, there are some caveats. Here’s everything you need to know before you and your furry friend set sail…
1. Your chance of getting a place is limited
With around 90 million pet dogs in the United States, and only space for 250 dogs on board, demand for the cruises is set to be huge.
You can’t just book a cabin for yourself and your dog. Instead, you’ll need to fill in an application form and hope that you’re chosen to be one of the lucky families that gets to set sail.
2. Group applications get priority
Margaritaville At Sea’s ship, Islander, has 1,100 staterooms. The hard limit of 250 dogs means that most staterooms won’t actaully have dogs inside.
To deal with this, Cruise Tails is giving priority to groups who book two or more cabins with only one dog. So if you want to bring a single dog and four or more humans, you’re much more likley to get a place on board.
3. Every dog gets a private bathroom
Each pet-friendly cabin is thoughtfully designed with your dog’s comfort in mind. One standout feature is the private relief station conveniently located on every balcony.
These stations are equipped with materials that make cleanup a breeze, ensuring a clean and hassle-free experience. You can relax knowing that in the early morning or late at night, your furry friend can take care of business without the need to trek across the ship.
4. Dogs won’t be allowed in dining rooms
It’s expected that health regulations require that dogs won’t be allowed in any of the places where humans eat meals. What that also means is that dogs will probably be required to be left in cabins for at least some part of the day. Of course, room service is also available.
5. Cruisers will be featured on social media
If you’re camera shy or in a witness protection program, this isn’t the cruise for you! All guests will be asked to sign a waiver which allows any photos of them and their dogs to be used on social media and other marketing channels.
You may also be expected to share your own photos. According to the Cruise Tails website, Guests may also be asked to try out pet products and post about them online as part of the deal.
6. There’s a packed schedule of activities
This cruise is packed with activities designed to keep tails wagging and spirits high!
From dazzling costume contests where your pup can strut their stuff in style to entertaining dog shows that highlight the unique talents of canine cruisers, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
For those looking to learn, expert-led dog training seminars will offer valuable tips and tricks, making this not just a vacation but a bonding and learning experience for you and your pooch.
There are even rumours of an 80s night and a formal night, for both humans and dogs. So you’d better start shopping for outfits.
7. Not all dog breeds will be allowed
Cruise Tails hasn’t yet released information about which dogs specifically will be banned from the ship, but it’s expected that not all breeds will be welcomed.
Margaritaville already allows dogs at several of its land-based resorts in the United States. However, depending on the resort their are weight limites for dogs which vary between 30lbs and 100lbs.
It’s not yet known if Margaritaville At Sea will have size or weight limits for dogs. But 30lb is only the size of a French Bulldog, so this could limit a lot of dogs from applying.
It’s expected that breeds such as Boxers, Staffordshire Terriers, Rottweilers, Akitas, German Shepherds, Doberman Pinschers, Mastiffs, Malamutes, Great Danes, Cane Corso, Chow Chows, Huskies and Wolf Hybrids may also not be allowed.
8. Dogs must remain on a leash
For everyone’s safety and comfort, all dogs must remain leashed while exploring the ship. This ensures that all canine guests can enjoy the cruise without any unexpected encounters or mishaps.
Of course, you can let your dog off the leash inside your cabin, but when strolling on the deck, visiting designated play areas, or heading to one of the many fun activities, a leash will ensures that your pet stays under control and everyone aboard has a stress-free experience.
9. Vaccinations are mandatory
You may be surprised to learn that most dog owners don’t keep up to date with their pets vaccinations. However, vaccinations will be required for dogs to board. These will likely include the core vaccines such as rabies, distemper, adenovirus and parvovirus. However, others may be required too.
There could also be a requirement for dogs to be up to date with worming and flea-prevention treatments. Fleas can be notiriously tricky to eradicate from carpets and furniture so the cruise line will almost certainly want protocols in place to keep them off the ship.
10. Dogs can’t go anywhere near the pool
While the idea of swimming with your dog may sound fun, it just wouldn’t be practical. The fur would likely clog the filter, and it wouldn’t take long for the pool to change colour from blue to something less enticing!
For hygiene reasons, dogs won’t be allowed on the pool deck at all. And they certainly won’t be allowed down the waterslide! If you want to enjoy a swim, you’ll be expected to leave your dog in the cabin or with a family member elsewhere on the ship.
However, there will be dog-friendly splash sessions that will allow your dog to cool off when they need to.
11. Two dates are planned for the cruise
The first cruise is set to depart in November 2025. If that is successful, then Cruise Tails hopes to organise a second dog-friendly cruise around March to May 2026.
There’s also a chance that the second cruise may be open to more than 250 dogs. So if your application isn’t successful the first time around, it’s definitely worth trying again.
12. The cruise will sail from Tampa, Florida
It’s not yet been announced where the cruise will set sail to or how long it will be. Looking at the itineraries for November 2025, we can see that Islander is sceduled to make 4- to 7-night round-trips from Tampa, Florida.
Restrictions may prevent dogs from disembarking the ship outside of the USA. However, the ship could potentially call at Key West, offering families the chance to visit one of the many dog-friendly beaches together.
13. There will be a vet onboard
The Islander will have a vet onboard as well as a doctor, so whether you or your dog needs medical attention, you don’t need to worry.
14. Service dogs are not allowed
Registered service dogs are already allowed on most cruise ships and so this cruise is only open to pet dogs, giving them a chance to have an experience that they wouldn’t usually be allowed to have.
15. Jobs are available for dog lovers
Do you love dogs? Perhaps you could work on the ship. Cruise Tails has said that they’re recruiting for dog walkers, groomers and even doggy butlers! You can join the mailing list to keep updated about any opportunities.

