First Impressions of Star of the Seas, Royal Caribbean’s Newest Cruise Ship

This past week, I had the opportunity to be one of the first to step on board Royal Caribbean’s newest and largest cruise ship, Star of the Seas.

Royal Caribbean's Star of the Seas

It was not a traditional sailing, Royal Caribbean invited me on board for a first look at this new ship ahead of its debut.  We sailed from Ponce, Puerto Rico to Port Canaveral at around 10% capacity.

I tell you that because it will help you understand as you read this article. If you hardly see anyone else in the photos, this is why.

Since the ship was two weeks away from its inaugural cruise, they were still putting the finishing touches on shows and entertainment.

After spending three days on Star of the Seas, here are my first impressions of this newest ship from Royal Caribbean.

Back to the Future The Musical

Back to the Future is one of my favorite movie trilogies of all time. Star of the Seas is the first cruise ship to feature Back to the Future The Musical.

They gave us a 20 minute preview of this new show and I sat right in the front row. All I can say is, WOW! Yes, there’s a DeLorean and it’s hand down one of the top shows I’ve seen on a cruise.

Back to the Future DeLorean Star of the Seas

I’m not going to give away any spoilers and there was a no photo or video policy during our preview.

Those who know me know that I am not big on watching cruise shows, they just don’t personally interest me much. However, I would line up early to see Back to the Future on Star of the Seas, it was like I was right on the movie set.

The actor who played George McFly was absolutely incredible, he was a carbon copy of Crispin Glover in the trilogy.

Royal Caribbean also raised the bar for their ice skating show Sol in Absolute Zero. The acrobatic moves they incorporated at the end of the show had the crowd going wild.

Ship

You can take a photo tour of Star of the Seas below that we posted to our Cruise Fever Facebook page.

Since Star of the Seas is a sister ship to Icon of the Seas, they are very much alike. Royal Caribbean made a few changes but there’s no need to fix what isn’t broken.

Artwork around the ship is different and The AquaDome Market food court has new options that include a new Thai eatery.

Lincoln Park Supper Club has a 1930’s Chicago theme instead of a 1920s New York theme.

infinity pool star of the seas

On the pool deck, the swings are gone and there’s now more loungers for cruisers to soak up the sun.

It’s such a great class of ship that there wasn’t a need to change much.

Surfside is such an awesome area for families and it has everything they need. They can stay here the entire day since it was a waterpark for kids, pools, several dining options and an arcade.

surfside star of the seas

There really is something for everyone onboard Star of the Seas.

Crew

The crew on Star of the Seas delivered the same great service that Royal Caribbean always offers. One of the crew members remembered my name the day we were at CocoCay.

From my room steward to our waiter at Coastal Kitchen, I can’t say enough good things about them.

Cabin

I stayed in an Infinite Balcony stateroom on deck 9. This was my first time staying in one on Royal Caribbean (I have stayed in them on their sister cruise line Celebrity Cruises).

The more I stay in one of these cabins, the more I like them. I love the extra room you get because the “balcony” is now part of your cabin.

You also get the best view from your cabin since you have a floor to ceiling window with no obstructions. There is a curtain you can close to block out light and make the balcony area a separate space.

infinite balcony star of the seas

There was also a pretty roomy shower and plenty of power outlets.

Star of the Seas is currently offering a few shakedown cruises and will depart on its inaugural voyage on August 16, 2025. A shakedown cruise is a non-revenue voyage where Royal Caribbean invites travel agents, media, friends & family etc. so they can work out the kinks before paying passengers board.

The cruise ship will sail a few short cruises from Port Canaveral before launching into year-round, seven-night sailings from Port Canaveral. You can see itineraries and prices for cruises on the ship here.

The ship will also be christened on August 20 in Port Canaveral. I will be onboard for the christening ceremony so stay tuned as I bring you more on this newest ship from Royal Caribbean.

Injured Water Slide Guest To Sue Royal Caribbean

A cruise guest injured on Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas after the Frightening Bolt waterslide broke mid-ride is now pursuing legal action against the cruise line.

Icon of the Seas Water Slide lawsuit

The passenger, who has not been identified, sustained lacerations to his legs and hands on 7th August 2025 when an acrylic glass section of the slide shattered.

The accident occurred on “the tallest waterslide at sea”, part of the Category 6 Waterpark, which features a 46-foot drop and a full 360-degree loop.

While the rider did not fall through the resulting hole, water poured from the slide onto loungers below, soaking sunbathers and creating slip hazards.

The ship’s medical team treated the man immediately, though the full extent of his injuries has not been disclosed.