Margaritaville at Sea has announced plans a dog-friendly voyage, scheduled for November 2025.
The unique sailing is being organised in partnership with Cruise Tails and Expedia Cruises of West Orlando and will welcome up to 250 canine passengers.
The cruise will depart from Port Tampa Bay aboard the Margaritaville at Sea’s flagship vessel, Islander. While the exact date and itinerary have not been disclosed, a waitlist for dog owners interested in the voyage will open in early December 2024.
The cruise aims to provide a memorable experience for both pets and their owners.
“I consider my Yorkie, Louis, to be part of my family, and for years I missed out on the ‘family reunion’ cruise because I will not travel without him…

Activities planned for the voyage include costume contests, dog shows, parades, guest speakers, and training advice sessions. There will also be puppy massages, grooming services, and splash stations for the dogs.
Travelling with pets will involve a special application process. Dogs must be fully vaccinated, accompanied by a health certificate signed by a licensed veterinarian, and remain in designated pet-friendly areas on the ship.
A “Pet Butler” will be assigned to each dog-owning family to maintain cleanliness and comfort during the trip.
Pet-friendly staterooms will include private relief areas on balconies, and additional relief areas may be set up in other parts of the ship.
However, dogs will not be allowed in restaurants, the casino, pool decks, or the spa due to health regulations. And dogs must be on a leash when in any public area.
Islander, formerly known as Costa Atlantica, is an 85,619-gross-ton vessel that can host 2,114 passengers at double occupancy. The ship currently operates 4- and 5-night itineraries to destinations like Cozumel, Mexico, and Key West.
In 2025, it will begin offering 6- and 7-night sailings to destinations including Belize, Roatan, and Ocho Rios.
While the exact itinerary for the dog-friendly cruise is yet to be revealed, it will align with the ship’s November 2025 schedule.
Only 250 dogs will be allowed on this inaugural sailing, and some restrictions on breeds, size, or the number of dogs per cabin may apply, though these details are still being finalised.
Interestingly, service dogs will not be permitted on this voyage, as they already have access to standard cruises.

Cruise Tails FAQs
Usually, service dogs are permitted on cruise ships provided they have the right certification. Cruise lines are strict on this, to avoid anyone claiming their dog is an emotional support dog just to get their pet onboard.
If the November 2025 sailing proves successful, plans for a second dog-friendly voyage are being considered for early 2026.
Technically, dogs are currently permitted on some Cunard transatlantic cruises. However, they must remain in kennels onboard the ship at all times.
This will be the first ocean cruise that is clearly aimed at dog owners, allowing the dogs in the staterooms themselves.
A couple of river cruise ships in Germany, run by 1AVista Reisen, offer dog-friendly cruises and dogs are permitted on some ferry trips too, such as with Stenna and Brittany.
There will definitely be some practical hurdles to cross, such as controlling dogs in outdoor spaces such as pool areas and making sure the ship stays hygienic.
However I’d love to go on this cruise! But opinion on Facebook has definitely been split whenever I’ve asked…

This is a small metal medallion that all guests are given when they book with Princess Cruises. Your Medallion is a wearable device that offers a ton of functionality. It streamlines the boarding process, acts as your room key and lets you pay for items on board.
It acts as a homing beacon for you and your party too. You can check the Medallion app to find your family on the ship, and order drinks or food for delivery and it’ll be brought right to you – because the crew can see your location via your Medallion as well.
It even lets younger guests play games in different interactive areas of the ship!