Two days after disembarking in Miami on 9th August, the man announced through his legal representatives, Lipcon, Margulies & Winkleman, P.A., that he would be seeking compensation.

The Florida-based firm specialises in maritime and cruise injury cases and has recovered more than $500 million for clients.

“Cruise ships have a responsibility to ensure that the attractions they open and encourage passengers to use are safe,

“We are thankful for the trust this family has placed in us to represent them.”

Maritime attorney Alex Perez

Ongoing Investigation

The Frightening Bolt slide remained closed for the remainder of the voyage while engineers assessed the damage.

Royal Caribbean is investigating whether the failure was due to a manufacturing defect, installation problem, or unforeseen impact. No timeline has been given for repairs.

Some rumours had circulated online that the cause was the weight of the guest, but these appear to be completely unfounded – a reminder to always be careful of trusting what you read online.

The five other waterslides in the Category 6 Waterpark continue to operate normally, but the identical Frightening Bolt slide aboard Royal Caribbean’s new Star of the Seas has also been closed as a precaution.

The incident comes at an awkward time for the brand, with Star of the Seas currently being previewed by travel agents and media ahead of her official launch.

Royal Caribbean says guest safety is its top priority and that it often exceeds international requirements under the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) convention and the US Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act.

Carnival Makes Sail & Sign Statements Available Online

Carnival Cruise Line has made it easier to view your Sail & Sign statement after your cruise is over.

Carnival Vista docked at Celebration Key

Carnival has added Sail & Sign statements for all cruises over the past seven years to their website, Carnival.com. Past cruisers can now easily look up past statements (If they want to see how much they’ve spent) and here is how they can do it.

All you have to do is go to Carnival.com and log in to your VIFP account. Once you are logged in, click on “My Cruises”.

Under your cruise history, you will see every single Carnival cruise you have taken. Under the booking number, there will be a link that says “View Sail & Sign Statement”. Simply click on this link and you can view your statements.

The link will only appear for cruises taken over the last seven years.

The “responsible party” on the Sail & Sign account has access to the statements assigned to everyone on their account. Other individuals only have access to their own Sail & Sign accounts.

LIDO-DECK-FEATURED.jpg

Everything You’ve Ever Wanted to Know About the Lido Deck

Whether you’re about to set sail on your first cruise or you’re a seasoned traveller brushing up on cruise lingo, some terms can sound a little mysterious. Take “Lido Deck” for example, it might sound like insider jargon, but it’s actually one of the most exciting spots on the ship.

The Lido deck filled with guests

The Lido Deck is typically home to at least one outdoor pool, a sun deck, and plenty of places to eat and drink – often including the ship’s buffet. It’s the hub of activity, where you can soak up the sun, join in games or fitness classes, or simply relax with a cocktail in hand.

An outdoor swimming pool on the lido deck

Depending on the ship, you might also find jacuzzis, giant movie screens for evening films, kids’ play areas, snack stands serving ice cream and cold drinks, or even a spa and gym – all within steps of your deck chair.

In this guide, you’ll learn what the Lido Deck is all about and how to make the most of it on your cruise.

What the Term ‘Lido Deck’ Actually Means

The word “lido” comes from a place in Italy named “Lido di Venezia”. In the early 20th century, it was a beach resort where people swam and relaxed. The term then made its way to cruise ships to refer to the deck on a ship with an outdoor swimming pool, similar to a beach resort.

An empty swimming pool on the lido deck

This phrase makes people think about holidays, having fun, and feeling relaxed.

You Say Lee-Doh, I Say Lie-Doh…

In UK English, Lido is typically pronounced “lie-doh”. However, the Oxford English and Cambridge Dictionary both state that phonetically, lido is pronounced “liː.dəʊ” or “lee-doe”, from the Italian pronunciation. It is a topic that brings debate, as is often the case with words borrowed from other languages.

In short, it’s up to you whether you call it lie-doh or lee-doe. Whatever you prefer!

Where You’ll Find the Lido Deck

The Lido Deck is usually on the top floor of the cruise ship. However, this can vary depending on the design of the cruise ship. On many ships, it can be around the 9th to 11th floor, whereas newer, larger ships are as high as deck 16.

If you’re on a cruise soon, it’s always best to refer to the deck plan provided by the cruise line.

Leisure Facilities of a cruise ship

Cabins on the Lido Deck

Whether a Lido Deck cabin is a bad place to stay on a cruise ship depends on your preferences. Cruise customers often like the convenience of being close to facilities such as the swimming pool, bars and buffet. However, cabins on the Lido Deck can sometimes be noisier than other cabins, as they are close to busy areas of the ship.

Many of the reviews I’ve read from passengers staying on the Lido Deck report it to be their favourite place to stay on the ship due to the convenience. Also, some customer reviews have noted that the noise hasn’t been a problem, which they were surprised about.

Often, it’s the rooms directly below the Lido Deck that have the most noise.

Before booking your next cruise, it’s usually a good idea to look at the deck plan and read reviews from past passengers before choosing which room to stay in and whether the Lido Deck will suit you.

The image shows a row of empty lounge chairs lined up on the lido deck of the Grand Princess cruise ship, facing the open sea. The wooden deck gleams with a warm, sunlit hue, and a life preserver with "Grand Princess" is mounted on the railing. The tranquil ocean in the background complements the relaxed, inviting setup of the deck chairs.

Read more: 12 Things You Must ALWAYS Check On The Deck Plan

Lido Deck Tips for First-Timers

  • Go early for the best loungers – By mid-morning, prime spots by the pool are snapped up. Head out early if you want front-row sunbathing.
  • Don’t forget your cover-up – Many cruise lines require a shirt or cover-up when moving between the buffet and pool area.
  • Watch for slippery floors – Between splashes and spilt cocktails, it’s easy to forget the deck can get a little slippery.
  • Don’t miss the Sailaway party – A lively send-off when the ship first sets sail. The sail away party often includes music, dancing and entertainment from the crew.

Final Word

The Lido Deck is so much more than just ‘the pool deck’ – it’s the beating heart of the ship. Whether you’re there for early-morning laps, a lazy lunch in the sun, or late-night movies under the stars, it’s where some of the best cruise memories are made. Yes, it can be lively (and sometimes a little noisy), but that’s all part of the charm.

If you’re booking a cabin here, weigh up the unbeatable convenience against the chance of extra foot traffic. And next time someone mentions the Lido Deck, you can smile, because now you know exactly what it is, where it is, and why it’s worth a visit on your next cruise.

Dynamic lighting and music shift the venue from an energetic daytime vibe to a mellow nighttime ambiance. Pizza Palooza delivers fresh pizzas, which Carnival guests know and love fleetwide as a quick bite that’s perfect for sharing among friends. Rhythm & Rolls Deli rounds out the casual dining options with gourmet sandwiches.

Carnival Festivale will feature 1,000 interconnecting rooms, nearly 70 percent more than on the first three Excel-class vessels.

Norwegian-Star-NCL.jpg

Elderly Guest Goes Overboard During NCL Cruise

It has been a sombre day aboard Norwegian Star following confirmation of an overboard incident during the ship’s current transatlantic voyage.

Norwegian Star NCL

The 14-night, one-way cruise departed New York on 7th August 2025 and is bound for Reykjavik, Iceland, with port calls in Canada, Greenland, and Iceland along the way.

The emergency unfolded at around 5 am on Tuesday, 12th August, while the vessel was sailing in the waters of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, en route to Nuuk, Greenland.

Passengers reported being awoken by a series of short blasts from the ship’s horn, followed by a “Code Oscar” announcement – the emergency code used to signal a person overboard.

Several guests have claimed to have seen lifeboats lowered and one reported witnessing a recovery.

While there is speculation that the person did not survive, this has not been officially confirmed.

Zodiac boat in Greenland
The ship was en route to Greenland at the time

The frigid water temperatures in the region – currently about 13°C (55°F) – would make survival beyond a short period extremely challenging without protective gear.

A Brief Search

Tracking data indicates Norwegian Star slowed and briefly turned back along her course, consistent with a search-and-rescue operation.

In a statement, Norwegian Cruise Line confirmed the overboard involved a 79-year-old male guest.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm that one of our guests… was reported to have gone overboard while the ship was sailing to Greenland. The appropriate authorities have been contacted and an investigation is ongoing,” the cruise line said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the guest’s loved ones during this difficult time.”

Rescue boats were launched immediately but returned shortly afterwards, with the ship later resuming her journey.

The incident has not affected Norwegian Star’s itinerary, which includes Nuuk on 14th August before continuing to further calls in Greenland and Iceland.

This sailing has already included calls at Halifax, Sydney, and Corner Brook – the latter marking Norwegian Star’s first-ever visit to the port in her 24-year history.

The 91,740-gross-ton vessel accommodates 2,348 guests and is staffed by approximately 1,000 crew members.

Royal Caribbean Urgently Seeking New Star Godmother As Diana Ross Withdraws

Royal Caribbean announced in early June that legendary Motown singer Diana Ross would serve as godmother to its newest ship, Star of the Seas.

However, the cruise line has now confirmed that Ross has unexpectedly withdrawn from the honour.