For something so small, the Medallion really makes a huge difference to the cruise experience, and Princess fans love it.

One of the things passengers love most is that staff members take the time to stop, chat and make you feel at home – no rush, no hurry.
Whether it’s a server in the dining room remembering your favourite drink, or a room steward greeting you by name, the service feels both personal and sincere.

Many guests appreciate the value here, especially when you consider that buying the Plus drinks package alone costs roughly the same as buying the Plus fare with loads more included! (I’ve never understood this!)
The Premier package goes a step further. It adds extras like speciality dining and a wider selection of drinks, including top-shelf spirits and wines. Premium is ideal for guests who want a touch of luxury, with more choice and convenience wrapped into a single package.
Compared to other cruise lines, Princess Cruises’ bundled options offer significant value. Guests love not having to worry about unexpected charges piling up, letting them enjoy their cruise with peace of mind.
This smart option has made Princess a favourite for those who appreciate flexibility and a seamless, all-in-one experience.

Alfredo’s Pizzeria is another particular standout. Many guests rave about the fresh, hand-tossed pizzas cooked in a brick oven. For pizza lovers, it’s an unexpected treat to find such quality at sea. I absolutely adored the vegan pizza and went back again a few days later!
Alfredo’s Pizzeria used to be free but now does have a charge, which is a shame. You do get some meals included with the Plus package, and it’s free with Premium.

These groups are great because you’re connecting with people who share your passion and who often have a wealth of experience.
Some members may even post deals they’ve found, along with advice on how to snag the best cabins or perks. Plus, if you’re new to cruising, it’s a fantastic way to learn from seasoned pros who are happy to share their wisdom.
Just type “cruise deals” or “cruise tips” into Facebook’s search bar, and you’ll find groups to join in no time.
It’s a good idea to join groups about cruising in general, such as my Cruise Chat group, but also pick some for your favourite cruise line or ship.
Also try looking for groups related to your cruise niche, if you have one. The Solo Cruise Form by Passion For Cruises is great for single travellers, as an example, and they even host meet-ups in the UK for members!
4. Follow cruise lines on social media
Sometimes the best deals aren’t because someone has an insider tip or an exclusive special offer. Sometimes it’s as simple as a cruise line’s promotion being pretty good.
When a cruise line starts a promotion, they’ll usually shout about it on social media, so follow them to get ahead of the curve and find out as soon as something good launches.
It’s also a great way to stay updated on exciting new itineraries or special events onboard their ships.
5. Read cruise blogs for insider tips
There’s nothing quite like learning from someone who’s been there, done that, and got the nautical T-shirt.
Cruise blogs (like this one!) are packed with insider knowledge, including tips on how to save money, the best ways to use onboard credit, and secrets to making the most of your time on board.
You’ll also find reviews of cruise lines, ships, and destinations, helping you choose the best fit for your next adventure. Bonus: Many cruise bloggers also share deals they come across or are tipped off about!

6. Join Reddit communities about cruising
If you’re not already a Redditor, it’s worth creating an account just to access the cruise-related communities on the platform.
Subreddits like r/Cruise are filled with helpful discussions about everything from packing tips to where to find the best deals.
You’ll also find threads where cruisers share discount codes or alerts for price drops.
The platform is a treasure trove of information, and because it’s discussion-based, you can ask questions and get personalised advice from fellow cruise enthusiasts.
(Also, there is – without exception – always a funny thread on subreddits like r/Cruise to get lost in, whether it’s about weird complaints, mishaps onboard or something else!)
7. Check travel agencies
It might sound old-school, but travel agencies can still be a great source of cruise deals, especially if you attend their in-person events or sign up for their newsletters.
Many agencies have exclusive partnerships with cruise lines, meaning they can offer deals or perks like free upgrades or onboard credits that you won’t find anywhere else.
Pro tip: Look out for local agencies that specialise in cruises – they often have the best connections!
And don’t be afraid to pop into a physical travel agency to have a natter and find out more. Sure, they’ve probably put their best deals in the window to attract you in, but they might have something else to surprise you with.
If you prefer to build up a personal connection with the cruise experts, YouTube is your friend.
Cruise YouTubers often post vlogs of their trips, including detailed reviews of ships, itineraries, and onboard experiences.
They’ll frequently share tips on saving money, and sometimes they’re even offered deals to pass along to their viewers.
Plus, it’s a fun way to get excited about your upcoming trip by seeing what you can expect!
9. Consider sale seasons
At certain times in the year, you might get a better deal for a cruise. BUT I wouldn’t recommend always waiting for those periods, because you can miss out on itineraries that sell out quickly.
As a guide, the best deals can usually be had in January, or around Black Friday. But there’s often cruise lines with summer sales too.
Again, don’t hold off if you find a good cruise deal. It may not get any better during these windows, and you might just miss out on a great price.
However, definitely make sure you’re following all the rest of these tips around those key sale periods, because you might then find a deal that blows you away.