Diana Ross Withdraws Star of the Seas

“We are disappointed that Diana Ross is unable to join us to be godmother of Star of the Seas,” a Royal Caribbean representative said.

The 81-year-old performer was due to preside over the ship’s naming ceremony on Wednesday 20th August in the AquaDome neighbourhood.

Ross had previously expressed her delight at taking on the role for the second Icon-class vessel, saying it felt like “a perfect continuation” of her career bringing people together.

No reason has been given for her cancellation.

Ross recently completed a UK arena tour and is due to begin her “Beautiful Love” US tour on 16 August in Saratoga, California.

Star of the Seas

While her second listed tour date is not until 28th August in St Louis, Missouri, scheduling conflicts, personal commitments, or health considerations may have prompted the decision.

With just a week to go until the christening, Royal Caribbean has yet to name a replacement. “We look forward to announcing our new godmother soon,” the cruise line said.

The role is often given to celebrities, public figures, or individuals recognised for charitable or professional achievements, although it is not limited to women.

Star of the Seas’ sister ship, Icon of the Seas, was named by footballer Lionel Messi, while a connection to animal welfare could be a fitting choice for Star of the Seas, which is home to Sailor, the fleet’s second Chief Dog Officer.

Troubled Times For New Ship

The news of Diana Ross’s withdrawal comes at a time when Star of the Seas is already facing some unwelcome publicity.

One of the ship’s headline attractions, the Frightening Bolt waterslide, has been closed indefinitely as a precaution following a serious incident on sister ship Icon of the Seas.

On 7th August 2025, an acrylic glass panel on the slide aboard Icon shattered while in use, leaving a gaping hole and sending water cascading onto the decks below.

A male passenger sustained cuts to his legs and hands during the ride and is now pursuing legal action against Royal Caribbean.

While the five other slides in Icon’s Category 6 Waterpark remain open, the cruise line has shut down the identical Frightening Bolt on Star of the Seas until the investigation is complete and repairs, if necessary, are carried out.

It is an unfortunate setback for the second Icon-class vessel, which is currently being previewed by media and travel professionals ahead of its christening ceremony on 20th August.

Cruise Passenger Misses Ship and Asks for Help Online; Cruise Community Doesn’t Hold Back

No one takes a cruise and purposely misses the ship, and yet it happens all too often.  As someone who likes to be back on the ship with plenty of time to spare, it’s hard for me to understand the mindset of a cruise guest who pushes the envelope and cuts it as close as possible.

A recent social media post highlighted just what regular cruisers think of the “no-shows”.  We all understand emergencies happen, and not being able to return back to the ship on time can happen to anyone.  But in most cases, it’s the obvious things that people fail to remember.

oasis of the Seas docked

A cruise passenger on a Royal Caribbean ship in Jamaica took to Facebook to ask for help.  The post stated, “Help!!! I just got internet access. I missed the ship. What should I do?”

Then a reddit cruise community picked up the post, and with over 185 comments to the post, they didn’t hold back on what they thought of the situation.

One user even said, “”The first thing I’d be doing would not be asking for help on Facebook, goodness.”

According to one comment on our Facebook page the passenger had “one too many” and ended up falling asleep on the beach.

Read more: How to never get left behind on a cruise

The “Tough Love” From Other Cruisers

After reading through the comments, it was fairly obvious that many had little sympathy for the situation.  Most offered a reality check to the stranded passenger who was left behind after sailing on Oasis of the Seas.

Their reactions highlighted the core rules of cruising.

  • The Planners: This group of cruisers expressed their disbelief that someone could miss the ship. As one Reddit user put it, “I still don’t understand how people can miss getting back on the boat. I mean I get how, just personally I could never. Too paranoid.“
  • The “Rules”: For others, the issue was a clear violation of a fundamental cruising rule. Another user offered a simple mantra: “Rule 1: Don’t miss the boat Rule 2: Don’t fall off the boat. It’s that simple.”

 The Voice of Experience

Seasoned cruisers chimed in with practical, and also blunt, advice based on their own experiences and knowledge of cruising.

  • The Logistics: Some commenters detailed the next steps for the passenger, focusing on the procedures the cruise line follows. They pointed out that the crew would likely remove some of the passenger’s belongings and passport, leaving them with the port agent. As one explained, “Their stuff was probably removed from the ship and their passport is with RCCLs agent there. They will need to fly to next port of call or home…. On their own dime.”  Others mentioned that only the passport and medications would be left with a port agent.
  • The Passport: The importance of having travel documents was mentioned over and over again. Commenters stressed the difficulty of international travel without a valid passport.  And this is another reason why in most international ports you should just take it with you.  One user mentioned a scene they witnessed in Bermuda: “They were very dismayed to see their luggage on the pier and they ran over to speak with our ship’s crew who just directed them to the port agent.“

The passenger is responsible for any and all costs to meet up at the next port or fly home, depending on the situation.  These last minute travel plans can be very expensive, which is another reason we recommend having cruise travel insurance.

“It Could Happen to Anyone”

While the majority of responses leaned towards holding the passenger accountable, a few comments offered a more understanding perspective.  They admitted that sometimes stuff just happens that you never could plan for in a million years.

One user recalled, “I almost missed the boat a couple months ago coming back from a beach excursion because there was a double homicide on the route that had traffic backed up for miles.”

Another agreed, saying, “On our way back to the cruise port there was a major accident that shut down the road in both directions. We barely made it back to the ship on time. Just saying that some might be late for things they can’t control.”

The Bottom Line

Being on time is a big deal when it comes to cruising.  You might be late for everything back home, but you don’t want to carry that same mindset into your next vacation at sea.

As one user aptly put it, “Jamaica is the last place I‘d want to be left.”

While unforeseen events can happen, the primary responsibility lies with the passenger to be back on board before the scheduled departure time. The cruise community, it seems, has little patience for those who miss the ship, especially when it’s completely preventable in most situations.

Tracking Feature Available To Parents On Newest Royal Caribbean Ship

Royal Caribbean has introduced a new “Find My Kid” feature aboard its newest mega-ship, Star of the Seas, giving parents real-time tracking of their children’s whereabouts via the Royal Caribbean app.

Star of the Seas Find My Kid app

Designed for young cruisers aged three to twelve, the service uses the colourful, waterproof Adventure Ocean WOW Band, which acts as a tracker that parents can monitor from their smartphones.

The feature is particularly appealing on the line’s largest vessels, like Star of the Seas and Icon of the Seas, which each carry up to 7,600 guests across 18 passenger decks packed with attractions.

Parents can enrol their children in the system once onboard by visiting the Adventure Ocean Kid’s Club on Deck 6.

WOW Bands cost $14.99 if purchased on the ship, but can be reused on future cruises without extra charge.

As well as location tracking, the bands can be set up to unlock stateroom doors, make pre-approved purchases, and display the child’s muster station in case of emergencies.

To use the tracker, parents connect to the ship’s WiFi, open the Royal Caribbean app, select the “Find My Kid” option, and view their child’s live location on the ship’s deck maps.

Star of the Seas Slides

While WOW Bands are already available on several Royal Caribbean ships, the live-tracking function is currently exclusive to Star of the Seas.

However, a similar system, “Kidfinder,” was tested on Icon of the Seas in summer 2024, suggesting a wider rollout could follow.

When Should Children Roam Cruise Ships Alone?

The launch of live location tracking technology comes alongside an ongoing debate about the right age for children to explore cruise ships without supervision.

Views among parents are sharply divided, with some happy to grant freedom from as young as eight or ten, while others insist on waiting until late teens or even adulthood.

Cruise lines themselves do not enforce a specific minimum age for solo roaming, but their kids’ club policies offer a guide.

On most family-friendly lines, children can sign themselves out from around age 12 or 13, although some allow it as early as seven with parental consent.

These age thresholds often reflect the transition from supervised activities to more independent teen lounges, which may be unstaffed but still monitored by cameras.

The colorful and inviting Adventure Ocean kids' area on Icon of the Seas, designed with boat-shaped bookshelves, bright geometric shapes, and playful seating on a wavy blue carpet, creating a fun learning and play environment for children.

Parental attitudes, however, vary widely. A significant minority (according to those I surveyed) would not allow even 17-year-olds to roam freely, citing concerns over safety and behaviour.

Others feel comfortable granting independence earlier, especially if their child is mature and familiar with the ship’s layout. Ships with built-in tracking systems, such as Princess Cruises’ Medallion or, now, Royal Caribbean’s WOW Bands, can make parents more confident in giving children space.

Some parents prefer to start small, allowing limited solo trips to fetch food or attend short activities before permitting full freedom.

Safety rules are also an important part of the conversation, from avoiding balconies and not trusting strangers to knowing muster stations and sticking with siblings. The ship’s onboard communication options can also influence decisions.

Ultimately, the right age is subjective, depending on a child’s maturity, the ship’s environment, and the family’s comfort level.

Tracking tools like “Find My Kid” are likely to sway the conversation, offering reassurance to cautious parents while enabling children to enjoy a taste of independence on the high seas.