TUI River Cruises celebrated a major milestone with the launch of its first Nile river cruise ship, the TUI Al Horeya, during a special blessing ceremony held on the Nile in Luxor.
The event featured a traditional “Prayer to Hapi” ritual, honouring the ancient Egyptian god of the Nile and invoking blessings for safe voyages.
As part of the ceremony, 100 biodegradable candles were set afloat on the river. Guests participated by making personal wishes and placing the candles in the water, alongside a symbolic papyrus scroll inscribed with “TUI Al Horeya” in Arabic.
The festivities continued onboard the ship with a vibrant celebration, including live performances by Whirling Dervishes, a sand artist narrating the history of the Nile, and a gala dinner accompanied by entertainment from TUI’s team.
After the onboard festivities, the TUI Al Horeya began her inaugural journey, sailing toward Luxor Temple.

Cruise ships are equipped with all kinds of monitors and tools to help detect storms, so that they can sail out of their path.
But sometimes storms can creep up quickly, or there’s just no avoiding it. When that happens, things can get a little scary.
On a recent cruise, I experienced some bad weather which required us to hold on to our wine glasses while eating as some started falling over! But that’s nothing compared to what some have witnessed…
Here are some real stories of passengers who have endured extreme storms while at sea:
This tale shows that storms can be very scary indeed! In the Spring of 2005, aboard the MV Explorer for Semester at Sea, the North Pacific delivered a harrowing experience.
The ship encountered waves 60 feet high and winds of 120mph, caused by a convergence of two storms. The waves shattered the bridge windows and flooded the bridge, disabling all four navigation engines.
For 16 hours, the ship was at the mercy of the ocean, tilting up to 37 degrees. Everyone donned life jackets and made their way to the fifth deck where the lifeboats were, though launching them in such weather was impossible. With the frigid North Pacific waters in January, the life expectancy if you went overboard was just seven minutes.
Remarkably, seasickness was minimal since the crew and passengers had already endured a week of 20-foot waves. So it was just the fear caused by these incredible waves, with the narrator saying they accepted death that day. Yikes.
A crew member tells the story of how, on their first weekend working aboard a cruise ship in 2016, they sailed through Storm Katie off the British coast. The storm brought hurricane-level winds over 90mph, exceeding the Beaufort scale’s Force 12. For the first few days, the rolling and turbulence were extreme.
Working in the onboard stores, the crew witnessed chaos as stock was thrown off shelves, with Swarovski crystal sculptures swept away like debris. Each morning, the stockroom appeared looted. The bars and galley departments faced even worse chaos.
The ship maintained a permanent list to one side, making simple tasks like walking feel like struggling up a steep hill. Upon returning to normal, adjusting to the ship’s lean was difficult, leading to mishaps like hitting the showerhead.
Shows and entertainment were cancelled, leaving guests with little to do but stay in their cabins. Seasickness was rampant. Compounding the misery, a recent norovirus outbreak had triggered a ‘red level’ hygiene alert. This meant rigorous sanitisation protocols, additional duties for serving food, and a complete loss of deck privileges and events for the crew.
For two or three days, everyone onboard faced a perfect storm of misery. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries or major damage, but the experience gave the worst first impression of the job possible.
This one was so bad that it made the news in the UK. A passenger talked about their cruise on Saga’s Spirit of Discovery in 2023, on a round-trip cruise to the Canary Islands.
The ship sailed through a storm in the Bay of Biscay to reach La Coruna, only to find that the port was closed, leaving the ship stranded to face the stormy weather. It was so bad that glass balconies were broken and passengers were flung around the ship. Bearing in mind this was a Saga cruise, with mainly elderly passengers, that placed lives at risk.
Five people needed medical treatment, and 100 out of 1,000 suffered some form of minor injury. Passengers said that some guests were writing texts to their loved ones, convinced they were going to die.
In the end, everyone was okay but it was definitely a scary time.
On a November cruise departing from Miami, the weather was initially clear and sunny. However, just 30 minutes out, the ship encountered rough seas and strong winds.
As the passenger tells it, there was no rain but the turbulence was severe enough to make even crew members sick. This overwhelmed the staff’s ability to even keep the bathrooms looking respectable.
The itinerary included a day on an island, but the seas were too rough for the tender boats to approach the ship, leading to another day on choppy waters.
Spa appointments were booked but the therapist, working on her first cruise, was too sick to provide much service. Surprisingly, many passengers continued their day unaffected by the rough conditions, eating and drinking as normal.
After three days of turmoil, the ship returned to Miami, where the weather immediately cleared up, revealing beautiful skies for the remainder of the trip. Typical, right?
In 1995, aboard the old Royal Princess with 1,200 passengers on a transatlantic voyage to New York, a severe storm forced the captain to skip docking in Greenland. The passengers telling this story, whose cabin was far forward, prepared by securing their belongings. But it wasn’t enough.
A glass flew off the bathroom counter and shattered. They used their luggage to block the closet doors from banging open all night, and tried to sleep despite the intense up-and-down motion. They were flying out of bed, and felt like they needed seat belts to even try to sleep!
On the fifth floor above the waterline, they watched waves crashing against the windows above. Eventually, they moved to a lower deck to reduce the motion and seasickness. After 24 hours, the storm finally abated. They sailed on the Royal Princess again, although the husband never appreciated the reminder that they were near where the Titanic sank.
One cruise passenger tells how she experienced not one but two extreme cruises due to the weather, with all the chaos of flying pool chairs and furniture.
The crew efficiently closed off outside deck access on both cruises and ushered everyone indoors, attending to panicked or injured passengers. Once everyone was safely inside, the atmosphere transformed into one of camaraderie and gratitude.
Passengers showed kindness by sharing seasickness medication and assisting older individuals. The crew’s professionalism earned them random standing ovations throughout the remainder of the voyages. This passenger even said the two cruises remained some of their favourites!
A passenger told the story of encountering rough seas on their very first cruise, causing the ship to rock intensely. Many experienced seasickness, resulting in an unfortunate incident of vomiting over a white dress during the ship’s ‘white night’ event.
Despite the discomfort, the passenger said their only regret was not being able to finish the delicious cream of mushroom soup served in the main dining room!
The passenger forgot to bring Dramamine but purchased some upon reaching port, having found previously purchased bands ineffective. Despite the seasickness, they still thoroughly enjoyed their first cruise experience and has taken more cruises since.
One cruise guest told the story of a cruise on Carnival’s Mardi Gras, when they encountered a night of very rough seas. While sleeping was enjoyable, walking became challenging due to sudden shifts, though they admit the drinks package probably hadn’t helped!
However, the real challenge was the widespread seasickness among passengers. This resulted in vomit appearing everywhere: elevators, corners, trash cans, bathrooms and hallways. Despite the unpleasantness, the cleaning staff swiftly had addressed the mess by breakfast time.
Conversations the next day revolved around the turbulent night, with nearly every interaction starting with enquiries about the experience. As you would expect, really. Kudos to the crew for getting everything cleaned up so fast!
A passenger tells how they encountered violent waves that caused the ship to lurch forwards and backwards. In their own words, they felt like Neil Armstrong walking on the moon!
While the ship was moving a lot, these passengers managed to find the fun in it, timing their jumps with the movement to get up to six feet in the air!
They also recommended enjoying alcohol during these rough seas, but I’m not sure how good that advice really is!
During a crossing from Australia to New Zealand, known for its rough waters, one guest (then a teenager) was loving the storms initially, playing in the pool despite the water sloshing from side to side. However, conditions worsened rapidly, leading to widespread seasickness and difficulty walking as the ship juddered violently.
The situation was further complicated by a norovirus outbreak. The passenger’s sister was the first to fall ill, resulting in the entire family being quarantined together. Sharing a bathroom under such conditions made for a very unpleasant experience!
Despite the challenges, the narrator recalls having a somewhat good time. Their sister was a wheelchair user and, before anyone got sick, they took advantage of the listing boat by wheeling her to one end of a hallway and letting her go, so she could enjoy the ride! Hopefully, they had her consent…
Having experienced serious storms while cruising, a frequent cruiser has said that the best approach is to stay calm and trust the ship’s crew. Cruise ships are designed for rough seas, and crews will do everything possible to avoid and counteract the storm.
The guest says that you should take care to secure loose items in the cabin, like books and glasses. Heading to public areas to stay with the crew and other passengers usually creates a comforting and secure atmosphere.
In severe storms, the cruiser remains mindful and alert, keeping a cell phone close by in case of emergency.
Storms at sea can get pretty dramatic at times, and a lot of people tend to get sick when ships start to list. But there are some people that find even the most dramatic storms entertaining too.
Obviously, if furniture is flying around then you need to be careful, but ships can typically withstand a lot of punishment. So just get to a low deck and try to relax as you see out the storm.
